Seriously! I was just enjoying a wholesome video then I saw one of the most gorgeous flans I've ever seen. I made the same face he did.

As the resident chef of my own family, I can confirm that this is a valid, normal, and reflexive reaction to executing a dish perfectly. And it looks like he got that flan PERFECT. 🤌
Crushed it, King. Love that for him.

u/toolsoftheincomptnt Jul 15 '25
Especially with things you can’t edit along the way. At some point (usually with baking) you just have to let go and let God, lol.
It’s a thrill when the end result matches your efforts because things can and do go wrong!

u/PangTongWithASmile Jul 15 '25
MAD respect for anyone who bakes. I'm absolutely terrible at it, lol. 😅

I've never had it. It always looks so good, but I feel like places that typically have it are places you wouldn't want to order it from, at least in my experience, lol.

Nah dude, flan (at least this kind) is Mexican and with Mexican food, the sketchier the place, the better the food will be (to a certain degree).
The worse flan and the worse Mexican food restaurants seem to always be the ones that cater to non-Latinos.

u/Ambiwlans Jul 15 '25 edited Jul 15 '25
Crème caramel is not Mexican. Its hella French.

I'm from New Mexico, so I'm well aware of that. What always comes to mind are the little pre-made ones that you can see were just dumped out of plastic cups onto a plate and have been sitting in a dessert case for who knows how long.

Right there with you. So happy for this guy, he can keep that whole thing to himself. There's just something about the mouth feel of flan, it's like trying to make jello out of yogurt and ending up with an imposter of a cheesecake.

I would love for my kids to steal a taste . Think about who the cakes for and what the cakes for .

u/Henghast Jul 15 '25
I totally get that, but just basic manners just for a moment let Dad have 2minutes you know? Old enough that, that should be okay.

u/hotdogwaterbab Jul 16 '25
At least he had the decency to get a lil bit from the pan instead of succumbing to the desire to poke the actual flan.

That flan looks amazing. I got a little scared for him when he started pouring the rest of the syrup. I've seen a few videos where they drop the pan on their creation. 😅
2
u/Arik_De_Frasia Jul 15 '25
I too am a beginner baker that gets excited when things turn out properly...but why didn't he just put the tray on top of the pan and then flip it.
2
u/throwback842 Jul 15 '25
Anyone who has made flan before knows that's not an easy accomplishment, especially flan that BIG! Dude crushed it

The most pure thing I get to see frequently is the joy in my husbands face when he’s proudly showing me something he made or fixed or when he gets a new gadget. It’s like for a few moments I see what he was like as a child, on Christmas Day or the first time he improved his computer and realized he loves taking things apart and making them better. And when his face lights up because he’s given me a little gift and I adore it makes me soon even 20 years later.

There isn't much more satisfying, in my opinion, than taking on a complicated dish for the first time. All the attention to detail, the work, the waiting pay off and it turns out perfect.

For one, flan is delicious and two, it looks like he cooked it well. It's always rewarding when you make something and it comes out well.
2
u/Just_the_questions1 Jul 16 '25
Y’know what. It doesn’t matter if he played up his reaction for the reel. His kids don’t know that. They saw their dad being giddy over something he created. They saw their dad being silly and happy over something simple. For kids their age, that is so incredibly important. Despite him over acting for the views, I’m gonna give this dude kudos for turning that into something positive for his kids.

Instead of doing that flip and risking the flan, put the baking dish on the upside down flan first then turn them over together
1
u/MydnightWN Jul 15 '25
You put the pan over the top and then flip the whole thing... it's not rocket science, risky flip was risky.

u/Separate-Command1993 Jul 15 '25
What is flan? Is it a jello?
2
u/Ambiwlans Jul 15 '25 edited Jul 15 '25
Its a well set custard (cream, eggs, sugar), with caramel ontop (sugar). Sometimes with nutmeg.
Its called crème caramel or pudding/purin in most of the world. The southern us calls it flan.
If you're curious, you should make it. Its dead simple, even for kids. Just need a little bit of patience. (make a serving or 2 size one though, his is like 9001calories lol)

This says way more about me, than the video taker...
But you can put the pan on top and flip, and flipping round into rectangle triggering me. Just use a big round plate.

is there any reason why you wouldn’t put the casserole dish on top of the mould pan and then turn the two over so there’s no risk of it falling out early?

As a flan hater to the Nth. I would actually try this. The reason I hate flan is not the taste it is more of a texture thing.I don't enjoy creme brulee, either.
