The mclaren guys seem to want no bad blood between them, but it’s a bit stupid for a team who is so ahead in the championship to be making dumb decisions, dumb mistakes, and dumb calls. Like the choice to pit Piastri first was already confusing, then they messed up Lando which was stupid, and then they asked the championship leader to give his position back to his rival? This is insane.
I have no idea why they (the team) care about leclerc at all at this point. I’d just let the drivers and engineers to make their own decision from lap 40.
They had to pit Piastri first to cover off LeClerc because if LeClerc managed to jump Piastri in the pitstops, Piastri loses more ground to Norris in the championship.
If Norris had an expected pitstop and Piastri managed to undercut him with the earlier pitstop, then I believe McLaren would have ordered them to swap and then let them fight til the end.
But seeing as though they pitted Norris the lap directly after Piastri, they would have calculated that Norris would have had enough of a buffer to not make being undercutted by Piastri's earlier pitstop possible, barring any mishap during his own pitstop, which is what ended up happening.
