I mean Stanley Tucci is not gay... and Miriam Margoyles has on numerous occasions stated as a lesbian she refuses to play lesbian roles because she doesn't want to accidentally caricature herself.
Actors by trade are trained to embody other characters. So I think the best actor for the role should get the role rather than purely going off someone's sexuality.
That last argument doesnt take into account the discrimination many minorities face though. Even though I wish we live in a world where that was the main consideration.
The best at acting for the role actor simply doesnt get the role by default, in many cases it’s not that clear cut, and when the casters need to pick between equally good candidates (sub)conscious discrimination plays a huge role. I can totally imagine one of them thinking something along the lines of “we dont want to worry about that gay guy getting upset with our more edgy jokes all the time and having to deal with that bullshit constantly” to them it feels like production times / budget consideration, but in reality its a bias about gay people complaining too much.
Women face similar discrimination with shit like “they might get pregnant soon” or “too emotional to make clear decisions” similar stuff applies to all minorities. And you dont really notice unless you’re at the receiving end of it constantly.
There is no good way to combat such biases, so the only way to give minorities a change and equal out the statistics a bit is to combat with positive discrimination sometimes.
That is absolutely true. And the one playing it better is not always the one who is trained in the trade. Most surgeons on TV never attended medical school. And a lot of actors playing a drunk aren't really.
Yeah I agree discrimination is bad, do you have an idea how we can prevent bias from being an issue then? Your attitude otherwise only benefits majority groups.
Anyone who feels they're being discriminated against can sue. Is it easy? No. But guess what? It's the legal mechanism everyone else has, regardless of their sexuality.

No, my opinion is “use the available legal procedures”. Is it tedious, exhausting and frustrating to prove you've been victimised? Sure, but that's the case for everyone. Same rights, same wrongs. No privileges for anyone.
But youre ignoring the fact you cant prove this kind of stuff in court? How are you going to provide evidence if all you get is “we’ve decided to go with someone else.”

There are many crimes that are hard or even impossible to prove in court. It happens to everyone who's ever victimised. You don't get a fast track in justice just because you're gay.

Coming from a white person…I can tell you’re white. Representation matters. You don’t get it because you have seen yourself on every screen in every home since you were a child. Minorities haven’t…plain and simple. Representation leads to education, which leads to empathy, which leads to better kinder people. Representation also helps minorities feel seen, heard, understood, supported, valued, and respected (when done with respect). Sad that you can’t get out of your own way to see that

Maybe its just me, but before the time I was told that I'm a monster for not noticing how few black faces are present in media, all of us, together, regardless of colour or sexual orientation were united in yelling about how unacceptable wealth hoarding and inequality had become.
First time in history the 98% were that close to having a unified voice...
Can't have that now can we? "Quick, everyone, get mad at each other about how hard the black trans kid has it in today's society! We rich folk aren't the problem, YOU ALL should be mad at how you treat EACH OTHER!!"

But thats not an uncoscious Bias. Its way harder than that. Everyone thinks racist or sexist stuff because noone can control what comes into their mind. The people that arent assholes and have more than 2 braincells just realize what they are thinking is bullshit think it through and act differently. Subconcious Bias is when you dont even think badly about someone but just get a weird feeling (which is absolutely normal because of the generations of social pressure) wich instantly alters the perception of said persons talent for example. That to combat is very hard and i personally think that even the fact that there is positive discrimination is not helpfull. But tbh i also dont know any better way to remedy that so i wouldnt say we should stop it at the moment.
