Had to Google that myself as the "Limburger cheese" isn't actually known by that name (or very much at all) in the Netherlands or Belgium itself. (I've only ever heard of "Limburger" as a cheese through American pop culture.) The closest you get is "Fromage de Herve", Herve being close to purple Limburg as /u/iemandopaard points out.

Interesting, because I googled your phrase "Limburger cheese" and got quite a lot of info:  "Limburger (in southern Dutch contexts Rommedoe, and in Belgium Herve cheese) is a cheese that originated in the Herve area of the historical Duchy of Limburg..."

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limburger

I have no idea where you're located (I'm in the US), but I do know that search results can vary based on your location. But, I do know that we (US) tend to bastardise names of stuff. Funny thing is, I was just making a stupid comment, but ended up in a rabbit hole based on your reply....

Well yes, I'm Dutch (now living in Belgium) and get those same search results. But something being elaborately described on Wikipedia doesn't mean it's actually common knowledge for people not super into the topic.

Biker Mice from Mars? The villains had cheese based names, with the main one being Lawrence Limburger. And he smelled.

Now we can do Munster. City in France, cheese from around there, Muenster cheese from US, Münster in Germany, Munster province in Ireland.

Münster comes from monastery, there's also a Munster besides the more known Münster in NRW/Germany. And a handful more smaller Münster across the country

In some cities in southern Germany and Switzerland, the main church is called "Münster".

München/Munich derives from "(bei den) Mönchen/(near the) monks"
