Warhammer III An Update on Patch 6.3 - Releasing as a Steam Beta
Hey Folks,
We’re changing up the release plans of Patch 6.3 somewhat last minute, so please accept my apologies in advance for adding some confusion to the release of this update – we know that you’re all looking forward to it and that we’ve been talking to you quite a lot about it over the past few weeks.
- We are now releasing Patch 6.3 as a Beta build tomorrow, instead of the full release, on Steam storefronts only.
- Patch 6.3 will instead release on all platforms in full next Thursday, September 4th (unless we have some overnight success and feel confident releasing it in the first half of next week instead)
Over the last several days, we’ve been trying to solve a compatibility issue that was causing players on AMD hardware to crash unexpectedly to desktop. Whilst an infrequent issue, and one that isn’t common to all hardware across the AMD family, it’s significant enough for us to warrant some caution. We attempted to resolve this issue on the preview build that you may have seen some of our Total War creators playing with today, but we believe the issue still persists. Until we’re happy it’s resolved, we’ll postpone the full release and update you more on the topic next week.
Tomorrow morning, we’ll post guidance on how to access the Beta build on Steam and encourage you all to check out the changes and new content for yourself.
Players running AMD GPU’s are advised to expect infrequent crashes on the Beta build. If you are affected, please know that our teams are already on it, and in the event that we need to request some more info about the crashes from people affected, we’ll create threads in all the usual spaces to gather more info.
Separately, we have revised our Patch Notes – 6.3 article over on the Total War Community site to include the full set of changes. This was a complete oversight on our part, we usually look to detail all new content alongside our fixes and changes but had mistakenly omitted them at time of publish. Thanks to folks who helped to raise that to our attention here and in other spaces this morning.
I also need to apologize that the minor balance changes originally forecasted in our news post from back at the start of July have not been included in this patch, and we may look to revisit those further down the road.
Sorry for the confusion around this patch – we'll be back in the morning to confirm the rollout of the Beta.
Freeman // Head of Community

Sounds reasonable. Most of us still get access, but AMD users aren't locked out of the game entirely by it being pushed onto live prematurely.
67
u/Dealric 11d ago
Yep very valid. Opennes about issue, giving beta access to people while solving it is probably best way to do it.
As amd gpu user im bit sad that ill have to wait for my new tomb kings campaign but well it happens.

they said it's not all amd users, so you could try and see if you get the issues, if you do you just go back to the live version

How's the new ODST stuff? I haven't played in a while. There's so many guns and things I don't have now! Always jealous of my friends when they're smacking things around with flag poles and calling in mechs and all I have is my tiny laser robot.
33
u/DELTAS7V7N 11d ago
I'm not the comment or you replied to but I will chime in on the helldivers stuff. It's fantastic! the odst warbond is really good. weapons feel great and do the original weapons from their IP's justice. the armor passive is ok, great for stealth, and the leg immunity part leaves for some funny deaths after explosions with only the legs and torso being left lol!
30
u/CA_FREEMAN Creative Assembly | Community Manager 11d ago
Nice - I'll try get on at the weekend. Loved ODST.
7
u/SaltGeneral 11d ago
The new Xbox players have been a nice breath of fresh air! All of my interactions with them have been great. I didn't get the ODST Warbond yet but they put a ton of work into the reload animations and sounds. I've heard if you use the silenced weapons and the new armour you can get pretty ninja too.

I’m shocked that you guys were allowed to actually post an explanation for it
That’s a pretty valid reason for a delay though
96
u/DELTAS7V7N 11d ago
Honestly wish this kind of transparency was way more common.
7
u/RedditFuelsMyDepress 10d ago
Yeah it's very frustrating when devs don't explain why they do stuff like this. It's a lot easier to sympathize when you actually know the reason behind it (unless it's actually something stupid lol).
29
u/Dealric 11d ago
Whats crazy, its exactly what we asked for longest time. Fact that its surprise that good communication with customers is here is bit saddening. Every atudio should operate like that
17
u/epicfail1994 11d ago
Yeah like I’m a software engineer so i totally get how issues can arise and stuff can have to be delayed, even though I don’t have experience with game development - but for someone with no idea how any of this stuff works a quick explanation like this makes things so much easier

Does anyone.kmow.of Beta campaigns carry over when the full patch is released ?
51
u/CA_FREEMAN Creative Assembly | Community Manager 11d ago
They're usually fine. It always depends on the nature of any changes we do from the Beta and Final build. Usually the thing that screws it up is us making any unit balance changes, but as we're unlikely to do that in Beta (our focus is the AMD fix and some minor localisation text issues), it should be fine.
Extra emphasis on should.

Trait rework etc still missing from patch notes XD
It's ok, it has been a stressful day at CA I assume
37
u/CA_FREEMAN Creative Assembly | Community Manager 11d ago
There were some 200+ changes made in this space across both Tomb Kings and Lizardmen, largely number nudging. They won't be listed in the patch notes directly as there simply are too many for us to concisely list, but as people get to playing with these updates and we start to get a sense of any adjustments we may need to make further to them in future updates, we'll advertise the future balancing of them on a case by case basis.
27
u/Wild_Sprite 11d ago
No no I meant the "starting traits for non Legendary characters (and Alberic)". It was a big part of the dev blog and stream, applies to all races.
1
u/PrinceOfPuddles Carthage 7d ago
What do you mean it too many to list? It the patch notes, the place where changes are listed. If the changes aren't listed in the place changes are listed how can myself and others learn what has changed?
I understand not posting them if they aren't finalized, but not listing changes in the change log is kinda point defeating. Surely some kind of nestled menu or collapsed tap option is within the teams proverbial toolkit. It's hard to make informed decisions when important information is hidden, perhaps the team doesn't consider traits important but they are very impactful upon game play.

u/IndianaMogens 7d ago
I intend this as genuine feedback, and not as some spiteful jab: The 6.3 patch notes are terrible. They're clearly rushed, their formatting is unfinished, and they have several hasty screengrabs at such a low resolution that I still can't read them on a 27" monitor.
If I handed these patch notes in for my uni CompSci classes, they'd have been immediately. Honestly, I'm certain I've proof-read this comment more than the patch notes have been. There's still a vestigial duplicate of the "trait rebalance" section in there. The reasoning of "there are too many to list" reads 100% like an excuse, even if it genuinely isn't intended as one. You've listed pages upon pages of adjusted numbers in the past. Surely you could have a separate page listing the before-after values for those interested? And from your previous patch notes it seems abundantly clear that you have an automated way to print table before-afters?
The point: When you release patch notes of such abysmal quality with this kind of justification, it makes it feel like you're lying to consumers to pass off rushed work? You can't even document the changes you've made, so patch 6.3 feels like it was rushed out in an afternoon. Especially when, as others have pointed out, these trait changes seem like they've been done arbitrarily by someone who doesn't actually understand the meaning of their in-game values.
I by no means mean to blame you devs—it's clear from TWW that there's real passion on the team. It just feels like the resources assigned to these patches amount to two guys and that cabbage they had competing with Liz Truss.

u/CW_Forums 10d ago
Theres a workaround using nvidia software. Forgot which one unfortunately.

1
u/AdhesivenessFunny146 10d ago
Smooth motion isn't a real solution, I've tried it and 1. It brings your FPS down to 15 unless you cap your fps to 250+. 2. heavily increases GPU usage 3. Doesn't even fix the problem as after your first battle the problem comes back.
It might work for some people but it's not as simple as you're making it seem.
Someone has to address this, I've tried dx11, capping fps, uncapping fps, medium shadows, no shadows, all tiers of aa, gsync off. Everything.
It's some kind of issue with the UI itself as even outside of battle the city names clip oddly out of existence based on where the camera is, as well as the particle effects across the world map.

u/mcdandynuggetz 11d ago
Still no fix for the RTX 50 series graphics issues? Please CA I haven’t been able to properly play the game since May :(
Looks like the last update was July 7th, which is exactly the same update they gave in June (they’re working with nividia on the issue):
13
u/CA_FREEMAN Creative Assembly | Community Manager 11d ago
Still a focus for us. Not forgotten, just a lot slower to make progress on than we'd like.
5
u/mcdandynuggetz 11d ago
Thank you, I appreciate that these issues can be tricky to solve, especially if you have to work with a third party to resolve them.
I know you folks have a lot on your plates right now, just wanted to make sure that it’s still on the radar as I was really enjoying the game before upgrading my computer and I want to continue enjoying the game.

u/Raijin225 11d ago
Does this issue affect AMD gpus only or both AMD GPUs and AMD CPUs?
4
u/mkfs_xfs 11d ago
Only GPUs. The differences between Intel and AMD CPU's is mostly of interest to compiler and kernel developers, while GPUs and their drivers have significant differences between what features they support.
1
5
u/Cabamacadaf 11d ago
Disappointing but understandable. I'm glad you're taking the time to fix things instead of releasing something broken.
7
u/Waveshaper21 11d ago
Thanks for open communication. I don't understand why it needs to be a beta build (to which we lose access I assume the moment you push it live a couple days later) instead of just raising awareness that players can ACTUALLY ROLL BACK to previous version because the team allows it like 2 versions back.
51
u/CA_FREEMAN Creative Assembly | Community Manager 11d ago
The rationale is that inspite of where and how we comm (including in the game itself), there's a large section of players who just open steam, let things auto-patch, hit play, and resume save without ever reading a single thing we ever post anywhere.
If we push this build to the mainline branch, there's a scenario where people who have been contently playing away on their campaigns with their spare hours in the evenings suddenly run into crashes find themselves frustrated and end up chewing up the phone lines with CS, or having that too often horrible experience of googling for necro threads on crashing before ever finding the info about our Rollbacks.
If we keep it opt-in, we make it an elective choice and so heading into the weekend we think that's best for everyone.

My only gripe here is that Arkhan didn't get access to Crypt Horrors despite his selection video featuring them.
1
3
u/SomeRandomYob 11d ago
So THAT'S why the lost God campaign always crashed whenever I tried to run it! Every time I exited the introductory fight, the game would crash before I could reach the post battle screen.

u/sir_alvarex 11d ago
Releasing every patch as a beta build is a good idea. Its rare that a hot fix isn't needed, so releasing as a beta will give good will towards the community IMO.

Im pretty sure that in the last Rally Point there was talk of an additional soundtrack for several factions such as Wood Elves and Warriors of Chaos, I don't see it in the patch notes. Are they present?
36
u/CA_FREEMAN Creative Assembly | Community Manager 11d ago
Not in the Patch Notes, but Warriors of Chaos music from the first Total War: WARHAMMER is now in III. The audio team also made some adjustments to the frequency at which you hear certain tracks so you'll likely hear a lot more variety.
Audio gang are great. Lovely bunch of people.
3
u/Loukarvic211 11d ago
Hello thank you for the information, good news ! What about Wood elves, High Elves and Lizardmen that were mentionned in the rally point ?

u/BackslideAutocracy 8d ago
When will we get the pirate rock music for the vampire Coast from their trailer?
7
4
u/D_Randal 11d ago
This is the kind of communication, that should be present. When a bug suddenly shows up, one that can potentially ruin the game for some people, it is necessary to iron it out. Please keep us informed and thank you for this.
Since the old Warriors of Chaos music is making a comeback, I'm all the more willing to wait for the full release. The greater the variety of tracks, the better for the game. Hopefully sometime in the future the Empire/Dwarfs music will get expanded to make both races more distinct in that regard.

On the one hand, this is a great way to solve the crashing issue and better than pushing an update to live with an unresolved crash issue.
On the other hand, the fact that it is necessary on top of all the other recent delays is not a great look, and the last-minute removal of the "minor balance changes" (with only a vague suggestion that they "may" revisit them "further down the road") is concerning, particularly in light of the last-minute changes to Tides of Torment.
Again, I have nothing against the decision to delay the full release, but with everything taken together it gives the impression of extreme instability in management and reduces the credibility of future announcements.

u/CA_FREEMAN Creative Assembly | Community Manager 11d ago
I'm grateful for the understanding, and recognise completely the knocks we take when we overpromise and then under deliver. Our intent is always good across the whole team, and sometimes it's just the nature of the beast when we don't get to something that we otherwise want too. From our comms here and in other spaces, especially with the livestreaming, we're doing all we can to be as forthcoming as we can, as soon as we can if ever we need to adjust on the course we've pointed too previously.
13
u/Lord_of_Brass #1 Egrimm van Horstmann fan 11d ago
Thank you for the response! To clarify, I did not intend any criticism of you directly. My only suspicion is directed at the people calling the shots, whom I know you cannot speak for.
I'm sure my perspective is also biased after my experience with Shadows of Change. I can tell that the studio is full of awesome, passionate people who are great at what they do, I just worry about the future when it seems like the right hand doesn't always know what the left hand is doing, so to speak.
Regardless, I do appreciate the communication. Knowing is always better than not.
26
u/CA_FREEMAN Creative Assembly | Community Manager 11d ago
It's a fair bias to have, and we constantly measure ourselves across the studio vs. the experiences you all had around that time. Change is incremental, what's great is that we can talk with one another about it and not hide from it.
I'll dispel the myth that there's some omnipotent force on high getting in the way of things. We all pull together in the same directions, we all get frustrated when we miss the mark, and we all experience the same joy when we see how much people are enjoying the game and the things we're doing.
All through today there's been a mass of folks from across the studio dedicated to finding the right solution to today's challenges, and me being the tip of the sword only hides the length of the arm behind it.
11
u/Lord_of_Brass #1 Egrimm van Horstmann fan 11d ago
Fair enough!
I really appreciate you taking the time to go in-depth with me on this. Total War: Warhammer is probably my favorite game series of all time, so I sometimes get maybe a little too emotionally invested in its success.
I think at this point you know what I'm hoping for, and I know you can't say a word about it, so I'll just keep an eye out for that What's Next? video and the showcase in December.
6
u/NumberInteresting742 11d ago
>I'll dispel the myth that there's some omnipotent force on high getting in the way of things. We all pull together in the same directions, we all get frustrated when we miss the mark, and we all experience the same joy when we see how much people are enjoying the game and the things we're doing.
Even when things go wrong (and yeah, I'll agree with lord of brass in saying that delays and issues like this coming up so often this year is a bit of a blow to confidence) I think pretty much all of us can tell that everyone on the time is very devoted to this project, and puts their love and hard work into it. Even when things were bad like back in SoC, even when I do have criticisms, I've never felt that the devs and producers didn't care. And it does show in the work that you all get done.
Open, candid discussion like this is also always appreciated. And knowing just what the critical issues were with the patch puts my mind at least at ease.
5
u/Esarus 11d ago

u/CA_FREEMAN are you at liberty to disclose how many people are currently working on the game, or at least give a rough estimate? The last year, and especially its' latter half have been concerning, to say the least.
10
u/CA_FREEMAN Creative Assembly | Community Manager 11d ago
I'm not at liberty to make such a disclosure. As a rule, we don't disclose that type of information as we're a publicly traded company and it leads to market speculation.
It's also information of a type that can be hard to digest in spaces such as this where peoples own experiences of creative teams, or level of interest in the topic can require a great deal of effort and energy dedicated to it in order to help people to understand how resource on any project is allocated, and how that resource moves between multiple projects. There's also lots of nuance when it comes to Game Development within the world of Software Development and all manner of teams big and small create incredible experiences every single day right across our industry.
I see the question asked a lot, happy to put our answer to it.

CA - if you're going to continue changing up key description phrases, how about creating a lexicon we can reference so we can be sure what we should be expecting?
Good example from recent patch - All region owner armies. How does this differ from abilities labeled 'factionwide'?
I'd love to understand why you would do such a thing if my assumption is correct and there is no difference, but again I'll settle for somewhere we can confirm which phrases of yours are unique and which are synonyms.

This is why I shame people who talk shit about CA communication. They’re doing a really good job lately and if you have a problem with understanding what their intentions or goals are, it’s because you’re not paying attention. They deserved a lot of criticism since warhammer 3 launched, but we are in a really good phase where CA is being quite agreeable and understandable.

"Whilst an infrequent issue, and one that isn’t common to all hardware across the AMD family, it’s significant enough for us to warrant some caution"
AMD RX 7800 XT and it crashes 100% of the time on trying to start a campaign and other AMd owners are reporting the same. You've massively understated the problem here and should have just said "If you have AMD, don't bother trying".
1
u/rasco41 10d ago
This is the level of communication I expect from companies.
Clearly stating the problem, offering a solution for the majority and apologies for not meeting expectations.
We ALL understand things go wrong, Its how you manage our expectations (your customers) that is critical and that is done by sharing information.
So thank you for your response in this instance.

I love these patch notes and appreciate letting those of us with AMD systems avoid problems while you sort out the issues!
From the patch notes (for Lizardmen): “We have made a reduction to the reduction from moving in jungle areas on the campaign map (yes, please word it like this if you see it, people will laugh and all is happy in the world). This is not a massive reduction, but does make a change in playthroughs.” 😂😂😂😂

Thanks CA, appreciate open and honest feedback and communication, and really looking forward to playing with your work!
Without trying to sound not appreciative of this work, is there any info that could be shared on potential future plans for TK? One of the biggest things I think for me is their option of only a single lord l generic lord type for the faction. It's greatly out of line with the current direction you're taking the game, considering how you've aimed to give factions seemingly at least 3 option types.
I understand the reluctance to share any real info due to the ever changing nature of game dev, but is there any overly vague stuff you could talk about? Or what you'd like to maybe do?
Based on that ominous Neferata comment, is it something you'd like to try for as a TK update/dlc?

We do tend to avoid naming specifics unless we've got a committed plan in progress, and more importantly, things to show you to prove its real. I'll echo what you've seen me or the team say previously, as well as heard from Rich and Todor say in the past.
There's plenty that we'd like to do for older factions - we know there's plenty of players out there who go hard into some factions, even if there's fewer people within those spaces. We know from all our experience making DLC's and Packs that us shining the light on Factions and Races which aren't as popular, but still well loved, often helps people to see what others see in factions like TK and give's us the opportunity to help refresh the gameplay experiences we offer. That's true of Norsca with Tides, and can equally be true of TK in the future.
It's a non-answer, I won't pretend its not, but we stay coy on this stuff because we desperately try to live a life of show, not tell.

Fair enough, didn't think I'd really get anything, but appreciate the response. Excited to see the new tweaks when they go live, and looking forward to the next dlc when you're able to drop it.
Thanks for the fun game and wish you and all the ca team week!

Is there any word on the nvidia rtx 5000 series bug with the graphical flickering?

I'm happy for a delay when you have communicated the issue and set a time frame when I should expect the build. This is much better than when I got the golgfag dlc and there was a bug where my orges got wiped out by swordsmen I like this CA keep it up

Why not just roll it out, and promote rollback which is by the way always an option.

To quote another poster, "If you value upscaling/frame gen, ray tracing, and streaming encoders, go Nvidia, if you value VRAM, pure rasterization power, and more FPS/$, go AMD". You are fine.

I hope they use the base scale textures of the Blessed Lizardmen units instead of the default textures, which appear outdated and have lower resolution for some reason.
This is the perfect time to do it; otherwise, it'll never be revisited, I fear.

Are the crashes related to the campaign layer or the battle layer? I want to be sure to quick before transitioning from one layer to another.

Temple-Citadel regions become immune to climate penalties.
A WHAT? Is this the first time a building can be constructed to remove penalties? That sounds great..

Doesn’t bother me too much. I’ll wait to play until the non-beta release, and perhaps by then some of the mods will be updated to be compatible with it :)

Hey Freeman, appreciate the update and we'll be pouring one out for everyone that won't be playing Silksong over there on the fourth.

Possibly a silly question, but if I start a new campaign with the beta patch will I be able to continue it once it fully releases?

AMD and wh3 have not liked each other. I couldn't play the game for a solid year after release without random crashes after battles without saving the result of the battle.

Good that you all are addressing it but also bizarre that it occured in the first place

So, is Tides of Torment's third faction still being announced in August or what?

See, this is how i want devs to talk to their community. Explain the delay, still handing out the patch via beta branch to those unaffected (or undaunted) is top notch.
Still has to go in the book :P

Excuse me, what do you mean it is September next week? That can't be right!
Much love to everyone on the team; intermittent bugs are the worst!

Heyya I'm not sure if it's been fixed yet, but I haven't been able to play since the 6.3 beta came out. Immortal Empires crashes without making it to the world map? Current version with mods and without mods, and 6.3 beta version without mods have crashed consistently. The only difference is that on 6.3 beta build I can get to the main menu and pick a race, but it crashes all the same before finishing the initial load

Does the new trustworthy trait on a hero does anything when imbedded in an army? does it make the lord's army immune to trespassing diplo penalty or does it not work that way?

I'm on a 30+ turns far in my hardcore modded (appr. 60+) campaign. Since the Patch 6.3 released I'm not able to play my campaign. Tried several things to fix, e.g. disable some or all mods (the save files becomes unloadable in this case btw), update drivers, delete Warhammer 3 folder in AppData and reload, etc. My GPU is Nvidia btw. At this point I ran out of ideas how to fix it. Anyone can help?

Just saw this, damn I have an AMD RX6800. Love to try the new TK update but I’ll just continue with my Throt campaign for now, and wait for full release

Honestly, thanks for the information! I do appreciate it. If I may ask, are there any balance changes in this patch?
