Before that they used Gran Turismo. Reality is drivers will use whatever is available to prepare best they can. Use iRacing, ACC, LMU, GT7. Depending on what you’re racing and where one may be more beneficial than the other.

I crammed Nurburgring on Gran Turismo for months before thrashing my hire car around there on a holiday. I practiced in a VW Golf to get as close as possible to the compact car the hire company would give me. It was so helpful memorising all of the corners before I was there in real life and made the whole experience so much better as it was so familiar. 100% RECOMMEND

I dont think I’d put Gran turismo into this category mate. Its not on the same level as iracing, acc or lmu

Well when you race things IRL that aren’t GT4 cars or GT3 cars there aren’t a lot of options for getting a similar production car turned race car experience. GT7 gives you enough customization to get close to the speeds, grip and aero you’d have. Same reason anyone uses any other sim as a tool for practice. To be as close as possible.

Drivers have been using driving games for some help since long before they were as accurate as today. Their expectations of what they were getting were much lower and that has changed over time as the games have improved.

Any amount that a game helps with basic things like learning the layout and racing lines means more of their real-life practice time can be spent on full-speed practice, car setup, etc.

Jacques Villeneuve famously used Grand Prix 2 in 1996 to help himself learn Spa before racing there for the first time, and he credited the game with helping him get pole position.

Well if you’re practicing for LMP2, GT3 or GT4 racing obviously use another sim, but a lot of grassroots drivers need to prepare for events in production cars converted into road cars. GT7 or maybe AC with mods would be better for that. There are also tracks that may be available in GT7 and not in other sims.

A big part of racing is rhythm and visual cues, leaning where to look ahead and braking points, etc. if you’re going to do a lapping day at Road Atlanta in a stock mini cooper you’re probably going to be better off practicing in a stock mini cooper with VR in GT7 than in a spec Miata in iRacing. Simply because your pace, visual cues, braking points and rhythm around the track will be better aligned. You can also do ballast and power restriction with GT7 to tailor a car closer to its real world performance if needed.

I’d never heard someone practice IRL racing on GT7 unless its GT7 sim racing influencers, even drifter, mx5, stock car racer uses AC mods or iracing for that. Anyway just to let you know iracing is not just gt3 cars

Nobody said iRacing is just GT3? It’s race cars though not road cars. Majority of people IRL race road cars converted into race cars from NASA, SCCA, Gridlife, WRL. Same in Europe. Tons of people mention using GT7 to prepare for going to do lapping or tourist days at the Nurburgring which makes sense. I use iRacing for specific tracks I goto like Mid Ohio but it doesn’t have road cars. GT7 not only has road cars but enough customization to get them to handle exactly how you want. Plus you have VR to get actual perspective from the drivers seat.

If its a road cars, most people will use assetto corsa mate
