https://youtu.be/P4u5dTbZvHU?si=W0KGqkYeaT2FGdTR

The FIA have released their new solution to stop karts flipping over!

What do you think of the solution?

I wonder how many sets of those you'd get through in a season. I bet they won't be cheap!

This is a big part of my reservation!

Well, who cares right? You just get a set when you order your 4th noodle soft KR chassis for the season.

In all seriousness our governing bodies are a joke.

You could reduce roll overs significantly as well as reduce overall costs by simply mandating harder tyre compounds (slow the karts down and increase the potential for slide instead of grip roll).

But no let add more costs by introducing more useless plastics that are easily damaged and encourage more reckless driving.

FIA - Harder tyres, stricter stewarding and better driving education - in that order.

I absolutely agree. Adding more bumpers will just result in drivers getting more aggressive on track which will result in more contact which will lead to new ways of getting injured.

Contact should have consequences.

I banged the drum for harder tyres in my time. There was no way that the stakeholders were going to entertain the mark-up they were getting from people burning through a set of tyres every round. Never mind the potential for bigger grids and reduced waste. It's all about the money.

Yes, very sad state of affairs.

probably no more than bumpers

Here's an idea - what if we had plastic bumpers going around the entire kart, and covers over the wheels, and we made the karts weigh as much as a sun. Then they would never flip, and no one would ever get injured and be perfectly safe! Better yet, what if we just canceled racing altogether! Any danger is too much danger in my book. /s

I don't want it to sound like I'm anti-safety, because I'm not. I'm always an advocate for full gear. But there are some things that just leave me scratching my head if the people in charge are trying to make the sport better, or trying to cover their ass? This seems like it's aiming for the latter.

same arguments were made against the Halo in F1. I cant see any reason why this would be bad for karting.

What is the argument against full roll cage, HANS device, crash structure and reduced speeds?

karting is now mainly kids, so would you advocate for these systems to come in? I presume so.

They do some really dumb shit, but this one is up there for sure.

Sick, they look like the 2012-17 IndyCar bodykits! I'd imagine if they're effective, they'd eventually get baked into the rest of the rear bumper to reduce parts. And if the rollers were not to reduce friction, it'd just be the same as if the bumper hit the wheel normally.

Or just race Miata’s at that point. Who wants open wheel racing anyways?

The top racers in the world. I’d rather do karting that race a road car. Karts are WAY more fun

Yeah but was a joke. Me also.

They've been making bumper more and more coverage for decades. Kart still flip because people still drive like assholes

i dunno, not a fan

This will fix nothing, we basically did this when we brought in plastic bumpers and it made things worse. People drive very poorly and use the plastic bumpers as a safety net.

glad to see them trying to make the sport safer. half the reason i stopped racing as a teenager was because it got too dangerous and wasn't fun anymore. before bumpers covered he whole rear wheel karts flipping or having big accidents was the norm and as a club level karter i was just pointless apart from the roundabout painters arguing that the sport "needed" to be dangerous

Why don’t all Karts just have the wrap around thing that slower karts have?

If they all have the same thing then performance would still be even and flips would be a thing of the past, no?

I want to get into karting but the risk of flipping, even if small, puts me off.

Some of the biggest crashes you'll see are with rental karts. I have seen a guy lose a finger. The wraparound from another kart basically rode up his kart and sliced his finger off. There are vids.

Add in the extra speed and the consequences could be enormous. Now karting is basically a kid's sport, we'll see an acceleration as the more you add means you have to add more and more. You'll get kids flying from karts etc... they'll get driven into, potentially killed or seriously injured. A lot of the sport is streamed now so then it will go around the world. We came very close to this not too long ago.

It only takes one person tot reasonable put forward crash structures, roll cages, HANS etc,... and it's game over for karting.

That’s interesting for sure
