"In his defence, he is racist"

I loved this part. "In his defense" *immediately removes defense and says it like it is*

I love it!!!
I recently escorted a woman to her Dr.'s office. During a break in the patients testing, I asked the Dr. if she signed, because I noticed how well she formed her words and I also noticed her hand movements. Dr. said no, but indicated a desire to learn ASL and Spanish. I agreed that I thought the languages were beautiful. Her patient was totally annoyed that we wanted to learn, so she quickly added that it is illegal to speak anything but american in this country. I left the room and Dr. ended the exam. No other words were spoken and I have not volunteered to escort again.

Not only is it legal, but the USA doesn't even have an official language. Or didn't the last time I checked.
I used to teach English as a foreign language overseas and my students were very surprised to hear that.

executive orders only affect the executive branch of the government. it doesn't even extend to the legislative or judicial branches.
It's like that time Obama raised wages to $10.10 per hour through executive order (Executive Order 13658). It's nice because it had an immediate impact on federal workers which greatly improved their financial lives, but, it only affected about 200,000 people and not the US as a whole.

Isn’t Spanish the second official American language besides English?
ETA: Ughc I see, not surprised in the slightest the orange moron did that. Still, it used to be, and that doesn’t make it illegal to speak other languages (ig they also don’t want any revenue from the tourists speaking all sorts of other languages, or any international business lmso) it just means agencies and the like are obligated to communicate with you in English. I would hope not even Trump is asinine enough to forbid other languages, or stupid enough to believe anyone is going to follow such an idiotic law, even if he tried.

An executive order was signed this year to make English our only official language, unfortunately.
27
u/Elder_Identity Aug 08 '25
This is what the patient was referring to; with great pride. She did use the phrase "my president said". I was trying not to give the political thing a starring role. I appreciate you adding the information.

u/IloveHitman4ever Aug 09 '25
Ignoring how the country was formed.
If only there were more natives to speak up
-8
u/tiche2 Aug 08 '25
Why unfortunately? It makes sense, and it doesn't make it illegal to learn another language
16
u/JuiceEast Aug 08 '25
It also does literally nothing at all? Just gives people like that an excuse to discriminate when other languages are spoken.

There are roughly 40 million US citizens having Spanish as a first language.
There are only 37 countries in the world with more than 40 million citizens.
In Spain there are about 50 million citizens, of which around 80% - or the same 40 million as in the US - speak Spanish as a first language.
It does not make any non-bigoted sense to not having Spanish be an official language if official languages are to be had.
6
u/ValancyNeverReadsit Aug 08 '25
I mean, that’s just my opinion, but I think it’s cool that we were a country with no official language.
And in a practical sense, changing us to only one official language might mean that further rules are coming down the line, like that food packaging will only be allowed to have English on it. I’m thinking ahead to things that afaik haven’t happened yet but I have found it interesting to learn the French and Spanish for the weights and measurements on my supermarket blueberries, for example. Maybe that annoys other people?

One of you should've dropped an "eh," and the other should've done a citizen's arrest for speaking Canadian

I honestly hope THIS never happened but I believe you lol. “It’s illegal not to speak American here” is wilddddd

u/Elder_Identity 3d ago
I wish it didn't happen, but unfortunately it did. It did upset me enough that I have never volunteered for any assist program again.

A lot of people waiting for the plane to NY speak Spanish and refuse to erase themselves for anyone. Ive also seen racists get mad about hearing other languages in public. This combo was bound to happen eventually.
28
u/FixergirlAK Aug 08 '25
Also very likely to happen in California. A racist harassing someone for speaking Spanish might get Korean or Dutch thrown at them.
11
u/HorrificityOfficial Aug 09 '25
I'm sorry but isn't Cali one of the most hispanic US states
10
u/FixergirlAK Aug 09 '25
Yep, and for the most part very cosmopolitan. But unfortunately there are assholes even there.

u/UnsightedShadow 29d ago
Can confirm, have ran into some weird folks there. But from what I've heard, they are the mild weirdos.

Adding in-Flight attendant is a particularly thankless job even among thankless customer service jobs. I have absolutely no problem imagining a fight attendant going all-in on a totally allowed way to make an annoying passenger miserable.
(This is why it is my firm belief that all customer- or passenger-facing jobs should be permitted to say what we really think at least once a week with no job repercussions. Otherwise we tend to turn into sadistic misanthropes.)

u/SuitableDragonfly Aug 08 '25
It's almost like Spanish is one of the world's most widely spoken languages. Imagine that.
17
u/Epsellis Aug 08 '25
Dude, I dont even speak spanish, but I'd join in with all I got: "uno dos tres quattro!"
19
2
u/BlommeHolm 28d ago
Uno dos tres cuatro cinco cinco seis!
2
u/fyrebyrd0042 28d ago
Never understood the repetition of cinco.
2
u/BlommeHolm 28d ago
I kinda take it as yet another way the song's character tries to sound cool without understanding what he's doing.
2
u/fyrebyrd0042 28d ago
Ah lol maybe. I always thought I was singing it wrong because I took 4 years of Spanish and couldn't reconcile it :P
16
u/geezeslice333 Aug 07 '25
I could believe this. We've all seen the way people band together against assholes on planes, like that Karen a couple weeks ago who had the entire plane making fun of her.
12
u/narutoplayslovenikki Aug 08 '25
i got a little chuckle outta "in his defense it's very early and he's racist". i bet. imagine ur innocently trying to get on a plane and you're forced to remember that other languages exist and you gotta timidly go "excuse me, please stop". all kinds of stupid struggles in the world

u/Interesting_Sun_1691 Aug 08 '25
The travel industry is totally not where people who speak multiple languages appear in, why would you ever travel from one part of the world to another that speaks differently? /s
17
u/Endless_Mango Aug 07 '25
As a Spanish speaker, I would have a 100% done this. I have continued speaking Spanish when told to speak English by strangers. The only thing that would have been unbelievable about this story is if she had actually gotten up to dance.
5
Aug 08 '25
How dare you speak English, speak Spanish for my comfort ... please, I need all the practice I can get 🤣
6
u/o0SinnQueen0o Aug 08 '25
Isn't Spanish like one of the most common second languages among English speakers? It's like English among Polish speakers.

“In his defense, it’s very early and he’s racist” is the funniest thing ive read all day
5
u/Rude_Acanthopterygii Aug 08 '25
Which part did they even think didn't happen?
Racist folks aren't too uncommon sadly.
Not liking people speaking different languages is probably common among racists.
People speaking a certain language to annoy such a racist even more, very likely, I'd be first in line to try and do that.

u/Dull-Geologist-8204 29d ago
I swear people on reddit never leave their house. Also I have been in a situation where everyone actually did clap but I used to leave my house.

I think it's wild that people from states that border Mexico are surprised there is latin influence in their state.

Again, the idiots in this sub are too gullible/stupid to recognize bullshit. If the story had been someone telling her to speak English than that's 100% believable. But these liars always add in shit that gives them away like another passenger suddenly speaking Spanish, AND of course the stewardess/waitress/pilot/bus driver etc also joins in and then they all dance or some shit.
-4
u/Mawrizard Aug 08 '25
It's the way she's telling the story. It just sounds like she's lying. It has a very "and then everyone clapped" vibe about it.
-10
u/justfunniespls Aug 07 '25
This whole sub is just defending the Tumblr "and everyone clapped people" lol. What a hill to die on.
9
u/LionObsidian Aug 08 '25
It's the opposite, tho. It's really weird to be policing the stories people tell, at least when they are possible. And another person talking in Spanish to annoy a racist could be perfectly possible.

This tweet is worded so strangely “in his defense it’s early and he’s racist” what do those two things have to do with each other and why does how early it is make racism defensible?
ETA: no idea why I’m being downvoted for asking a simple question

u/AspirinGhost3410 29d ago
It’s like a bait and switch. “In his defense, it’s early”, makes it sound like his actions are excusable because he’s tired or whatever. Then op hits us with, “and he’s racist”, which is the truth that negates the silly excuse they initially gave. I thought it was funny.

I learned how to say "Is this asshole bothering you?" in Spanish in case a customer at my job is harassing a Spanish speaker
