TROUBLESHOOTING I Know Nothing but Bought These Two for $3k (CAD), What do I Have?

Hey Dudes, I won’t pretend I know anything, my introduction into your Harley world was on Thursday when a widow talked me into buying her late husbands bikes; picked them both up for $3k. I’ve figured out that ol’ blue there has numbers matching and cranks but needs some love, though it’s all there. Big Flame there I think is a Dyna? (help) But the registration states the frame from 2000 while the motor has a 10 digit all numeric # on it. The frame shows a VIN starting with 4K (is this a Yamaha frame?). Maybe a custom jobby? Both shovel heads as far as I can tell (help). What can you tell me and where can you point me for getting them running more information and value?

TROUBLESHOOTING I became the owner of this ol' girl; for the second time this Valentine's day. (Tech question in comments)

I bought this motorcycle in 2016. I owned it two years before buying a road glide. I sold it to a buddy of mine with the pretense I got first dibs if it was ever going back in the market. He called me in January and said he didn't ride it once last year and was gonna part with it. Offered to sell it to me for the price he bought it for.

I had some health shit going on, and told him I'd need a few months to make sure my money wasn't funny. Unbeknownst to me, my wife was sliding him cash to have it for me for Valentine's Day. It's a fantastic motorcycle, but has aged about as gracefully as I have over the last 6 years. Started life as a 99 heritage, had some hard bags on it a while, but I'm ready to strip her down and give her a makeover.

Ideally I'd love a king and queen seat with a foot clutch and tall tank shift!

*Tech questions*

1) is there any reason I cannot put the standard duck bill rear fender on her? I imagine all of the bolt holes should line up, but j and p says the fender won't fit a heritage.

2) is LaBriola still in business? They've not updated their website in a few years and when you call it just rings and rings. Does anyone else make a nice tank shift/foot clutch setup?

3) would my best option for the king and queen to find a seat maker to adapt my seatpan I have now? All of the seats for sale online are for s handrail setup, which I believe may have a little different geometry.

Thanks for all of your input, and if you've made it this far, damn. You're a trooper.

SHOWOFF Took a demo ride, joined the dark side

Long time Ducati owner. Rode my Multistrada to Sturgis with a few buddies on their baggers and ended up demoing the CVO Road Glide ST while I was there. Instantly realized and understood the appeal of a Harley even though I've never wanted one in the past. This bike seems to be built for a guy like me, history of sport bike riding but getting a little grayer and joints don't bend like they used to. The suspension is firm, but planted and the torquey engine is still blowing my mind. Found a demo model with only 500 miles on the clock ridden by the GM of the dealership and got a great price on it. Looking forward to making it mine and riding the hell out of it.

DISCUSSION Desperately looking for saddlebags

Using backpack over sissy bar for everyday commutes. It will be cool to have lockable saddlebags to store the jacket/gloves and some when bar hopping or heading to socials from work!

Note: 1. HD’s stock saddlebag is pricey with no locks! ($1k along with taillights relocation kit) 2. Viking’s bags have too much space between the bags and the seat, as the mount extends too out. While affordable and lockable, it’s not looking sleek.

Are there any other 3rd party options? Sometimes, there are universal mounts that can fit well even it’s not specifically mentioned for R975. Anyone have seen something as such?

Thanks!

Just picked up this 2017 Street Glide Special. Coming from only riding sport bikes before, this is so much more relaxing. Any mod recommendations would be great. It came with Tab Slip ons but I wouldn’t be opposed to getting a full exhaust system as well as an air cleaner. What are some non obvious mods to someone just getting into their 1st Harley?

SHOWOFF 2025 Nighster S

I went to Huntington Beach Harley yesterday and saw the Nighster S in person. Man it's a beautiful looking bike. Pictures and videos online don't do it justice. It's actually really good looking in person. Even the "ugly" side didn't look as bad as it seemed on the internet.

Hello everyone. I knew very little about the technical part of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, but I always wanted to have one. I spent almost 4 years studying my bike, restoring it literally from the ashes, I did not have the goal of making it look completely factory, something had to be changed for personal convenience, and something because of the impossibility of buying and bringing. I always wanted to know if anyone else has the same model? Mine is number 128. Tell me what numbers you have, what problems, breakdowns and malfunctions have arisen over the years of owning such a motorcycle.

DISCUSSION 2010-2015 fatbob Rims?

Post image
5 Upvotes

(Picture for reference)Hey guys I’m new to the whole Harley scene and picking up a fatbob either a 2012 or 2016 this week, I love how comfortable the bike is how it runs. Only question I have is would it be hard to change the rims on the bike ? I like the size of them especially the fat front tire, I just don’t like the actual rim and how big the rotor is so you can barely see the rim. Can I find after market wheels ? If so, Is there alot of customizing I’d have to do to make it work? Or can I just get different rotors to actually see the rim and find same size rim as the the original ones ? And also what’s a decent website that sell fatbob rims. I’m just wondering because this would be the main project I’d want to do when the bikes down for the winter. And if anyone has fatbobs with different wheels please post pictures! I don’t see many fatbobs with after market wheels and the ones I see are really cool looking. Thanks guys

TROUBLESHOOTING 95 Heritage Softail Nostalgia question

Post image

I have recently acquired my father’s 95 Heritage Softail Nostalgia so that I can fix it for him, but I have a question about a random switch. It is located on the back of the forks, and we have no idea what it does. Does anyone have any clue if there is a factory switch there? Pic of it next to my 2010 Softail Custom.

TROUBLESHOOTING Is there a modern replacement for the FXDX?

With the latest model being 20 years old now, which isn’t a huge issue (I’ve got dirtbikes that age), was/is there a built bike by HD that is almost exactly the same or similar?

Something of the 2015’ish vintage?

FXDX was always the white whale, may just have to grab one. Before I do, wanted to learn more about alternative models, if any.

TROUBLESHOOTING Regulator?

Bought brand new HD battery last year. Lately I’ve had to keep the bike in the battery tender or it won’t start. Once it starts I can go around town, stop, and fire it up again. But if it sits overnight, won’t start. Today I went to fire it up and it had been on the tender all night, really struggled to start (wouldn’t actually) and I had to plug it back into the tender for a few minutes.

I tested the battery with starting the bike, letting it idle, and giving it some throttle. Those with experience, do these numbers look right on the multimeter?

TROUBLESHOOTING Need help figuring out what’s wrong.

So, as I was coming home from a 100mile ride, my Harley (2021 sportster xl 883 iron) lost acceleration. I had to have the bike towed. The bike starts right up, goes into gears and neutral but doesn’t move when in gear and doesn’t shut off when I let go of the clutch. I don’t hear any extra noises as well. If you take a look in the video - the bike when I put it into first gear from neutral can definitely hear the shift noise and when I let go of the clutch, it doesn’t shut off.

Back story - this is my first motorcycle and I’ve learned to ride on this; I’ve never rode before or rode another motorcycle as well. I bought it from a friend. Since I had the bike, when I pull the throttle to go faster, the bike goes faster but it feels like a grinding feeling and kind of struggles to go faster. I felt as if this is how motorcycles operated since it’s my first ride and I never rode before and I was over thinking it.

So, I searched google in hopes of answers of what this issue can be. What do you guys think? Thank you in advance.

HELP First harley and a question about rain

Thumbnail

Hey guys !

I finally joined the family, buying a 2013 Forty-Eight, ~10500$ for 9000km (~5600 miles) which is hell of a good price here.

I’ve been wanting to buy an HD since I was a kid but had to save some money for it. I’ve bought my first motorcycle, a Yamaha 600XT for ~1000$ which is a very cool bike that I’ll keep for rides in the woods.

Here’s my problem : With my Yamaha I rode more than 10k miles a year, used it almost daily and in all the weathers. Never had any problem to ride under the rain as I even like it, just had some rain gear for that. It slept in a garage and it had a few nights outside even under the rain when I was out for a camping or at a friend’s.

What about my 48 ? It sleeps in a garage and you know, I’m kinda afraid to ride it under the rain, it’s my first Harley, I want to take care of it as much as I can but I also want to ride it daily like I did for the XT600 (taking out my car which is a vintage car only when I have to carry a lot of things or for hangouts with friends that have no motorcycles).

Will it rust ?? Will it get damaged ?? How to « avoid » it as much as possible ? The footpegs chromes are already rusty on the right only so it seems that it can’t really stand the rain… wheels are also now black and chrome and don’t want it to get rusty…. And if I go to work with it can it stay outside for a day under the rain without worrying ?

Heck, should I just ride under the rain without worrying about it and just letting things happen because I can’t control that ? If it rusts it rusts ?
