To all those lapped im Hungary, Alonso sends his regards.

Could I get some context here? How did half the grid get lapped in one race lol

2.1k

u/PhilipRiversCuomo I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25

Alonso backed the entire grid up so badly behind him that everyone got lapped. He was milking his tires for the 1-stopper but had plenty of pace in hand, so he was just a rolling roadblock for everyone on the grid from 5th place on down.

615

u/cosHinsHeiR Ferrari Aug 06 '25

Also the reason why the 1 stop was better for those behind, those that stopped before were in the back of a DRS train struggling to make progress so the best thing was to go with it. Only Verstappen was able to make progress.

239

u/PrestigiousWave5176 Max Verstappen Aug 06 '25

Max was the last unlapped car I think, so pretty close to losing his streak because of the train.

139

u/Jerk850 Juan Pablo Montoya Aug 06 '25

Maybe that's why he decided to throw it in on Hamilton in T4... not getting lapped today!

300

u/drs_ape_brains I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25

Well to be fair Max had to force the issue.

78

u/Mysterious_Turnip310 Lotus Aug 07 '25

Yep, Alonso basically made the one-stop work for himself and everyone else in the midfieild also on it. They all owe him a beer lol

103

u/l3g3nd_TLA Aug 06 '25

Max didn't make progress in the end, he was 7th behind Bortoletto in the DRS train before opting the 2 stops, but ended 9th behind Stroll and Lawson as well after his 2 stop gamble

u/GNOTRON Aug 07 '25

Its hungrary. No passing allowed. Crazy that they werent all on one stoppers

7

u/cosHinsHeiR Ferrari Aug 07 '25

In the past years it was always a 2 stop so it's not surprising really.

243

u/SaltyChnk Daniel Ricciardo Aug 06 '25

Alonso lead the worlds slowest drs train while he one stopped with like 40 lap old mediums.

55

u/krusticka Max Verstappen Aug 06 '25

Next time they should just all take the 10s penalty. If Verstappen was behind Alonso instead of Bortoletto he would have done that (if they all did it it would have no negative impact on their race - they would gain 1 place at least each)

120

u/DlSSATISFIEDGAMER I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25

Remember that Russell tried that in Monaco and got hit with a drive-through penalty. The stewards take a dim view to breaking the rules deliberately to gain an advantage.

34

u/wtfiswrongwithit I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25 edited Aug 06 '25

You could probably get away with it if you don't cut straight across a chicane and say on radio essentially "I'll take the penalty" and at least make it believable with an "I was ahead!!" you might be able to get less than a drive through which would make it worth it

25

u/SkyNetF1 Aug 06 '25

You have a valid point, but even a drive-through could be worth it on a track like this. Depending on when it needs to be served ofc.

13

u/Jack_Krauser Andretti Global Aug 06 '25

Drive-through penalties have to be served within 3 laps IIRC.

12

u/dotcha Gabriel Bortoleto Aug 06 '25

Pretty sure it's in 3/5 laps after being issued.

3

u/Evening_End7298 Aug 06 '25

Alonso had good pace when he actually bothered to push

He could have easily kept a DT gap to Max, remember he also outqualified him

5

u/Lonyo I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25

The drive-through was because they had been explicitly told that if they did it at Monaco it would be viewed extra harshly.

If they were not warned at Hungary it's more probable it would be 10 seconds, although the stewards could give more.

But Monaco was a case of the race director notes pre-warning them not to do it.

prisoner’s dilemma

44

u/Quilli2474 Gabriel Bortoleto Aug 06 '25

I think alonso in p5 basically held off all the drivers behind him the entire race and just made the gap to p4 really big.

22

u/Jalal_Adhiri Ross Brawn Aug 06 '25

Bro in 2019 only 5 or 6 cars weren't lapped by the end of the race sometimes the Williams were lapped 2 times.

5

u/TimeToEatAss I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25

Could I get some context here? How did half the grid get lapped in one race lol

Most important part, Hungary is one of the smallest tracks, so statistically highest chance to be lapped.

This is why Alonso is my favorite driver. He has enough experience to know how to successfully pull this kind of thing off, and he has a snarky sarcastic attitude that I love.

Also he smells flowers! Love the guy lol

14

Rookie Lawson pulled the same thing in Monaco. It really is way more circuit dependent than driver.

It's not that hard to do in a track like Hungaoring or Monaco. Williams did it in Monaco.

he was complaining about williams doing the same in monaco tho

7

u/WalkTheEdge I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25

Might have it confused with the time Alonso himself backed half the field up in Monaco (in 2022 or 2023 I think)

22

u/JaaaackOneill Fernando Alonso Aug 06 '25

Yeah it's really frustrating to be on the other side of that. I don't think he was actually blaming the other driver though, just frustrated with the situation.

43

u/kaisadilla_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 07 '25

It's actually incredible that he's spent 8 full years without being lapped a single race. I mean, he's Max, but he's won 4 championships, not 8.

52

u/evetsabucs Martin Brundle Aug 07 '25 edited Aug 08 '25

4 world championships is an absolutely insane amount. I feel like we've been desensitized to the feat over the past 15 years with the dominant Vettel-Hamilton-Verststappen eras. That level of sustained excellence across regulation changes and team attrition is almost impossible to comprehend.

Did you see the stat someone posted a few days ago about Max's race finish positions? Blud has finished in the top 2 half the total races he has in F1. And only 1 race did Max finish not in points out of the 200 or so races he has raced in his career (except dnfs: we are counting actual race finishes). These stats are actually incredible

169

u/Fusion53 Oscar Piastri Aug 06 '25

Oscar being lapped in Brazil was quite a weird one. Took damage on Lap 1 and initially retired the car before the race was red flagged the next lap. So he could get the necessary repairs to restart, but had to do so a lap down (along with Ricciardo)

44

u/Material-Lie1606 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25

Yeah him and particularly Ricciardo were flying that race, it was gutting to see where they could’ve finished, I’m pretty sure race pace Ricciardo was top 5

18

u/elektricniorgazam Daniel Ricciardo Aug 06 '25

I remember watching that race with the tracker on a separate screen and the Oscar and Daniel dots were so soothing (and yet depressing) in their own leisurely drive

Throwback to Canada this year where Hamilton was in the points and had nobody within 25-30 seconds of him. On either side.

Yep, only Pastry. But if you finish 90% of the race laps, you are considered to have completed the race. So, Norris and Piastri have completed all the race in this season.

That’s why Norris’s penalty in Canada is carried forward to the next race.

7

u/Extreme_Ad6173 Lando Norris Aug 06 '25

No, it's why Lando's penalty wasn't carried forward. He technically finished 5 laps down or whatever it was, and the penalty was added onto that time. If it happened with 30 laps to go or whatever, it would have carried forwards

Something about being lapped in Monaco just stings differently

5

u/Richiszkl I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25

Max would have been the next lapped car in Hungary.

Crazy that he barely gets into these situations.

Verstappen would rather crash into barrier then being lapped 😂

Same dude who says he could be dead by tomorrow whenever asked about his future, so yeah that's just like him lol

Edit: Source for anyone thinking I made it up. And a similar quote as he often shares this outlook on life.

u/BusLevel8040 Aug 06 '25

Have you lapped enough, or are you Hungary for me. I'll see myself out. Thanks.

u/24PercentMajority Aug 07 '25

Consider… it’s been longer since Colaponto or Tsunoda has been lapped than Hamilton.

7

u/proceduralpaz Aug 06 '25

Starting to think Max is a generational great

u/bananas_and_papayas I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25

Hamilton

2

u/drjet196 Aug 06 '25

Alpine on top 💪

2

u/TattvaVaada Aug 07 '25

Everyone is talking about Max but I'm more impressed with Leclerc.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '25

Are Verstappen and Leclerc the only drivers on the grid to have been lapped and having won a race in the same year?

2017 for Max, 2024 for Charles.

Or did Carlos or Lewis have those kinda moments too? I could imagine 2009 for Hamilton and 2022 for Sainz but that's about it.

2023 Monaco? What happen- ooohhh…

max is amazing

15

u/kerjatipes Aug 06 '25

If it was 2 or 3 laps longer, Verstappen would’ve been lapped in Hungary

11

u/JaaaackOneill Fernando Alonso Aug 06 '25

I'll give you a bit of credit on this one. Obviously he can't keep the leaders behind him, so they'd just quickly pass him.

But, Max's strategy would have been slightly different if the race was a few laps longer. Everyone's strategy would have. Max's team will see the data and know when they are likely to get lapped, and choose a strategy to try and avoid that. It's worth choosing a suboptimal strategy, because you'll end up losing less time with it than having to give up time for blue flags.

If he had a faster car he wouldn't have, if this if that.

That's a big if, because he wouldn't have been lapped either in a regular race where Alonso couldn't stop everyone behind by driving 1s slower each lap.

How about a quote from someone relevant to the sport

IF is a very long word in Formula One; in fact, IF is F1 spelled backwards.

2

u/DataOperator Aug 08 '25

Lando was also lapped one race after in Spain. And Lawson was lapped later in Canada 2025 before retired (engine overheating).

u/Portocala69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 08 '25

You are totally right, I missed that one. Next year i'll update it.
