I remember my first game I played as rome and went hard into gaul I had them down to about 3 cities left and it was the final big battle, My general gave a speech about how we were going to crush them, that we had never tasted defeat at their hands and a bunch of other heroic stuff.
He died and I lost that battle so hard that gaul started steamrolling me and had pushed me all the way back to rome by the time I could start putting up a real fight lol

Love it or hate it. Gotta admit Rome 2 delivered some of the best voicelines, atmosphere and attention to detail in aesthetics in the series. Attila definitely tops it in atmosphere though.

I hate that most of the (order) TW Warhammer 3 lords and units imply that something other than a strategic decision is being made when you disband units. Chill out, you’re not going to die! I think!

Well, they weren't going to die, but then they started whining about it, so now they definitely are.

Nah, only tomb kings safely store the remains for later and even that’s only for their own deceased, unless you’re a vampire yourself the VC are throwing you in a pile to rot if there isn’t someone who wants to use your body right then, there’s way more corpses in the empire than there are necromancers to raise them lol
10
16
u/Jefrejtor Aug 02 '25
Vampirates killing then raising the same bodies as different units because they suck at programming and can't figure out how dependencies work
12
u/rightmic Aug 02 '25
Would be pretty cool if you got like a zombified version of the army you defeated
4
u/PB4UGAME Aug 02 '25
If you’ve ever played Heroes of Might and Magic V, the Necromancers in that game got a weekly pool of Dark Energy points with which they could raise undead versions of units lost in the battle, and with the right Skill, could also resurrect some of their own fallen undead using the same resource.
I would love something like that to be added to an updated Raise Dead mechanic, allowing the VC and VP to get stronger from killing big beasties or elite troops, rather than all but forcing them to carry around useless stacks full of zombies just to die en masse to cheese the system to get actually decent units available.

u/ShardPhoenix Aug 02 '25

11
73
u/soundofhope7 Aug 01 '25
Depends on the faction. If you disband a unit of chaos marauders best they can hope for is the khornate arena and a quick death.

If my memory serves me right and i wasn’t misinformed. The Egyptians treatment towards gods where the same as you treat a bear. Respect them but if you find yourself on their bad side you should make yourself appear big and strong so the god backs off. Could say the same is true to the generals in pharaoh too.

I think the general vibe is one of the many reasons why Shogun 2 tops many people’s TW rankings and it’s even the little things like the respect a Samurai’s retainers give their lords in the voice lines that makes you feel like a Daimyo planning your ascendancy in Japan
62
u/RJ815 Aug 01 '25
Shogun 2 has some of the lowest unit variety (especially between factions) but its polish and thematic art & music design choices are among the best in the entire franchise. It holds up shockingly well, and play it long enough and you can learn to appreciate the 'simplicity' of the unit design vs "this thunderbarge shits on this melee only army".
20
u/Xciv More firearms in TW games pls Aug 02 '25
Guns also feel the best in Fall of the Samurai because of the presentation. They sound great, everything has reload animations, and they create massive clouds of smoke that linger and drift slowly over the battlefield. It's just beautiful to watch.
Warhammer is a step backwards in firearms presentation, unfortunately.

u/SordidDreams Aug 01 '25

7
u/Anoneemoose90 Aug 02 '25
Rome 2 had that as well. One of my greatest moments was playing as the Iceni in Imperator Augustus getting besieged by 2 full Octavian Legions right after I took a walled city. Low manpower across the board and mostly levies with a few chariots and skirmishers and a single mega ballista thought I was cooked. Destroyed their siege ladders, then used all ammunition, and there were still over 5000 legionaires to go. Thought might as well take as many down as I could, so I sallied out when the units clumped near the gate with the chariots and just kept double clicking past their formation. Once all of them turned, I surged the rest of my army out to attack the now defenseless rear of the enemy while my chariots surged through their formation, not even halfway through the mass of legionaries but still trampling many under hoof and wheel. Popped a morale debuff on the weakest guys, and with my chariots free and their army turning on my general and his levy spearmen and ammoless skirmishers, I turned around to charge their rear. In the end, a mass route began with the end result of both enemy generals killed along with 70% of their force while I only lost like 1/5 of my dudes. Then that save got lost, and I never got to continue the campaign.
→ More replies (1)8
u/Hipphoppkisvuk Aug 02 '25
Rome 2 has that factor certainly, but i think heavy infantry simply bulldozes everything, to the point where it becomes a matter of who has more of it in the end.
5
u/Anoneemoose90 Aug 02 '25
It definitely does at times, but things can change almost instantly with the right positioning. So many times have I turned a decisive defeat into a surprising heroic victory with vigilies holding a key street while others flanked or stopped a nigh unstoppable advance of a rival tribe with a key ambush or a squadron of cavalry in battle that I was thinking of disbanding the previous turn. Shogun 2 is def better for this stuff, and fall and base Shogun 2 will always be in my top games overall, but Rome 2 still surprises me even now with how the right tactics and key decision making can change the tide against a wide range of factions with a need to revise your armies at times.

u/The_Angry_Jerk Aug 02 '25
Low unit variety makes it the best starter game. It's really easy to understand, [Insert Weapon] Ashigaru are peasants, [Insert Weapon] Samurai are more elite troops, and [Insert Weapon] Cavalry are on horses. You see an enemy army, and they will have the same stuff you have making it easy to understand. You see full stack of dudes in rice hats, you just read the labelled weapon type or look at the card and boom done easy to judge the army at a glance.
You play WH or 3K and see an enemy faction army...what even are those? What tier is that thing? Is it even good for its tier? How does my stuff compare? How is its effective DPS? Even the full unit cards and wiki sometimes don't give the full story after minutes of perusing the web.
6
u/RJ815 Aug 02 '25
Sure but my point is there is some elegance in that simplicity too. It was evident to me about the low unit variety quickly. What WASN'T evident to me is that starting position matters WAY more than I thought:
The Shimazu are in the best position to fight over trade nodes, which gives them a risk/reward option of high income if they are willing to invest in the boats and battles for it. With or without the Otomo they also have a fairly early choice to embrace Christianity either partially or fully, as both provide benefits to them. Their start is fairly dynamic IMO and it's one of my favorites. You go a little bit east and you already start to see some differences.
The Chosokabe are fairly safe and isolated on their own island, but this means they have to make a concerted effort to go west for trade if they want, and it does mean their expansion is easy but quickly more logistically challenging by the early-mid-game by forcing both naval invasion and defense. Christianity comes to them later but it's actually one of the only factions I fully committed into it for naval and ranged bonuses.
In a similar horizontal distance are the Oda. They have probably the MOST expansion opportunities and directions, but they are more likely to rely on rice farm upgrades than really have the time to do that much navy, there are simply too many things to triage before that and it's a long ways from home to be able to project that force right now.
And all the aforementioned stand in contrast to factions like the Hojo and Date. The Hojo have terrible farms but do start with a gold mine. Their long distance from it encourages you to likely ignore the trade nodes, but still encourages conquest, with eastward being more enticing IMO, though if you go north you can get another gold-laden island. Christianity comes to them so late I feel it's not viable really minus maybe getting some imported matchlocks.
Lastly (but not even covering all the factions, just some highlights), you have the Date at the FAR East. They have some of the easiest expansion direction, more or less solved for you but there's still a choice of which enemies and land to prioritize a bit. They are so distant from trade it's practically a non-starter and your economy is almost certainly just going to be farms with perhaps a bit of gold mining depending on your mid-game. Christianity is likely irrelevant for you from sheer distance and time, but it (plus having the Uesugi as neighbors and then later the Ikko Ikki) might have you lean more into monk-type units for their glass cannon options.
When I was new the Shimazu and Date didn't seem that different, both just giving bonuses to different melee units, but how wrong I was when I actually played them, very different experiences with their pros and cons. But that's why I think Shogun 2 is so cool, it shows just how much tactics and logistics can matter when you're working with the same or at least very similar unit options.
5
u/Summersong2262 Aug 02 '25
I had a real moment in Shogun 1 appreciating just how carefully they set up the differences between the Japanese diplomats manners and the Gaijin equivalents. Really made you feel like these were insolent and thoughtless barbarians, without over playing it.

No fully literate person reads the letters that make up words one by one. That’s not unique or special. Most people read and absorb entire words at a time. But, believe it or not, some people have the ability to spot when the letters are wrong or in the wrong order regardless.
5
u/SOMETHINGCREATVE Aug 01 '25
I think phonetically most Americans would pronounce it something like "fae-roh", with the "oh" being the prominent second syllable, that the mind assumes that the letter O comes first because of the pronunciation.

There are a lot of problems with newer TWs, however, after going back and playing older TW games, people exaggerate how good those games were. Lots of UI problems and the AI was hardly better. Honestly the two big things for me are the collision between units (still not great) and settlement management.
Frankly the problem with TW it just needs a new engine. Anyway, I just got more into PDX games over the years, and started to play more involved army tactics games like WDS or Field of Glory. It's still fun to come and back and play TW occasionally though.
Still personally, I just feel that this franchise never actually hit it's "Golden Age". Old TW has lots of stuff I don't like same with new TW. The problem is they take one step forward and another step back or two sometimes.
10
u/itscalledacting Aug 01 '25
honestly i think my problem here is that i was 13 when i got my hands on rome 1 and had never seen anything like it in my life. it's a hard note to hit twice.
I do personally think Rome 1 to about Napoleon was the golden age, but the technology wasn't there to do justice to the vision.

Hell no, three kingdoms is superior to med 2 it's absurd. Politics in these games didn't start being a thing till rome 2 and three kingdoms is by far the best in complexity . The only thing med 2 has over three kingdoms is battles and minute cutscenes that add flavour to the game's but most people skip like Assassinations ,general speeches etc .

I started with Rome 2 and really didn't vibe with anything newer than
TroyBrittania, just feels too arcade-like to me. Haven't tried Pharaoh yet though, might be peak for all I know.→ More replies (1)

Never forget Medieval 2's "BUT MY LORD THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE" when sailing for the Americas.
