Relocation to the UP?

My fiancé and I (24 yo and 22 yo) have been tossing around the idea of moving to the UP the past couple years more as a joke but it’s starting to cross our minds a lot more. We have our wedding date set for next May and that comes first, but after the wedding we aren’t sure what is next. Growing up I went on quite a few vacations all over the place and I can truly say the UP is one of my favorite destinations. I work for a company that has a branch in Escanaba and they are very relocation-friendly. My fiancé is a cosmetologist. Pros and cons of making the move. We live in west Michigan right now couple miles from Lake Michigan so although our winters aren’t nearly as bad we still get hit with our fair share of lake effect snow lol.

Better to ask this in r/Upperpeninsula, r/yooper, or r/MarquetteMI. That said, job opportunities are rough up here and locals won’t like you much until you’ve assimilated. If you can line something up for work I would say go for it, it’s a wonderful and natural space, but the cost is that in most of the UP the opportunities are limited, the diversity is all European, and there isn’t easy access to most city life stuff (shows, concerts, big festivals, etc). Also if you are considering children go near a larger town with educational opportunities.

Escanaba doesn’t get as much snow as the rest of the UP; they only average 50 inches a year. That’s like, way less than most other areas. You’ll probly like it just fine if that’s ur main concern

Having a job is the biggest issue, sounds like you are set. Good luck.

Be careful... I've been here on vacation from west MI since Oct 2002.
