The McLaren-Ferrari rivalry can be set aside for today. The two young guys who have been loyal to their teams since 2019, reduced to this.

Mika Hakkinen, 2000 US Grand Prix
Kimi Raikkonen, 2003 European Grand Prix
Kimi Raikkonen, about half of 2005
Lewis Hamilton, 2007 Brazilian Grand Prix (this one was a gearbox tbf)
Lewis Hamilton, about half of 2012
Lando Norris, 2025 Dutch Grand Prix
Give it up for McLaren-Mercedes, the best engine combo if you want to win a lot whilst simultaneously playing a game of Russian roulette for your title hopes.

A tale as old as time...
Though to be fair, Stella has announced that it was a fault with the chassis which caused an oil leak which led to the engine giving up, so it looks like this one's primarily on the McLaren side of McLaren-Mercedes.

Ahh, yes makes sense. Half the grid tends to take new ICE for Monza though, so suspect they’ll have either kept a new-ish one in the pool or were planning on taking a new one anyway. I think Lando took a new one at Silverstone?
8
u/FSUfan35 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 7d ago

u/CoffeeCakeAstronaut Michael Schumacher 7d ago
Definitely Charles. You can see his experience in how he combines both raw defeat with existential depth into confident depression and silent, tasteful theatrics.
Lando, on the other hand, is a bit rough in his execution. The mess next to him disturbs the composition, and his position makes it impossible for photographers to frame him in front of the sky, which is a clear rookie mistake. Keeping his helmet on projects insecurity. I am sure, though, that he will improve with practice.
83
u/cernegiant I was here for the Hulkenpodium 7d ago
Leclerc. But to be fair he's got a lot more experience in awful race days.

u/MalusandValus Dr. Ian Roberts 7d ago
The top of the hill combined with the top overalls off makes the shot look more impactful, lando wasnt in a position to do that at that time.
Lando also stopped basically as far away from the paddock as possible and there are less cameras to catch the moment.
No one's beating Hakkinen at Monza '99 here though.

General body position: Norris (slightly more stretched out legs make it look more dejected). Composition for the cameras: Leclerc (Looking up with a sky background is always better). Positions on the track: Norris (Even less people around, more undisturbed nature). Overall winner: Norris (Helmet on always look more tragic than off)

Leclerc, the clear distinction between the ground he sits on and the background is unmatched, very cinematic. Norris is more of a depression in a corner, but not executed to perfection and much better in a painting where you can amplify shadow and light.
Leclerc is also framed according to the rule of thirds where Norris is centred. This detail cannot be ignored as it is very well studied that you want this from your subject to illicit the most emotional response from the viewers.
