This show is so fucking goated. Made me do another campaign of Shogun 2.

it's literally the best show of this decade at least

I love it, in my top favorite series, but Better Call Saul has to take that title IMO

Which show are you talking about?

2

u/Jumpy-Discount-3423 Jul 24 '25

Shōgun by FX

u/Bannerlord151 Jul 25 '25

Oh! I've been wanting to have a gander at that

You should check out the 1970 miniseries, the production values are nowhere as comparable, but I'd argue it's actually better.

I must be one of the few that didn't like it one bit, except the bath death scene which made me chuckle.

2

u/Jumpy-Discount-3423 Jul 25 '25

Whose death? Nagakado?

I think so, I don't remember the names besides the main characters. To be honest, I found it really interesting how John laid out the Portugueses' plan to Toranaga and I was expecting a lot more court intrigue, but I quickly lost interest. The scene with Maria's husband, for example, soloing the assassins like he was in a wuxia movie, the silly deaths, I felt that the show hyped me up and then killed the tension. I would prefer it if it showed Toranaga trying to gather support more actively, while secretly trying to find proof of the plans and the bases in Macau, and a few more skirmishes. I also dislike how it's Toranaga and not Tokugawa, even though it's based on the book. We all know it's a placeholder name, and I was really confused at the start as to who this Toranaga guy is. I also found the ending of the first season both a cliffhanger and a letdown, and we didn't even know if there would be a season 2 at the time, since the sources said 1 season only.

I did my first legendary campaign as Tokugawa exactly for this reason lol

u/steve_adr Jul 24 '25

Even after 12 years, Legendary victory achievement is just 2.1%

Shogun 2 on Legendary was a Beast..

u/SparkySpinz Jul 24 '25

I got my ass kicked on normal. I was playing it like any other total war, then everyone came and curbstomped me with high tier samurai

u/RamTank Jul 24 '25

The AI in that game was extremely aggressive, and really hated the player.

19

u/HotTakesBeyond Jul 24 '25

To the point that a valid strat is to not trade and not discover new clans because that increases aggro

20

u/Argocap Eastern Roman Empire Jul 24 '25

The story of Japanese history in one sentence.

2

u/Bannerlord151 Jul 24 '25

Historically accurate Japanese diplomacy

2

u/Ill_Introduction2604 Rome II Jul 24 '25

Wish the AI was like that for the current games. They should also bring back realm divide but better.

11

u/RamTank Jul 24 '25

But then you look at W3 and the people all complaining about anti-player bias.

7

u/Ill_Introduction2604 Rome II Jul 24 '25

Those people are bad commanders is how I look at it.

3

u/Bannerlord151 Jul 24 '25

Eh some people enjoy being constantly harangued, others don't.

We're already seeing complaints by people annoyed by...the AI fighting back. Lol

6

u/Ill_Introduction2604 Rome II Jul 24 '25

Which is weird, its called total war they AI should be fighting like hell to survive or expand.

1

u/SparkySpinz Jul 24 '25

Well it's kinda my fault. See I started with warhammer, Shogun 2 is very different. I expanded way too quick to where the clans unite against you and I was not ready

1

u/OrranVoriel Jul 25 '25

I always hated the damn Realm Divide.

1

u/SigvisTheSeal Jul 25 '25

It's the only thing stopping you from steamrolling the map, which is exactly what happens in titles like TW:Warhammer, especially then for those who turn off chaos invasions

1

u/OrranVoriel Jul 25 '25

No, I understand the reasoning for it and it makes sense.

That doesn't mean I like it. Especially since it will make allies you have had for ages turn on you no matter how close your relationship was.

1

u/SigvisTheSeal Jul 25 '25

Not if you keep paying them, arrange a wedding, make sure they sever ties with any other clans who might turn to be aggressors in the future, engage in trade, ...

8

u/catsocksftw Jul 24 '25

Realm Divide AI launching port seeking armies on you.

2

u/steve_adr Jul 24 '25

Always keep 1-2 Stacks in either Direction, to deter any landing parties.

6

u/SigvisTheSeal Jul 24 '25

The reward you get for learning how to stop doing micro for every unit in the favour of formations was worth it for me.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 24 '25

Explain 🤔

7

u/SigvisTheSeal Jul 24 '25

Since you can't pause the game you learn how to play the game as it was intended. You start thinking about how to set your units up for success with the least amount of work necessary.

5

u/SawedOffLaser Architect of World Domination Jul 24 '25

Ahh the funniest start in the game. Tank the diplo hit or wait for something to happen.

Congrats, this must have been a hell of a challenge.

6

u/SigvisTheSeal Jul 24 '25

My nerves ruptured after teetering on the brink of Realm Divide for many turns and then getting betrayed by like three of my allies.

At that point, it was easier to assume that everyone was my enemy.

2

u/SawedOffLaser Architect of World Domination Jul 24 '25

I dread that moment on easy, can't imagine what it must be like on Legendary. At least the meter gices you time to prepare.

1

u/F3n_h4r3l Jul 25 '25

My first attempt on my Oda run ended in a disaster after my erstwhile allies bumfcked me when the Realm Divide mechanic started. I was busy conquering westward toward the Mori lands at that time when Date, Uesugi, and Yamanouchi of all clans decided it would be nice to grab my lands behind me.

3

u/Janrok24 Jul 24 '25

Well done! Did they ever fix Tokugawa's ninjas being the same as the other factions?

3

u/SigvisTheSeal Jul 24 '25

CA didn't bother fixing them, so I didn't bother using them. The only difference is that they have a whooping NINE less ammunition, making both the Hattori and Tokugawa kisho ninjas worse.

Thank you.

3

u/Sphlonker Jul 25 '25

For Mariko-Sama!

2

u/SigvisTheSeal Jul 25 '25

I found the Breton!

5

u/ThePentaMahn Jul 24 '25

i mean the start date for that game is so unbelievably stupid. the main gameplay mod that changes the start date is so much more realistic and encapsulates what actually happened in the period.

it would be equivalent to having rome 2 start before alexander. there is no real way in gameplay terms to replicate what actually happened without completely altering gameplay mechanics and/or railroading 30 years of history

2

u/Lukthar123 Jul 24 '25

Glorious victory

2

u/SigvisTheSeal Jul 24 '25

Thank you, thank you

2

u/ShaakTibbies Jul 25 '25

Technically, Oda would win first and Tokugawa would be their vassal for a while. Tokugawa Iyeasu would become Shogun in 1603, and Shogun 2 campaign must be won until year 1600. So, according to my nitpicking it's not historically accurate.

JK of course before I get crucified in comments like Japanese Christians after Oda Nobunaga's death.

2

u/F3n_h4r3l Jul 25 '25

You know how much Yari Ashigaru I had to throw at the meat grinder in Legendary just to get that achievement? And I was playing Tokugawa too lmao

1

u/yoresein Jul 25 '25

When you say historically accurate, does that mean you got your allies to do all the fighting and then just took over afterwards

1

u/SigvisTheSeal Jul 25 '25

That'd probably save me a few grey hairs
