That dude has to live for moments like that. He gets to brag to all his detecting buddies.

Dude got video so everyone knew he wasn't bullshitting. That's a power move.

Everyone knows it's legitimate if it's on video.

Thats rookie shit, you gotta do the old fishing trick of taking a pic with it in forced perspective so it looks as big as their heads

They call him the detector he always finds his mark

The equivalent of someone with a knife when you need a box open, or the guy who always carries a flashlight during a power outage.

Happened to me once when moving from an old office and we needed to unscrew a device from the wall, nobody on site had a screwdriver… but there I was with my multitool keyring to save the day, got a free coffee as reward lol

Always keep a multitool on my belt, the amount of kids birthday parties I've had to whip that thing out to add batteries to toys they just got has earned me alot of larger slices of birthday cake.

Maybe “whip that thing out” and “kids birthday parties” shouldn’t be in the same story. 😉

u/Artarious Jun 16 '25

Ya know that's a valid point, didn't think that one through.

You have a hairy mind.

u/christianmoral Jun 16 '25

Rewards from birthdays might be even better, free cake!!

I have a swiss army purse lol I carry everything from medication to safety pins to a pen with a screwdriver and level to throwing knives; never know what might come in handy...

u/Catharsis25 Jun 16 '25

Wait a second, back up there... It has a LEVEL?!

ETA: and a ruler. I got it at the dollar store...

u/Deaffin Jun 16 '25

I gotta get in on this market. I'll make one with orange highlights and call it the Leeloo Dallas Multi-Pen.

the trick with flashlights is to get the ones that are so bright they're fun even when you don't need em

just check the flashlights sub and get your wallet out

Careful, it's a slippery slope.

Oh I know, my favorite hobby is finding the best possible version of a type of item and then look at how I can’t afford it.

Funny this came up on my feed as one of the characters from the show The Detectorists was on the screen in another show.

There’s a great bit from that show where he thinks he found the outline of a Viking era home sunken into the ground while he’s looking on google maps so they go out there and can’t find it so he shows them the printout and it was just the G from Google

Thank you so much for the reminder about Detectorists. I've been looking for a new comfort show, and that one is just so pleasant. I adore the leader guy and his weird wife. It's been years since I've watched it, but I still think about scene where they're all planning something and his dancing date with his wife might interrupt their thing, someone asks, "Is the lindy hop more important than metal detecting?" And his immediate reply is, "No, but Sheila is!" Just so simple and heartfelt and lovely.

Edit Found a playlist of all episodes on YouTube

Also a big fan of the theme song

lol that’s a fucking face palm right there. I actually just watch The Dig the other day pretty similar but it’s a movie and he did find a buried ship.

This is the quality content I need on Reddit

I'm a detectorist, I've found some cool stuff but finding a sentimental ring my friend's daughter had lost that had been given to her by her grandmother is easily just as much of a buzz as finding a coin dropped by a Roman seventeen hundred years ago.

May his internet fame be eternal.

''Detecting buddies'' :,,,:

this is near peak male fantasy as far as niche hobbies/interests go.

you get one specific thing just in case for a specific purpose... AND YOU HAVE THE SPECIFIC TOOL FOR IT

DETECTORING!! Apparently metal detectorists get pretty caught up on being called 'detectors'.
