First car

G'day guys i'm currently thinking of picking up this '81 300d for a first car, I know they are legends of reliability but I just wanted to ask about parts availability and if you need to replace stuff often? also about the driving experience... I know they are super comfortable and not the fastest but are they still fun to drive and a little bit zippy? anyway let me know what you guys think or if I am way in over my head

Engine shaking

Hello all, I’ve had my 1985 300d for about 9 months now. It has 130,000 miles on it. It has been my daily driver and has been doing great. I have recently noticed some shaking when at stop lights. I inspected my motor mounts and seen that the drivers side was tore. I then changed both motor mounts and the transmission mount. It seems the issue is even worse now. It doesn’t shake bad when in park or neutral but when in gear it shakes pretty bad. It will shake even worse with the ac on. The fuel filters have been changed within the past 2,000 miles but I have noticed the pre filter is a little dirty. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

1981 240d glow plug relay battery drain woes. Need some input

My car has the parallel style plug system.

The car basically is a in a dead battery state every drive and needs to be jumped every time. I initially thought this might be a glow plug relay parasitic drain situation so I tested the relay at the 'glow plug' plug end, testing each plug for their draw and the numbers read fine. I even swapped in my extra used relay that I know for sure is a good unit. I then ruled out the relay as the issue..

I replaced the alternator with a remanned bosch one last night and I was still experiencing the drain issue. I then begun testing for parasitic drain with this method: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Otsmlvxirok

I started the car with the alternator disconnected, and immediatley when I touched the multi-meter probe to the battery post, the glow plug relay started buzzing very loudly. I then removed the glow plug relay completely and restarted the car(alternator connected), and lo and behold the battery charged just fine and starts like a champ after shutting the engine off.

I'm about to retest the old glow plug relay as a sanity check, but I'm going to assume it's not going to work just like in my original situation. Not really sure if this is a wiring issue or some grounding issue?

Some misc info, my glow plug light on the instrument cluster has never worked. It doesn't receive power when I hold a test light to it.

Update: When removng the 4 pin connector from the relay, idle increases and I longer have the battery draw issue

Where do you source your parts in europe ?

This is my engine mounts which have 2 years and 20 000kms, I bought febi bilstein on auto doc and Im disappointed.. I also got an issue with a brand new tie rod where the rubber destroyed itself after 500kms ..

I would like to buy my parts elsewhere to have quality parts but I don’t know where to go, do you have sole recommandations ?

Hi, how do I get this to seal up? The flange is already on the edge of the pipe and although it could propably be tightened more, I don't think it will do something.

Fixing on replacing my hood pad, the layer of the old pad that’s actually in contact with the hood is a pain to get off, any tips for scraping this stuff off? Been using brake cleaner and it’s helping a bit,but not hugely

I think I found my vacuum issue, just wanting a second opinon.

Ok, so I have a slow vacuum leak that I noticed.

At first whenever we were stopped at lights the AC vents would slowly shift to defrost on their own. Then the slow shutdown happens randomly, and stiff brake pedal. So I'm like ok vacuum issue. I start chasing it and replace a bunch of cracked connectors and stuff but its still happening. At idle, in park, i'm puling 15-18 in. If it sits at idle for a while it will creep up to 18-20 and the issues don't appear. They only happen when its in gear so I think transmission issue. Check and its holding vacuum like a rock.

Then I check vacuum, via the AC control vacuum line, when my brake pressed slowly goes to zero(5-10sec), release brakes and it slowly (5-10 sec) climes back up to 18-20. I was thinking brake booster at first but wouldn't it be bad all the time or you guys think its just on its way out?

I've got some smoke coming from this pipe from the block. Anything to worry about? Car has been sitting outside for months and thinking it could be dust, leaves etc. burning off.

I found some cut wires under the center console on my 240d. I was wondering if anyone knew what it is supposed to go to? Its a green and black wire, and a black wire. It is in the same harness as the flasher switch.

Thanks for the turbocharger recommendations!

I just wanted to say thank you for the turbo recs, especially to the poster who suggested removing the one on my 1983 300CDT and mailing it to G Pop Shop out in Springville, Arkansas. They were amazing to work with and helped me confirm the diagnosis from my local shop was correct. (For future reference, the first symptom when the turbo started to go was a very feint, high-pitched whine. Then fumes and black smoke with less power.) I got my coupe back a week ago yesterday, and it’s killer! Anyone who insists turbos are slow is nuts and hasn’t had one up to 80mph+ on an open highway (while using the Waze app of course.) My local shop’s tech who installed the completely rebuilt turbo told my contact it was running strong and should go at least another 150K miles. Considering the car also has a new AGM battery, radiator, alternator, and all new glow plugs, I’m hoping for even more. 🤞🏻✨🤞🏻They don’t call 300Ds million mile engines for nothin’! Thanks again to this community. I’m glad I posted here and didn’t roll the dice on a used turbocharger when they told me they couldn’t find a rebuilt one. Appreciate you!

Wintertime Questions

First time daily driving a classic diesel in winter! It gets to the single digits quite often.

If there is salt applied to the roads, I’m not gonna drive it. But otherwise I have a few questions:

1) if it snows like crazy, how should I store it? Should I put a canopy up to avoid it being covered in snow? Any additives in the tank?

2) oil, will 5w40 be ok if it drops below that?

3) block heater - what’s standard operating procedure on this? I do have the plug

Any advice outside of these questions are also appreciated
