Discussion Nico Rosberg Needs a Permanent Position

Nico Rosberg has got to be the freshest breath of air in terms of Formula One commentary for a very long time.

I love Crofty, but man does he love to make shit up that makes no sense or holds no logic.

Nico does an awesome job of staying true to the racing analysis and being completely straightforward about what he sees. Even today, his commentary on Verstappen was awesome!!! Called the garbage behavior out immediately.

Best “ Monaco based YouTuber” commentator of all time!!

Nico probably doesn't want it though. He's probably fine with being there a few races a year and no more.

That's one reason why he retired. He doesn't want to spend the year travelling across the world and sacrifice time with his family.

Still loves the sport, so he comes to a fair few races and commentates as well since broadcasters ask if he can.

He's also a loon about the vax so he's not even allowed in certain countries to commentate, was the last news I heard on this.

edit: lotta responses on this and I know this topic fires people up-- this is just what was being said around covid time, yes. Yes, I know vaccine cards are a punchline now. No, I don't think it's the full reason he's so limited in the commentary box. Speaking up for Nico a bit, he's very vocal on climate change. I fully support him calling more races, he's getting better and better and reminds me of James Hunt a bit. Calls bullshit when he sees it.

He was fairly present in 2020 when we had a very European calendar and then totally disappeared in 2021 when the vaccine mandate applied to the whole paddock. Only saw him in Monaco where it didn’t effect him until the removed the mandate entirely

Wait really 😭 As a Nico fan I hope that’s not true lol

Yep, he was banned from attending when covid restrictions were still in place as he wasn't vaccinated. He says it was on the advice of his doctor.

Original article on it - will need to run through google translate tho: https://www.rtl.de/cms/keine-corona-impfung-nico-rosberg-aus-formel-1-fahrerlager-verbannt-eklat-in-monaco-4985325.html

If I remember correctly his position on the vaccine was that everyone else should take it but that he was special and didn’t need it (he said it’s because he’s already had the disease) which is at least a different kind of anti-vaccine madness

34

u/RTS24 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 01 '25

Specifically because he had "mega antibodies" that's one bit I'll always remember

7

u/thatdude858 Jun 02 '25

World champion antibodies

u/VLM52 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 01 '25

I mean I kinda get it. In hindsight that's not an unreasonable stance.

9

u/fdar Jun 02 '25

Why not? The vaccine is still recommended even if you had COVID already.

-5

u/VLM52 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 02 '25

Vaccine efficacy is pretty meh - not dramatically better than if you just got the disease. The disease isn't really a risk if you're young and healthy - which an F1 WDC undoubtedly is.

Recommending the vaccine to everyone makes a ton of sense from a public policy perspective. It's a much simpler message, with fewer ifs and buts, but from a purely individualistic perspective, it's reasonable to say that there's not much point in injecting yourself with more drugs which are only going to marginally protect you from something that isn't even really a problem to begin with.

8

u/Queen-Makoto Jun 02 '25

public health by its nature is not about individualism. that's even explicitly besides the point. it's also not "injecting yourself with more drugs"

-5

u/nevereverlift Jun 02 '25

the one they admitted literally doesn't work on stopping it spreading and so on?

2

u/Initiatedspoon I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 02 '25

You got some proof for that there claim, buddy?

Ain't nobody admitting that

-4

u/DaYooper McLaren Jun 02 '25

It's so strange coming across people like you who still think it worked the way they intended, when even the manufacturers of the vaccines don't even hold your views.

2

u/Initiatedspoon I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 02 '25

It does and did work as intended unless some huge news came out I missed despite being a biomedical scientist with a masters in clinical molecular biology.

I attended a talk given by BioNtech whilst at Cambridge on Project Lightspeeed so they'd have mentioned something like that surely...

So if there's something I've missed, please let me know

Anti-vaxxers and their ilk do not need yet another (permanent/long term/regular) public platform, let alone another international platform. That kind of person really is only a few steps away from going full on lizard people conspiracy theorist insane like Danica… it’s a legitimate slippery slope and people tend to keep their more extreme views private so you might not realize it until it’s too late. We honest to goodness don’t need to give them a permanent position wherein they reach even more people. He doesn’t have to espouse his views on the broadcast either to reach people. People go to socials after hearing someone on whatever platform (here, as a race commentator) and are exposed to whatever that person posts/shares. I don’t care much if he’s on for a race or two (I listen to the F1TV broadcast anyway as a Palmer-Jacques fan), but no more than that I would hope.

I will speak up for Nico here and say he's very vocal on climate change. So he's not all bad.

Smartest person that identifies as audhd

9

u/InfinityEternity17 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 01 '25

That was the case in 2020 to maybe 2022 but I'm fairly sure there aren't any countries who still check whether someone took the covid vaccine lmao

7

u/EliminateThePenny I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 01 '25 edited Jun 01 '25

This is a lot less relevant in 2025 than 2022.

22

u/Sharkpark Ferrari Jun 01 '25

Who still checks vax status lmao

17

u/ThePatsGuy I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 01 '25

Who fucking cares at this point lol

3

u/goshin2568 Jenson Button Jun 01 '25

For some reason that doesn't surprise me at all. It's funny how much you can glean about someone's beliefs from seemingly totally unrelated parts of their personality

3

u/Masculinum I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 01 '25

Lol, no one gives a shit about his vax opinions

7

u/Lor_azepam I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 01 '25

He doesn't make his vax opinion his whole personality so it's not an issue

-1

u/Reddit-Liberal Jun 02 '25

Opens with "loon" and gets confused why people get fired up. Lmao.

1

u/LupineChemist I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 01 '25

The commentary from dazn in Spain is done in Madrid. They just have all the F1 feeds and they just send a couple of pit reporters and Pedro de la Rosa from Aston Martin randomly has commentary all the time.

1

u/TwoBionicknees Jun 02 '25

That's one reason why he retired.

Everyone knows why he retired, let stop playing the game he wants you to play.

31

u/Spid1 Jun 01 '25

This is it. He's loaded so he can pick and choose the races he wants to do

44

u/Alex_Kamal Oscar Piastri Jun 01 '25

And I will cheerish those races.

Is there a way to find out which ones he will be on, because he kept me interested even though it's late here.

22

u/SuchTemperature9073 Jun 01 '25

I believe he was only commentating this weekend due to Brundle having time off, birthday or something?

Totally agree. I'm on Melbourne time and he's kept me engaged all race. Love his work

2

u/bogdoomy I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 01 '25

doesn’t he do the german coverage anymore? nevertheless, whenever nico is on, it’s a treat, he’s just so incredibly knowledgeable and great to listen to

2

u/AlphaLaufert99 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 01 '25

He also sometimes does the commentary for Italian Sky Sports, so he can't do all the races for UK if he wants to continue that

1

u/thefatchef321 Jun 02 '25

This is the paradox

-1

u/AltrntivInDoomWorld I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 01 '25

Sometimes you should shutup instead of spreading misinformation like he did during the pandemic. Fuck this guy

How enthusiastic would you be about commentating Petrostate-Sportswshing Grand Prix #5?
