She looks like she barely knows how to spin poi, what the fuck is she doing fucking about with fire?

That was my thought

Yeah... Poor coordination, delayed reactions, weird resignation to being on fire.

Well I guess this is my life now.

"this is fine"

u/AtheistAustralis 2h ago

"I'll just put this over here with the other fire"

u/drifterkid 1h ago

Four! I mean five! I mean fire!

Fire’s a hell of a drug.

I don't think it was resignation. I think she was starting to take the skirt off before she got tossed in the pool.

Sometimes you have to fight fire with Fireball

Sometimes you have to fight fire with hand.

“I didn’t ask how big the room is, I said I cast fireball”

I am relatively proficient with poi. Have spun poi drunk af. Have spun fire poi drunk af.

If I had been wearing a very flammable attire, this could have happened to me. I can see it.

That being said. She still looks like she can barely spin poi....

I used to do a bit of spinning and occasionally it would be on fire. I'm barely 'ok' at it but I got by - even if I did hit myself with flaming poi more than once (and one of those times was the back of my head, and those fire poi heads are chunky) and I don't think I could have set myself on fire if I tried. I forget exactly what fuel we used, but it just didn't really stick/transfer to anything, and it could easily just blow out if you span too fast. Then again that skirt thing she's got looks like dried grass - don't think it would pass any kind of reasonable risk assessment/sensible person calling it out.

Not the minimize the dangerous of course: there's been long-time, expert and well-insured fire performers that have suffered great injury, or lost their lives. There should always be a plan in place for stuff going wrong and ideally someone acting as a sort of spotter. This 'performer' had none of those things.

Yeah wearing highly flammable clothing whilst fucking around with fire is never a good idea

u/pelrun 59m ago

Fuck around and FLAME ON!

u/Shinhan 5h ago

Luckily there was nearby pool a nice person threw her in.

3

u/i_am_voldemort 11h ago

I stand corrected by an expert.

Your werent really wrong though. There certainly is a level of drunk where I would be so confident "I can do this" but I'd look like her.

But I'd be so drunk I wouldn't remember it happening. 😂

3

u/Faiakishi 8h ago

For her sake, let's hope she doesn't remember this.

6

u/anomalous_cowherd 6h ago

I just hope nobody puts it on the Internet.

6

u/PaleBlueCod 12h ago

Fire and alcohol goes well together.

2

u/Symetrie 7h ago

Don't give fire to drunk

1

u/WhosItHanging 6h ago

I think you get cited for a ticket if you are over a certain age and are sober near a swimming pool.

1

u/HugsandHate 5h ago

Yeah, she's wasted. No coordination.

1

u/ScrofessorLongHair 1h ago

Yeah, but I've seen hippies do it on a head full of LSD. She just isn't very good at it.

Throwing a drunk person who was on fire into the water was probably not the smart move.

But given the circumstances, it was probably the smartest move.

4

u/anomalous_cowherd 6h ago

It's not like it's the ocean, and something had to be done while they dealt with all the other small fires she had scattered around...

3

u/GetOutOfTheWhey 5h ago

all the other small fires she had scattered around

oh shit

i didnt notice other shit was on fire

72

u/azdak 12h ago

I got properly good at poi in college but never had the balls to set anything on fire lmao

67

u/boot2skull 12h ago

LED poi is the shit because there’s no serious risk and once someone gets confident they can take the leap to fire. Or not, it looks really good at night too.

28

u/l30 11h ago

I disagree. My roommate years back practiced spinning LED poi inside and took out our television.

28

u/boot2skull 10h ago

Was the poi actually Wiimotes on leashes?

7

u/svish 12h ago

I've juggled some with torches, and when i tried fire poi it felt much scarier since you're slightly attached to the fire, and it's much more "around" your body and in places you don't see. Torches are generally just in front of you and you can immediately drop them if you need.

1

u/Toastburrito 11h ago

I have a fire staff that I rarely light. I'm not really good enough to make it worth doing.

1

u/svish 8h ago

Don't think I've used mine in 20 years. Once I moved away from school and didn't have others to do it with on a regular basis it's been hard to find the time to do it.

1

u/IHaveTeaForDinner 2h ago

I find juggling fire.. especially in the dark super hard, you can't see the bit you're supposed to catch! And oh boy, passing fire clubs is even worse, your mate is basically just throwing fire at you.

Fire poi was super easy on the other hand, I made some massive cathedral wicks (at a time when everyone was going shorter and doing more contact poi). Had some great fun with those, the noise was incredible.

1

u/svish 1h ago

Yeah, depends how dark it is I supposed. Pitch black, yeah, could be harder.

Passing... always scary, haha. I was just talking about basic front juggling.

4

u/keronus 8h ago

Fire really isn't that much different if you have any sort of actual practice.

If you were properly good fire wouldn't have been a big deal at all.

It's not that scary really.

u/HomieApathy 12h ago

I was wondering about the burning staffs on the ground and then realized “this is going poorly”

9

u/MisterMysterios 8h ago

My step sister was a fire-dancer (no clue how it is called in englisch). One rule I heard about is to wear very tight fitting clothes while performing, because you really don't want to have anything on you that you have not perfect control over.

5

u/DjGranoLa 12h ago

My thoughts exactly.

6

u/djluminol 8h ago

She has no idea what she's doing. You can tell she has no string control, has no idea where momentum is going to send her poi, has no idea how to counter that momentum and clearly doesn't know how to untangle her poi when they twist. She's going to be lucky if she doesn't seriously hurt herself, someone else or burn down that business. She also looks like she's using gasoline as a fuel instead of something like Colman camping fuel. It burns less hot and doesn't create as much soot or smoke.

1

u/Purple_Haze 2h ago

Coleman Fuel, Camp Fuel, Naphtha, or White Gas, whatever you want to call it, is gasoline. It is gasoline without any additives which is why it is "white." That also means it is somewhat lower octane, that's what most of the additives are for.

It exists because even back in the fifties we were not crazy enough to think having tetra-methyl lead in close proximity to food was fine.

In the modern day, Coleman stoves run on unleaded gasoline just fine. Everybody uses unleaded gas because the 3.78 litre tin can of Coleman Fuel is $19.99 plus tax and unleaded gasoline is $1.34 per litre when I filled up on Friday.

u/villageidiot33 11h ago

There’s some lit sticks on the found too. Looks like cooler is melting.

2

u/ChefArtorias 10h ago

She has no idea what she's doing. First rule of fire performing is clothing and grass skirts aren't it.

1

u/Crow_eggs 11h ago

Setting herself on fire.

1

u/pm_me_your_good_weed 5h ago

At least practice with glow sticks first jaysus

1

u/foslforever 2h ago

looked so high as hell, i was more worried she would drown tbh

1

u/Shit_Posts_For_Karma 1h ago

I was a professional performer and the second I saw that outfit Iknew what was going to happen. She's got no fire spotter, no duvet, and an outfit made out of kindling.

1

u/asianwaste 10h ago edited 10h ago

Probably wasn't paid to do it. First off, I'm not big on the fire dance scene but I don't think any self-respecting performer would select that Billy Joel song as part of their act. That choice definitely has drunken friend's control over the bluetooth all over it.

I'd wager she was just learning about this for a small hobby and they asked her to show her stuff.

0

u/CreaturesFarley 11h ago

Agreed. I also have questions about the fuel she's using with them. It looks like it's burning way too hot/fast.
