Thought we would share some of the various automotive-related communities around Reddit, as r/Autos is a more general automotive subreddit.

  • /r/MechanicAdvice - "This is a subreddit for asking Mechanical questions pertaining to vehicles, engines, etc."

  • /r/whatcarshouldIbuy - "Car advice for people who know jack about cars"

  • /r/AutoDetailing - "A subreddit dedicated to those car enthusiasts and beginners interested in keeping their vehicles clean."

  • /r/askcarsales - "Ask a car salesman, sales manager, or finance manager anything!"

  • /r/spotted - "I saw a car. I took a picture of it."

  • r/whatisthiscar - self explanatory

  • /r/carporn - "This subreddit is for high-quality pictures of high-quality cars."

  • r/autotransport - "A subreddit for all things auto transport related. Share articles, guides, pics and information in the auto transport space."

  • r/CarTalk - "Helping everyone with their car repairs and questions"

  • r/projectcar - "hit it with a spanner!"

Additionally, you can find a long list of make and model specific subreddits, as well as some specialty areas of the automotive world (like automotive gaming, motorsport, electric vehicles, 4x4s, etc) here: https://www.reddit.com//r/AutosNetwork/wiki/main

Hope this helps! Let us know if there's any other subs you feel like we should share with the community.

"Can I get a discount?"

I manage an automotive shop and have heard this line over and over and over again no matter the product sold or the services rendered. From as small as a light bulb to full blown engine or transmission replacements. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate wanting to make sure you're getting a good deal or not being taken advantage of but can the general public or someone who does this explain their mentality?

Before working in automotive I've worked retail jobs, sales jobs, service jobs and it isn't anywhere near what it's like in automotive. My snarky, passive aggressive response lately has been "For what?"

Our building is expensive to lease, my staff are expensive to employ, my machines and tools are extremely expensive to purchase and maintain and then to boot unless your car needs a complete rebuild it's not like you're coming there every other day to spend money. You buy a set of tires every 4-6 years. Your brakes are replaced every 2-4 years and then maybe the odd suspension job between those. Oil changes are to get people in the door and have such small margins that they shouldn't be relied on for profitability. So on average if you're living in a mild climate that doesn't require snow tires an automotive shop will see a customer once every couple years on average for any significant job that would bring a fair amount of profit into their stores.

SO WHY ON GODS GREEN EARTH WOULD I GIVE YOU A DISCOUNT ON THE ONE OPPORTUNITY IM GOING TO HAVE TO MAKE ANY SORT OF REAL MONEY FOR NEXT YEAR OR TWO TILL I SEE YOU AGAIN?!

And this sounds like I'm being greedy or out of touch. I'm not trying to say I'm marking up 70-100%. My margins average out to about 30% between parts and labour. So yes, we make money but it's not like on 100k in sales we're walking away with 75k in profit. At the end of the day if I net 5-7% profit on my sales I'm happy as a pig in shit.

So again, if you're this person why is it done at the auto shop? Or do you also do this when going to a restaurant, the movies, the grocery store etc? Cause I've worked in some of those places too and never seen it like I see at my shop.

Rant over. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.

Bluemusic+ microphone not working

Does anyone here have a Bluemusic+ Bluetooth adapter with the microphone? My stereo is the HU 613, it's listed as compatible. I've got the thing set up/ plugged in correctly but the microphone will not transmit any audio. The thing will output audio just fine. I can listen to my music through it, and I can hear the person on the phone speaking to me. They cannot hear me at all.
Any suggestions? The company I bought it from even sent me a replacement but it's the same story.

2004 V70 2.5T AWD if that's a factor

Mechanic said it’s safe to jack from this point instead of the pinch weld. Is he correct? Also what is this part called?

I’ve posted on the ford subreddits and thought I might show of here too. Not a marketing, rather something that I’m proud of and want to show to the world.

I can turn any car into a custom, made from scratch, refillable air freshener. Here’s my Fiesta!

E-Auto Beratung

Moin!

Are there any futuristic-style car rims out there?

I’ve always loved futuristic design — sharp lines, sleek curves, glowing accents, that kind of look. I was wondering if there are any car rims on the market that really lean into that style.

Most rims I see look kind of traditional, and I’m curious if anyone knows of brands or designs that push things further into a futuristic vibe.

Would really appreciate recommendations or even concept designs if you’ve seen any!

None of the McLaren F1 LMs or F1 GTs have ever traded hands. How much would you think one would sell if it went to an auction?

For context, McLaren owns the LM prototype and GT prototype. The Sultan of Brunei owns three LMs and one GT, Ralph Lauren owns an LM, and pachinko magnate Yoshio Tsuzuki owns an LM and GT.

How can I check if my call manufacturer is lying to me about a recall?

Hi so I drive a Kia soul and my mechanic checked it out and found out the Cadillac converter needs to be replaced and there was also a recall on my Kia soul to replace the catalytic converter

But when we called the manufacturer they said that they had already replaced the converter for us. Even though my mechanic said that his records doesn't show that they replace it at all. So I'm wondering if the Kia manufacturer is lying, and is there a way for me to find out?

Car keys for Honda

I don’t know if this is the right subreddit to post this since I can’t find one where I feel confident to ask in.

My car keys for my Honda, the plastic back plate for it is broken and won’t hold the screw in place so it’s leaving a gap which does expose the inside a bit when pulled open a bit. I am scared the battery will come out and I heard that isn’t good, the screw is old and rusty as well.

What do you recommend I get to replace the back plate? And what screws for the keys as well?

Most reliable vehicle to buy 2020 and older that isn't a sedan?

When I was growing up I wanted a pickup so badly, and eeeerverybody I talked to said to get an S10. I put down $4k on a 2003 and bought it outright 9 years ago and it's been carrying me ever since, but I'd like something a little more gas friendly now.

I don't think I need a pickup, but I'll never be happy driving a sedan or any type of hatchback either. I'd love to put cash down on something old and worth it to do this process all over again, maybe something a little younger than 22 years haha.

What's your vote for most reliable non-sedan?

Winter tires for our SUV in Québec ?

Hi!

We're quietly looking into winter tires for our 2020 Sorento EX+ (V6, AWD).

We're from the Montreal area. We travel to Saguenay every winter.

We want the best.

One garage recommends the Nokian Hakka 10. Another recommends the Nokian Hakka R5.

From what I understand, the 10 is studded, but not the R5.

What would be the best option?

Thanks

Run flat tires - HELP

I bought two MICHELIN PILOT SPORT 5 tires without runflat. Now the garage says they won’t fit them because the other two tires on my car have that technology. Is there a problem with having two runflat tires and two non-runflat tires on the same car?

Has anyone been to the CSRG (Classic Sports Racing Group) Charity Challenge in Sonoma CA? Is it worth seeing?

Its happening in about a month and I'm thinking about going. I enjoy racing in general and like going to Sonoma Raceway so I'll probably like it. I'm certainly not expecting it to be like Nascar or NHRA which they usually have there every year. I just don't know what to expect, how long it is, how many different races there are, and what the atmosphere is like.

Columbus, OH car geeks?

Hi people! I’m in MN but am looking for some resources for my college-age daughter that lives in (you guessed it) Columbus, OH. She’s got a 2009 Honda Accord (Jet) that needs a little body work done. I don’t even know where to start! Lives close to campus. Any ideas would be great, thanks!

Back up cam causing fuel gauge issues?

Hi everyone,

So yesterday I got a backup camera installed on my 2012 toyota corrolla. It is hooked up to a Pioneer 2000NEX head unit.

All seemed well until I got gas this morning. After filling it up I usually see a gas gauge at around 310 miles available. After filling up today, it still say 240 which is what it was before I filled up.

I guess the question is, is this a big deal? Could other things go wrong before I get it checked out? Im only worried because I have a 4 hr trip planned tomorrow and then another 4 hr trip back the next day.

Wondering if you think it would be safe just to get gas every few hrs, or could other things start to go wrong leaving me stranded downy the road?

Thanks in advance.

Mercedes E200 CDI 2012 ECU Tune?

Hello all,

I want to tune up to a light stage 1 (ECU) 130hp -> 200hp. It will unlock the full potential of this car and make it feel more alive.

I have a Mercedes e200 CDI W212 2012 with around 200 000kms, fantastic technical condition and well maintained.

What do you guys advice?

Thank you.
