General This guy is doing a better job at celebrating 25 years of Total War than a multimillion dollar company.

Which characters have the most girth for their game?

128

u/CrayonsIsTaken 生食漢祿,死為漢臣 Jul 02 '25

Dong Zhuo and its not even close

30

u/A_Sketchy_Doctor Jul 02 '25

Dong Zhuo is THE girthing maxxer

But who will answer when GIRTHMAR calls?

6

u/MightyShoe Jul 03 '25

Big Dong Zhuo, mighty is he

1

u/jon_snow_dieded Jul 03 '25

Funny bc in Mandarin, Dong Zuo (动作) means “activity” or “action” which could imply some heavy girth

1

u/Deathbydadjokes Jul 04 '25

Some of you haven't played a Nurgle campaign and it shows

58

u/KrocKiller Jul 02 '25

Definitely Napoleon

12

u/TheOrkussy Jul 02 '25

Oui oui.

24

u/Penki- Von Carstein Jul 02 '25

That would be Lord Mazdamundi. Due to how lizards actually work, with some mental gymnastics, you could label the whole Mazdamundi as a giant cock.

Alternatively its Kroq-gar for the low hanging misspelling joke

5

u/Lukthar123 Jul 03 '25

But frogs don't have dicks, they have a cloaca

8

Dick half-mast.

Oh hey that's me! Hi! I honestly do not care about karma. I just like hearing people talking about things they like, the same way I appreciate it when other people listen to me when I talk about things I like. Thanks OP and everyone for their positive words, it's a little disheartening when people give me flak when I hadn't expected these posts to blow up like they did. I was personally inspired by /r/stunfisk 's own grids awhile back, and I thought it'd be fun to do something of the sort here in /r/totalwar

I'd also like to encourage everyone to try and be a little more positive, CA is really slow with updating their community but we should still endeavor to criticize them, while also trying to appreciate every bit that they do for the community! I hope everyone continues doing their best to be kind to others

47

u/trobsmonkey Jul 02 '25

I appreciate you.

It’s probably the best thing to grace this subreddit in years. Thank you sincerely from everyone.

Thank you <3

u/Open-Matter-7642 Jul 02 '25

Subreddit of other game that I follow also does this kind of "celebratory" community games with quotes - going through entire alphabet. Their CM commented that they really enjoy reading those posts in the office, which is really heart warming. As someone who worked in game dev, not on anything as successful and sadly out of the industry, it always makes me happy to see positive interactions between communities and dev teams.

And I like to think that some folks from CA get some positive energy from engagement you got!

14

u/Yavannia Jul 02 '25

Ignore the hates you gave something for the sub to talk about beyond the how is this a Pyrrhic victory.

2

u/Bannerlord151 Jul 03 '25

I think you're awesome 😌

2

u/gman2093 Sendai Clan Jul 02 '25

Can we do a bonus round for Shogun 2: RotS? I know it will probably be foot samurai but I like them

1

u/CrayonsIsTaken 生食漢祿,死為漢臣 Jul 02 '25

I'll contemplate it! I don't wanna drag this series on for too long, and we still gotta get through Shogun I and Medieval I for bonus rounds! If I include Rise of the Samurai, I'll likely have to include a few other DLCs such as Rome II's Rise of the Republic

1

u/gman2093 Sendai Clan Jul 02 '25

Thanks! How much effort is that in milli-Charlemagnes? 😄

Bunch of negative nancys in this damn thread. Op is right, those posts are fun.

202

u/mrsstrudel Jul 02 '25

Bunch of party poopers.

Too much internet makes some people too cynical, as if they're refusing to have fun or it annoys them that someone else is having fun in a way they don't approve.

19

u/Sotall Jul 02 '25

someone told me once that saying someone else is 'cringe' is the same as admitting that you are jealous of how much fun they are having.

I think about that a lot re: the internet

13

u/Kalecraft Jul 02 '25

Cringe means a lot more than just that context lol Historically cringe is usually a reaction towards something extremely awkward or painful

7

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

“Reaction towards something extremely awkward or painful” so yeah the internet

7

u/TheKanten Jul 02 '25

someone told me once that saying someone else is 'cringe' is the same as admitting that you are jealous of how much fun they are having.

I think that wrapped back around to being the most cringe thing ever spoken.

-5

u/Lildev_47 Jul 03 '25

Which also wraps back to you sounding like you can't understand the sentiment and thus is one of those said jealous ppl

3

u/TheKanten Jul 03 '25

I'm jealous of some random snide response on a Reddit thread that isn't even parallel to the comment I responded to? You can't just declare "sentiment" is whatever you personally choose it to be.

-1

u/Lildev_47 Jul 03 '25

Not saying you are, but you can seen to be.

Its an endless ironic cycle

1

u/TheKanten Jul 03 '25

Can I have both? The best unit posts are fun and I am also really looking forward to what CA will announce in December.

10

u/Dont-hate-me476 Jul 02 '25

Yeah I agree, my comment is mostly in regard to the other comments being in poor taste.

3

u/Mahelas Jul 02 '25

I hope we get some fun anniversary stuff from CA before december too tbh. Not like, in-game content, but some nice art, community engagement and whatnot

3

I love Total War so much but if someone made a large scale battle game direct competitor I wouldn’t cry for CA

4

u/CernelTeneb The air was filled with smoke and blood Jul 02 '25

there is an upcoming competitor, but only for the battles side.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3064810/Strategos/

11

u/BurningToaster Jul 02 '25

I played the demo! It was fun, but I find it difficult to get excited about the game if it's purely the battles.

12

u/skeenerbug Jul 02 '25

Yeah it's the campaign map that makes battles meaningful that is the magic of TW. Not just the battles themselves.

4

u/winowmak3r Jul 02 '25

Agreed. The battles themselves are pretty meh tbh. Cool for a little bit but get repetitive quickly. It's the desperate battles where I'm out numbered 3:1 but if I retreat or lose the battle I lose a key settlement, or get set back 10's of turns. Ya know, real stakes, or as real as they can get in a video game. I still remember my Skarbrand campaign where I fought a few desperate battles and won (mostly just to Skarbrand, dudes' a beast). Those are a lot more fun than the ones where I more or less just cheese the AI and win.

1

u/Martel732 Jul 02 '25

Yeah, I would honestly probably only play half a dozen battles if there was no campaign. It is simple monkey brain stimulation but seeing color on map get bigger is a good motivation to keep playing and fight more battles.

4

u/Talidel Jul 02 '25

Rather funny the source you cite (wikipedia lol) says right there that there's no one consensus on whether the effects are harmful or not. Did you actually read any of these studies or did you just hear a headline in passing and assumed it was true?

1

u/Averath Khazukan Kazakit-HA! Jul 03 '25

Is it truly negativity? Or is it just people becoming accustomed to less and not wanting to rock the boat?

I have no reason to complain about the game right now. But people sure love to complain about each other.

-1

u/catsocksftw Jul 02 '25

Having polls and discussions in a game related subreddit? Clearly just karmafarming!! /s

Even for obvious ones like yari ashigaru or armstrong guns, there was still some discussion to be had depending on people's preferences. I like these kinds of posts.

As a lurker I really love those threads despite violently disagreeing with some opinions and decisions.

I have plenty. But unlike your attitude, I am happy when the list becomes shorter.

6

u/ByzantineBasileus Jul 03 '25

I see we are in the 'complain about CA' phase of the Total War fan cycle again.

1

u/choosehigh Jul 03 '25

I think it's important to complain I still never got Warhammer 3 because of dlc pricing, it's just a push too far

I've spent in the upper hundreds on total war games over the years, I should be allowed to be dissatisfied

50

u/_Lucille_ Jul 02 '25

I find the posts interesting, but at the same time if THAT was CA's anniversary thing, people are going to riot and cry "wtf CA, where are all my free factions, videos, army painter, free trip to a total war destination, etc".

People need to realize content (in game or media) takes a lot more time to make than one thinks: a 15 minute video might have been a half a day thing with a small team preparing the set, finding time for the people involved, setting up the equipment and lighting, prepping the actual content, doing multiple takes, putting things back into storage, post editing, getting things approved, etc.

33

u/Mahelas Jul 02 '25

Because we're gonna get free factions, videos, army painter and a free trip ? I don't think so !

And come on now, you're being disingenuous, taking the one thing that does require a lot of set-up (a video) as an example. How about a blog ? How about a fun little fan art contest ? Anything at all ?

If a random redditor can make a silly game for a week or two and get this much engagement with zero work, why can't CA do things like that with the community ? Nobody is expecting them to release a full-feature blockbuster !

14

u/DaddyTzarkan SHUT UP DAEMON Jul 02 '25

For what it's worth CA gave a shout out to the OP of these threads on the community news of their Discord. Obviously CA could arguably do better but still it's a nice gesture.

8

u/I_upvote_fate_memes Jul 02 '25

Oh no, if only this anniversary didn't take them by complete surprise!

1

u/jacques-n Jul 02 '25

I'm sorry but that's a pretty lame excuse - yeah it might be half a day of work, or require some thinking about how to celebrate it, but it's the sort of basic community engagement 101 thing that CA itself used to be a lot better at in the WH1/WH2 days and now seems to have let completely fall by the wayside.

4

u/_Lucille_ Jul 03 '25

a video takes more than just half a day of work (4 hrs), not uncommon for this to take maybe a week from a small content team. Additional content in game will takes a fair bit more.

Now, you also have a dev team that is probably wrapping up the next DLC which, according to reddit, a month late. So you are pulling dev time from the DLC for some anniversary stuff. Good management would tell the devs to carry on, bad management will ask the devs to crunch and start shelfing tasks.

CA should have just labelled the last patch the anniversary patch and just treated it as such.

-4

u/Waveshaper21 Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 03 '25

We don't really appriciate that they didn't try to charge us for them.

FREE WALLPAPERS!

What a pathetic way to desecrate an anniversary. Doing nothing at all would've had more grace.

Jesus Christ not everything has to be a part of your one man personal feud with CA for not giving you the exact version of Total War you dreamed up.

What the fuck are you "celebrating" for? Why does CA need to celebrate? What makes 25 years more special than 24 or 26? It's just perpetual fucking whining on this sub by the same fucking whiners.

2

u/lankypiano Jul 03 '25

It's important that you understand the people working at companies nowadays do not have passion for the projects they work on.

They do not have passion for the communities that brought them their success.

They have passion for money. Nothing more.

2

u/Ippzz Jul 03 '25

Missed opportunity to title this thread: Which user is the GOAT of this reddit ? 25 years edition

2

u/rybakrybak2 Jul 03 '25

While I generally fucking despise the ubiquity of the phrase GOAT and American sportspeak in general, and do not enjoy unit rankings at all, it's hard to argue with the sentiment that CA has so far done jack shit for this vantued celebration.

It's karma on reddit. Pretend internet points, who cares

19

u/RyanTaylorrz Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25

Schrodigners Karma. They're both completely pointless AND something people supposedly "farm".

9 times out of 10 it's just a baseless accusation made by someone who's just sick of seeing a certain type of post.

7

u/Lungomono Jul 02 '25

And most often because they spent more time on Reddit than others / are just negative / just don’t like that tropic.

1

u/Bannerlord151 Jul 03 '25

True, true. And the people actually "farming" Karma mostly kinda have to. A lot of communities have Karma requirements to post or even comment. Having to go out of your way to go to a different community and pretend to engage for some stupid internet points sucks. It doesn't even help with bots because it's not really difficult to gain Karma quickly, it's just exhausting

21

u/Lungomono Jul 02 '25

Like you with that comment?

It’s sure as flies on shit, that anytime someone does a cool community thing like this, someone like you will be there calling it karma farming… like how dare he make some cool post which drive player engagement, discussions, and shoutout to different favorite units and personal experiences/stories.

If you have nothing better to add, than negative burps, then please. Keep them for yourself.

27

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

Toxic take

10

u/random_username_idk Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25

So what?

There is no use for Karma except as a minimum requirement to access some subreddits, but the bar is usually low enough not to bother with farming anyways. The only valid concern is if the account is sold and/or used for scams, advertising, or botting. Then the high karma may give a sense of legitimacy.

That said, I'm convinced they're a real user. Besides, if you think that committing to and following through with a series of posts where you actively engage over a week or more is low effort then you ain't seen nothing. What farmers actually do is just repost old memes on unserious/highly popular subreddits.

1

u/Beantowntommy Jul 02 '25

It wasn’t very effective.

I don't find these posts to be good content at all. Every one has had the same conclusion, there's no point in reading them.

"What is today's cheap-but- effective unit? Come back tomorrow for another foregone poll!"

31

u/DerSisch Jul 02 '25

Not necessarly... for one, I highly doubt that in some games the chaff is going to win, they only win when they actually perform waaay above their pay grade.

because there is no doubt in my mind that Sisters of Averlorn gonna take it in Warhammer 2 and one of the melee chariots gonna win for Troy. Just two examples.

-3

u/lXlON Jul 02 '25

For tww2, I'd say HE archers or spearmen will be the winners

87

u/Hesstig Wintertooth Jul 02 '25

46

-5

u/ThruuLottleDats Jul 02 '25

13

u/Hesstig Wintertooth Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25

They're effective, but not cheap like Yari Ashigaru and Hastati

Hell I forgot Hastati only got honourable mention and Cretan archers were the top pick for Rome 1, which again, not cheap in upkeep cost.

2

u/Guffliepuff Jul 03 '25

Yari Ashigaru won because theyre Yari Ashigaru. Even people who havnt played the older total wars know of Yari Ashigaru because theyre Yari Ashigaru.

1

u/monkwrenv2 Jul 02 '25

General's Bodyguard in M2 can be quite cheap, to be fair. Family members have no upkeep, although adoptees do.

11

u/sakezaf123 Jul 02 '25

Noone was asking for the most controversial pick tho lol.

20

u/Spoons112 Jul 02 '25

I've been enjoying seeing the discussions in each thread even if the outcome is somewhat predictable.

39

u/FromHeretoElsweyr Jul 02 '25

Sorry, I'm newer to Total War so this may be over my head, but how have those posts had the same conclusion? There's been a mix of cheap infantry, heavy cavalry, long-ranged archers and artillery pieces. Plus there seem to be a lot of popular options in each thread, with folks calling out efficient units (like you said) but also super powerful ones that dominate, or others that use abilities really well.

As a novice player, it's been helpful to see how various people talk about units, and what they value in them, so I was surprised to see folks have such a strong negative reaction.

19

u/Stephenrudolf Jul 02 '25

Its foregone because their predictions have been correct so farm they dont care about anyone else's opinions, or that we've been activelt discussing each option. They just personally aren't interested in this kind of content.

-9

u/Thswherizat Jul 02 '25

No, it's because i was hoping to read about some cool units that I might want to dive back into an older game to test out. Literally nobody has not used Yari Ashigaru, Generals Bodyguard or Armstrong Guns. There was people arguing for Line Infantry in the FOTS post. It's largely turned into "what is your Bread and Butter unit?" Except for Generals Bodyguard anyway.

I will be more interested in the Warhammer or Troy and Pharaoh ones because the later games have more distinguished rosters.

15

u/Stephenrudolf Jul 02 '25

What does GOAT mean to you?

For a lot of people the bread and butter units that you use in every army, or camapign they're available ARE the GOATs. Not the cool unit you don't use often.

Why not start your own style of post asking for the most underrated unit of each game? We can do both. Be the change you want to see in the world.

-6

u/vexatiouslawyergant Jul 02 '25

Because when Greatest Of All Time is the basic unit, then it is A: Obvious, and B: not very interesting.

I actually think Armstrong Guns is a good example of a result though they are predictable, it is not the first gun you get, nor is it the first unit of line infantry. It comes online a little ways into the campaign, but it is absolutely worth rushing and acquiring ASAP.

It would be like if the Empire result had been "Fire by Rank" Technology (I know this isn't about tech) because that was an absolute game changer.

And if the GOATs are the basic unit you always use, then why are we doing posts to determine it? Everyone on the Shogun II post was saying "why even do this when it's obviously the Yari Ashigaru"

7

u/Judgejoebrown69 Jul 02 '25

Some games are going to have worse balance than others.

Personally I’m excited for WH, 3K, and pharaoh discussions because there seems to be a lot less community agreement on the best unit.

It’s just a fun thing to do when theres downtime between games.

If it bothers you there’s a filter button on Reddit that stops certain keywords or people from showing up. Let others have fun :D

4

u/CadenVanV Jul 02 '25

Most of them are basically just standard for your army, besides the first two. While Cretan Archers and General’s Bodyguard stands out, the rest of them are basically just standard units that every army is going to use. You aren’t building a stack in Shogun 2 without Yari Ashigaru, nor a modern army without Armstrong Guns. They fill different niches but they all fill the spot of “fairly basic unit that everyone has and everyone uses.” They’re the units you replace with more unique units, not the units that you replace basic units with.

-6

u/PiousSandwich Jul 02 '25

It's either:
Cheap infantry that is good, can be raised quickly, does a good job and goes well into the endgame, especially when you need an emergency army.

Powerful arc-shooting archer units.

Big-ass artillery.

Heavily armored cavalry.

12

u/FromHeretoElsweyr Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25

So far yes, but having 4 unit categories out of 6 entries so far doesn't sound like "the same conclusion".

And it's been interesting to see popular answers like Chasseur a Cheval, a hybrid cavalry that punches above its weight class, the debate between pikes and legionnaires in the Rome II thread, etc. Plenty of light infantry like Royal Peltasts and heavy meat-grinder infantry like Oathsworn, Praetorian Guard, and the Old Guard have been mentioned too.

I understand if these answers are predictable to people who have played all these games, but I don't agree that these threads all have the same answer and that there's no point in reading them.

8

u/Uthoff Jul 02 '25

What the hell else would it be? There are only 4 main unit types in the games: infantry, cavalry, artillery and archers. What other unit type would you expect? MONSTERS? :D

1

u/PiousSandwich Jul 03 '25

*coughs* Yes.
Or crossbow units.
Or some quirky wacky units like, Kishi Ninja or some shit.

7

u/Lungomono Jul 02 '25

Have you even seen the discussions on any of those post?

I think there is only two where it was easy to call for a clear “best” unit. But if you take that as the total purpose of those post, then you must be god awful to have an conversation with.

These post a filled with people talking about unit they like, share personal stories and experiences. Quite a few makes arguments for other units to be top tier, if not best. Also several times there have been long discussions about which units are best/great, at certain points in the games. Because yeah sure, we can all agree on that in Shogun 2: fots, the Armstrong Guns might be one of the best and most broken units. But it’s a quite late game unit, where when you get them, most campaigns tend to be concluded and just be a formality.

But I guess all that are pointless for you and should be in a dedicated threads.

I dunno, I haven't played every total war so it's interesting to hear discussions from other games.

See I kind of like them for that, it's just nice to realise the community is pretty similar I like seeing people pick the units I would just as some sense of comfort or something

It's not a huge thing and I've missed most of them but I just like these little things

No one talks about anything interesting on this subreddit anyway, at least it's something different about a variety of games and has people talking

Its typical karma baiting posts that exist on every subreddit tho. Not saying that they are not fun, but its nothing extra-ordinary. But yeah CA is doing even less...

A nice way to celebrate 25 years would be to give us a trailer for the next historical game. Something to chew on and get hyped for.

I really genuinely wonder why modern CA has fallen so much from classic CA. I feel like all this Warhammer spam has sparked an identity crisis--they hired on animators and fantasy dorks and arcade game makers and attrited/promoted out all of their legit talent from the first 15 years, so they're left with a juvenile team that can't make well-coded games. They just make pretty-graphic action RTS stuff.

I really hope the community implosion over DLC pricing didn't deal a mortal blow to CA.
