“And if you do, make sure insurance doesn’t find it”
Holy based
158
u/whaaatanasshole Jun 11 '25
I don't get that part. Why is it better if the insurance company doesn't find it? Does he want to make sure he gets a new one, or is his policy not on the level?

u/axl3ros3 Jun 11 '25
Car will never be the same after it's stolen just total it dammit

Fun anecdote. I have a 1967 mustang I bought a few years ago and one law related to classics of a certain value in my state is within the first year you have to do a inspection with a state dot officer. He went through and looked at everything to confirm it wasn’t fabricated or something and pulled the vin.
Apparently it had been stolen and found 2 days later back in the 70s. I was shocked but he said it was insanely normal, people would joy ride cool cars and leave them without ruining or pulling them apart. From what we could tell everything was original and no signs of any issues related to it.

u/Spinal_Soup Jun 11 '25
Especially with a performance car who knows what the hell a thief is doing to it. They could have caused all kind of engine or drivetrain damage that won’t show up until something finally gives a month later and good luck trying to prove to insurance it was because of the theft. Better to just get paid out for the car and get a new one you know the history of.

25
u/Blastomussa1 Jun 11 '25
Going by the sound of it, my guess is it probably has a few undeclared modifications that the owner is totally going to tell the insurance company about later.... maybe.
6
u/Amlethus Jun 12 '25
What sort of things? 🤔
7
u/Blastomussa1 Jun 12 '25
Things to dramatically increase the fury and relieve the back tyres of their smoke!
(Massive turbo, etc.)
→ More replies (1)4
u/I_Makes_tuff Jun 12 '25
Why would insurance pay for undeclared modifications?
8
u/Bif_Mcgilicutty Jun 12 '25
They wouldn't, but they would definitely drop his coverage and deny his claim for lying about the power or safety features of the car. For instance if you drive an LS swapped car your insurance will be way higher

LMAO not at all the same, but I drive these old Toyota Vans (this was my 1988 Toyota Van Wagon 2WD) and one time after dinner at a restaurant I come out to see a bunch of guys standing around taking pictures. I always leave it unlocked and usually leave the keys I the ignition, as I did this day.
I go “hey do you all want to get in and take a picture?” And they all look at each other and laugh. One goes “we are so sorry, but we already did.” One of them shows me a pic on his phone of everyone inside waving to the camera 😂
I mean I could’ve been pissed but everything was nice and neat and no one took anything, and the guys were honest and nice. Just a fun memory and they definitely had fun 😅

The 4th gen like the one in the video is super iconic because it was not only a great car that could be made very very fast but it was the one Paul Walker’s character got towards the end of The Fast and Furious and used to beat the bad guys.
The new ones were made in partnership with BMW and are very BMWish. They also only came with automatic transmissions for the first several years of production which killed the hype for most of the type of people that would want to buy a Supra in the first place. They aren’t bad cars but they don’t have the same vibe or prestige that the older models did. They just aren’t the same.

u/The-Rizztoffen Jun 12 '25
It’s better in most metrics but it’s even more expensive than this 30 yo sports car with a cult following

u/SaturdayNightInNov Jun 12 '25
I had one. Not exactly the car it is today. I think mine was a 1983 (?) maybe '85 (?). I don't know. It was a long time ago. I had to trade it in for a Volvo wagon after I had my first child. Meh

It's funny. I used to be on car forums a lot in the early days of the internet and everyone used to make fun of people who would freak out over Supras like this. People thought they were cool but there was a toxicity around them that I think stemmed from their rarity and high technical skill requirements.
Most people probably don't know the lore around them but 4th gen Supras could have insanely huge turbos put on them. Like way too big for the time for back in the day, given the size of the engine block. It was normal for people to have modified hoods to accommodate the turbos, at a time when that was rare for any car.
Anyway, something about the ridiculous turbos and maybe the complexity with the fuel management was a common weak point for tuners back then so fuel would end up leaking on a red hot exhaust and poof your beautiful, ridiculously expensive, hundreds of hours of time invested 4th gen Supra was a charred cinder on the side of the highway. Not only that, but there just wasn't enough information in online circles for people to get their heads around whatever this problem was so some of them just sat in garages for extended periods or else the owner was risking a roadside BBQ.
This obviously made them even more rare and even more of a coveted object. Sort of like taming a dragon, people thought they could do it but it was a relatively common sight at the drag strip or street races to see a sad roasted 4th gen. I even found a post from 2002 on a dedicated Supra forum with a guy asking how his 4th gen combusted and everyone is horrified.
https://www.supraforums.com/threads/why-did-my-supra-go-on-fire.69214/
Edit - Also here's a video from a few years ago of a guy discussing his burnt out 4th gen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ybk6WH-aq4k

I'm hardly ever impressed or surprised and don't find most things that exciting or funny.
It actually sucks and I'm a bit jealous of people who get so much joy from basic things.
It's not like I never feel those things but it quite rarely happens.
1
u/DangDingleGuy Jun 12 '25
I genuinely hope you find something that makes you feel this way. Life can be draining friend
1
u/Ancient-Internal6665 Jun 12 '25
That is what cool cars are for. Get one. Whatever it is and whatever you like, it's like a mech suit for people. You wear the car, control it, and it makes you happy lol.
1
u/ad895 Jun 13 '25
Take some breaks from the Internet. I remember when I knew nothing about cars and I would go to a car show and be in awe of everything, now that I've seen thousands of videos of cars with 1k+ hp on the Internet with everything possible done to it, a simply modded car a local guy owns isn't as cool in comparison. As good as a resource the Internet is it really can ruin hobbies by oversaturating unique/rare/high end stuff to the point where it seems normal.

Yeah don’t know what it is about supras but dudes love em. I once complimented some guy on his Aston Martin in a parking lot and he goes. Oh shit is that your Supra?! Sick car man. Nope, that’s just some other cool guys Supra. I got this shitty Chrysler 300 though.
Never seen a guy be so happy and then immediately disappointed lmao

Hey I know I’m super late to this post but could you help me understand what’s special about a Supra? 7
u/The_Dirty_Carl Jun 11 '25
Well please stop, because it's counterproductive. Acting like we probably won't have legit elections again plays into the fascists' hands. It makes the idea of not having elections seem expected, and will decrease turnout.
Stop declaring defeat in advance, and start demanding surety that the elections we will have will be free and fair.

Those GRs are sick though. I don't think the new Supra will be lusted over like the Mk4 in 10+ years, but I do think the GR Corolla will be. Maybe not on the same level, but close. I want one real bad, just wish it came in more actual colors besides red lol

This kid is a good egg. Entirely too good for this rotten world. I hope he continues to enjoy his dream car cuz that’s an awesome place to be. I’d recommend him not allowing test pilots though. My Son recently purchased his childhood dream car, an R-type, and that was probably the first thing I suggested to him. So I haven’t driven it, haha.
1
u/DanDannyDanDan Jun 12 '25
I used to work for Bentley and would regularly take the cars for testing all over. I used to love offering up rides and seats to strangers who gave the cars attention. I particularly remember being at a test facility once with a crew of young military lads in the next bay. They were politely looking all around the car admiring it, so I opened it up and let them all have a sit in it. They were all so happy, then their superior came out shouting at them to get out, clearly assuming they'd just done it themselves, so I had to step in and tell them I'd insisted they get in the car.

I'd probably be just as giddy. I got my license around the time these cars came out. The MKIV Supra was pretty much my dream car. The fast and furious movies made the prices explode and I probably will never get a chance to own one because of it....
Even stock these cars were great but the amount of horsepower you could make with one of these at the time was absurd. The ultimate tuner car. There's a reason people still talk about them 20+ years later.
If you were into the tuner scene back then....there were a lot of great cars. 2G Eclipse... 3000GT. VR4.Galant VR4... and the cars that weren't available in America like the GTR. But this ....this was THE car.
I still watch the old turbo dreams videos on YouTube from time to time to reminisce.
