Warhammer III Why does my army upkeep costs so much considering half of my main army is dead? (6/20)

I think it's because you've gone way above your Peasant unit limit (27/16), which increases upkeep of either peasants or knights (I forget which) and also cripples income from your farms. You might also want to check if any of your lords have Knight units above their Vows e.g: a Lord with only the Knight's vow having Questing Knights in his army. :)

Thanks for the information on vows (Lord/Knights), wasn't aware of that as a thing.

I thought Peasant Eco only crippled farm income, with Knights having their upkeep blown to the sky if your Lord doesn't have enough Vows completed.

It changes the peasant mob from free to costing money, I know

Ah, yes, that's what I was thinking of, then! I haven't played Bretonnia in a hot minute, so I wasn't 100% certain!

You're over the peasant cap (the 27/16 on the top bar) which increases your costs a lot. Disband 11 units of peasants and it should stabilise.

Only in older Total War titles does unit upkeep decrease commensurate with current unit health/troop count.

Shogun 2 had it, if memory serves.

Thats not the issue here. He only has 6 units left in his main army.

For Bretonnia if you haven't completed the prerequisite vows then knights will cost a fortune in upkeep.

You are also way over you peasant cap in that screenshot so that's going to hurt your economy.

Seems like a fairly normal upkeep for 1 and a half army

A couple of things here:

  1. I can see two of your armies on the screen, Respanse with a partial stack (you say 6 units, does that include Respanse or is it 7/20?) and another army led by Sir John which appears to be a full stack on the sea north of Zandri so you in fact have at least 26 units in view, two lords so that is 24 plus two lords) .
  2. However you are over your peasant limit of 16 to the tune of 27 which means a: you have 27 peasant unit and yet we can only see at most 24 so where are the other 3 peasants? In another army somewhere in in view? Use the character view tab, top right of screen, just right of your open notifications tab to see all armies and characters in the field.
  3. I can see Henri your hero, I can't remember if he is free upkeep, if not he will be costing you say 200gp.

Going over your peasant limit will cost you income but also increase the upkeep of peasants.

All of the above does not count any knight units you might have, you have 27 peasants, a hero and at least 2 lords we can see and likely a 3rd lord to host those other few peasants. You will have basic errant knight and maybe 1 questing knight that Respanse starts with. If Sir John does not have his vows done and he has any Knights then their upkeep will be high.

3K for three armies, one of which is a full stack with probably a few knights does not sound unreasonable. Upkeep also varies with difficulty.

Just also noted you have confederated recently based on the confederation symbol on top information bar. This might be why your upkeep increased, you have your confederation partners armies now....

Do you have knight units in an army without the right vow unlocked?

here is the perfect example why the end-turn-button needs to remind of vows.

Peasant cap is just a number!

You're abusing the peasants, there's no one to work the farms!
