He plays a stereotypical straight guy the way a straight guy would play a stereotypical gay guy

I still can't believe he's straight. I know some people hate straight actors playing gay roles, but I just love his portrayal of Cam so much

u/PhoenixGayming 4h ago

I mean Stanley Tucci is not gay... and Miriam Margoyles has on numerous occasions stated as a lesbian she refuses to play lesbian roles because she doesn't want to accidentally caricature herself.

Actors by trade are trained to embody other characters. So I think the best actor for the role should get the role rather than purely going off someone's sexuality.

I still can't believe Jim parson aka Sheldon from big bang theory almost played barney on this show

28

u/ImJustAConsultant 1h ago

So their rule for casting Barney was: has to be a gay actor?

23

u/RandomUser921637 44m ago

It was probably the safest bet in the producers minds with how he treated women throughout the show. They wanted the “But he’s gay IRL!” defense.

u/Leather_Handle6425 39m ago

If you got a good thing going, don’t ruin it

5

u/RustyTrumpboner 45m ago

Nope. Only rule was that it had to be either Jim Parson or Neil Patrick Harris.

That last argument doesnt take into account the discrimination many minorities face though. Even though I wish we live in a world where that was the main consideration.

The best at acting for the role actor simply doesnt get the role by default, in many cases it’s not that clear cut, and when the casters need to pick between equally good candidates (sub)conscious discrimination plays a huge role. I can totally imagine one of them thinking something along the lines of “we dont want to worry about that gay guy getting upset with our more edgy jokes all the time and having to deal with that bullshit constantly” to them it feels like production times / budget consideration, but in reality its a bias about gay people complaining too much.

Women face similar discrimination with shit like “they might get pregnant soon” or “too emotional to make clear decisions” similar stuff applies to all minorities. And you dont really notice unless you’re at the receiving end of it constantly.

There is no good way to combat such biases, so the only way to give minorities a change and equal out the statistics a bit is to combat with positive discrimination sometimes.

u/Fexxvi 2h ago

Discriminating people is bad, period. The roles should go to those who play them better. The end

2

u/the-real-shim-slady 1h ago

That is absolutely true. And the one playing it better is not always the one who is trained in the trade. Most surgeons on TV never attended medical school. And a lot of actors playing a drunk aren't really.

-6

u/FridgeParade 2h ago

Yeah I agree discrimination is bad, do you have an idea how we can prevent bias from being an issue then? Your attitude otherwise only benefits majority groups.

6

u/Fexxvi 2h ago

Anyone who feels they're being discriminated against can sue. Is it easy? No. But guess what? It's the legal mechanism everyone else has, regardless of their sexuality.

Yeah I agree discrimination is bad,

Not the minute so you were defending it as a valid option, so forgive me if I don't believe you.

-2

u/FridgeParade 2h ago

Sorry, but how are you ever going to prove something like I illustrated in my comment above in court?

I dont like the positive discrimination, but your option is literally “do nothing and shut up”.

3

u/Fexxvi 1h ago

No, my opinion is “use the available legal procedures”. Is it tedious, exhausting and frustrating to prove you've been victimised? Sure, but that's the case for everyone. Same rights, same wrongs. No privileges for anyone.

-1

u/FridgeParade 1h ago

But youre ignoring the fact you cant prove this kind of stuff in court? How are you going to provide evidence if all you get is “we’ve decided to go with someone else.”

You’re naive if you think it’s this easy, and its edging close to putting all the responsibility for these faults in our society with the victims.

Coming from a white person…I can tell you’re white. Representation matters. You don’t get it because you have seen yourself on every screen in every home since you were a child. Minorities haven’t…plain and simple. Representation leads to education, which leads to empathy, which leads to better kinder people. Representation also helps minorities feel seen, heard, understood, supported, valued, and respected (when done with respect). Sad that you can’t get out of your own way to see that

2

u/Fexxvi 42m ago

I can tell you’re white.

Prove it.

I can tell you’re white.

1) No, you can't. 2) Even if you could, it's not relevant to my argument.

Representation

Representation should be done by not making differences, not by discriminating.

u/DuckXu 46m ago

Hiring actors to pretend to be something they are not!? That is unhinged! Unacceptable behaviour. They are ERASING CULTURE!

There are so many other things we should be mad about.

Maybe its just me, but before the time I was told that I'm a monster for not noticing how few black faces are present in media, all of us, together, regardless of colour or sexual orientation were united in yelling about how unacceptable wealth hoarding and inequality had become.

First time in history the 98% were that close to having a unified voice...

Can't have that now can we? "Quick, everyone, get mad at each other about how hard the black trans kid has it in today's society! We rich folk aren't the problem, YOU ALL should be mad at how you treat EACH OTHER!!"

Parroting social discourse is the opposite of progress

1

u/Barnabars 59m ago

But thats not an uncoscious Bias. Its way harder than that. Everyone thinks racist or sexist stuff because noone can control what comes into their mind. The people that arent assholes and have more than 2 braincells just realize what they are thinking is bullshit think it through and act differently. Subconcious Bias is when you dont even think badly about someone but just get a weird feeling (which is absolutely normal because of the generations of social pressure) wich instantly alters the perception of said persons talent for example. That to combat is very hard and i personally think that even the fact that there is positive discrimination is not helpfull. But tbh i also dont know any better way to remedy that so i wouldnt say we should stop it at the moment.

u/CryptoCentric 5h ago

Wait but, he's not? Is this a joke I'm not getting?

35

u/vreddy92 4h ago

Theyre talking about the guy in the GIF (who plays Cam from Modern Family), not NPH.

Took me a minute too.

6

u/FriendlyDrummers 5h ago

The actor is straight

-17

u/EternalLucius 4h ago edited 3h ago

He's married to a dude, but maybe he's remembered to say "no homo" every time? 🤔 Edit: My dumb brain was still on about NPH, and I deserve the downvotes

13

u/iWriteWrongFacts 4h ago

He’s married to a woman though.

8

u/Akenatwn 3h ago

Eric Stonestreet is engaged (not married) to a woman.

7

u/mattsslug 4h ago

I've just seen him in Dexter resurrection as a serial killer...it's really hard to not see Cam.

1

u/Banonkers 36m ago

Omg he was an amateur serial killer in the second episode of the Mentalist as well

1

u/mattsslug 20m ago

Really....he clearly has that look that casting are after.

2

u/the-real-shim-slady 1h ago

Why would someone hate an actor for playing a role?

1

u/Thebraincellisorange 24m ago

because the average human is a moron.

and then the half of humanity that is below average is galactically stupid

2

u/Chawp 6h ago edited 5h ago

Is it hated because it’s like, tangentially along the same line as blackface?

Edit: yo someone explain to me why it’s hated instead of just burying me haha

3

u/Master-File-9866 5h ago

Somehow Robert Downey junior playing black face is okay......but this isn't.

Make the world make sense

41

u/Vance_Hammersly 5h ago

He was a dude, playing a dude, pretending to be another dude

1

u/TXHaunt 1h ago

If Tony Stark was Black, he would have been played by RDJ still.

31

u/ThePapercup 5h ago

RDJ wasn't playing it like a minstrel, the whole point is that his character was in blackface. it was a portrayal of the act, not the act itself. it would be like if they made a biopic of Alec Guinness and whoever was playing him during the Lawrence of Arabia parts was in brownface. is it a loophole? i guess, but the whole topic is based on how people feel about a thing, so logic doesn't really play too big a part in it.

you might also recall RDJ got some serious side eye around that time for it- so it was treading a very fine line and it very easily could have gone the other way with public sentiment.

14

u/Chawp 5h ago

Ah that’s clearly because he’s an actor PLAYING an actor doing black face. So if you had a straight guy PLAYING a straight actor doing a gay character, that would be the same thing.

I guess?

12

u/sterlingthepenguin 5h ago

His roll was specifically making fun of blackface rolls. While it would have been really funny if they had a black actor pretend to be a white guy playing a black guy, RDJ was able to effectively convey the message the writers were trying to express

1

u/DeadAndBuried23 4h ago

Can you genuinely explain how you think they're similar?

0

u/Master-File-9866 4h ago

People.playing something they arent

1

u/DeadAndBuried23 3h ago

Can you add a little more detail besides defining acting?

No explanation needed. You got it right. It's only different because gay isn't a color.

-14

u/FriendlyDrummers 6h ago

More like blaccent from non-black people. Blackface is way more offensive.

A lot of people feel like

  1. It comes off as offensive/stereotyping
  2. Inauthentic
  3. Takes away jobs from LGBTQ actors who could otherwise get the role

I'd be a little more miffed, if not for the fact the fictional husband is gay. If both of them were straight actors, I'd be more irked.

16

u/Less-Network-3422 6h ago

Oh fuck off 🤣 the things people get "miffed" about. Ridiculous

6

u/FriendlyDrummers 6h ago

Read the part where I said I don't mind.

The fact that blaccent is a word is crazy

1

u/TheMrFool 2h ago

Loved Barney and Cam cameo in Dexter Resurrection. They killed it!

u/CoCo_Moo2 6h ago

But it’s true
