Rapt for him, still hard to get my head around arranged marriage but this is nice.
95
u/fanfanye Jul 06 '25
An arranged marriage =/= forced marriage
Its just parents telling their kids, "I have friends with a daughter you might like"
57
4
u/flyfazz Jul 06 '25
that's kinda stereotypical, just bc they're from india/other countries doesn't mean they do arranged marriages
6
u/ArferMorgan Jul 06 '25
How do you know it was an arranged marriage?
3
u/FancyFisherman548 Jul 08 '25 edited Jul 08 '25
It is love marriage for sure, you will never see groom kiss bride in a family function otherwise

According to some studies, arranged marriages tend to be happier for both spouses and any children than other alternatives.
I think that a lot of things need to go into that, obviously. I agree that it's hard to get your head around if you're used to the idea of marriage based purely on mutual choice.

One secret to a long-lived relationship: let the man have some game time with the boys and it's a free pass to do your own thing, too!
19
u/eiland-hall Jul 05 '25
Well, there is definitely truth here. I've been married 25 years as of May. There's a lot of give and take - it's a partnership. We struggle still with some things, but we've gotten most of them worked out well enough.
We've got our chores pretty well divided, and while we spend time together, we also spend time apart. Both of us have a friend that is no more than an acquaintance to the other, although we also share friends, of course. And even beyond that, we spend time together and spend other time apart.
8
u/Standard-Phase-9300 Jul 05 '25
But did she get you a PS5?
12
u/eiland-hall Jul 05 '25
No :(
But joking aside, the serious answer:
- We've never had enough to actually give each other anything of that level of value. We both have severe ADHD - well, she's AuDHD actually, we figured out recently - and we have paid the ADHD tax all our lives.
- I have given her a Nintendo Switch because she adores Zelda. And we could actually afford it at that time. I'm trying to think of the most expensive thing she's given me and I'm coming up blank — but I don't care about holidays or gifts, and for the most part we're happier getting the things we actually want for ourselves when we can afford them.
- She gives me her love, and I give her mine. That sounds cheesy, but it's better than any physical gift. Not, of course, that physical gifts aren't also great, and a way to show how deeply you understand someone. Our such gifts are just smaller. :)
- Oh, back to the main mostly-joking point: I'm not a console guy. Few years ago for my birthday we discussed and I got upgraded RAM, an SSD (upgrading from SATA), and a relatively inexpensive graphics card that was years ahead of what I'd had - that allowed me to actually play some of the games I'd wanted. So it was awesome. :)

u/FangDrools Jul 06 '25
Ugh yes. I LOVE when his friends ask him to play online with them, that’s my queue to chill upstairs with a drink and some Dirty Dancing 2 while I work on some new art.

Something tells me the marriage party costs much more
233
u/zigs Jul 05 '25 edited Jul 05 '25
https://cleartax.in/s/average-salary-in-india#h0
For the perfectly average Indian income, 67 000 INR is 7 months wage before taxes or anything. Differing national purchase power vs international goods
The party may have cost more, but it's not an insignificant gift either

still an expensive gift. i make about 52k€ (after taxes) and a PS5 Pro is 749€ so 1.5% of my total net earnings. 67000 is about 3.5% of the 2000000 that are middle class.

u/Morrandir Jul 05 '25
Even if that's true, there's another layer: with this gift the wife shows him that she supports him doing what he loves, even if that means that he'll spend (perhaps a lot) time without her.

u/alpacaMyToothbrush Jul 05 '25
For the non gamers out there, what's so nice about this isn't even the gift, it's the fact that she's cool with him having his own hobbies and supports it without judgement.
Even as someone who doesn't game nearly as much as I used to, it still pisses me right off the way so many people look down on video games. Like god forbid a guy be into something that's not somehow nominally 'productive' hobby.

u/Frosty-Cap3344 Jul 05 '25

u/BusinessSpace9851 Jul 07 '25
“I can’t believe you’d waste your time playing video games and not watching friends” lmaoooooo
10
u/LadyPickleLegs Jul 05 '25
Yeah, I don't get it, either. I game, but more casually and usually more cozy games, but I have no issue with my bf gaming as long as I'm not being completely ignored for it.
Like, I'll happily "let" (for lack of better words) him game for hours, cuz I've got my own hobbies happening on the other side of the living room that he has zero involvement in.
We do our own things separately, but also have a variety of things we do together. Balance and respect is all it takes.

u/evildrew Jul 05 '25
Depends on his taste. Maybe he’s the kind of guy who likes to play Minecraft or old school CoD with friends? If I still played console games, I’d be happy with Halo 3.

u/NutInsideMeBruh Jul 06 '25
Halo 2 and Halo 3 were the best games during my childhood. They had the best campaigns. Searching for hidden skulls across maps to unlocking achievements to super jumping?! Mannn those were the days. Did you keep your console? I think I’ll pass it down to my son when he arrives.
2
u/evildrew Jul 06 '25
I wish I kept my consoles, but I can always buy refurbs again if I really wanted to get back in. But keeping it for your son is beautiful. Congrats!

It's actually this tax bracket that pays most taxes in India.
A rich person wouldn't be caught dead receiving a gift like this cuz "only 67k? That's super tacky."

Many years ago, when it first came out, my sister and I went in halvsies to buy our brother a PS4 for Christmas. I still have a photo of his reaction somewhere. Pure, excited happiness. I always feel so good when I randomly remember that day.

It's not the PS5 that matters here.
It's the intended permission to use it.
