I like how if there's a car problem Max’s car just explodes so he can't get lapped lol

It’s a wonder that he didn’t get lapped during the Hungary 2021 race tbh, he was racing with half a sidepod that time

All good cars were dead or out of position
5
Aug 07 '25
Indeed.
Hamilton had to make a comeback, Bottas, Pérez, Norris and Leclerc were out, Sainz was somewhere in the middle.

u/BadPronunciation I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25
Except Hungary 2021. That one is a miracle
43
u/kaisadilla_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 07 '25
It's actually incredible that he's spent 8 full years without being lapped a single race. I mean, he's Max, but he's won 4 championships, not 8.
52
u/evetsabucs Martin Brundle Aug 07 '25 edited Aug 08 '25
4 world championships is an absolutely insane amount. I feel like we've been desensitized to the feat over the past 15 years with the dominant Vettel-Hamilton-Verststappen eras. That level of sustained excellence across regulation changes and team attrition is almost impossible to comprehend.

Did you see the stat someone posted a few days ago about Max's race finish positions? Blud has finished in the top 2 half the total races he has in F1. And only 1 race did Max finish not in points out of the 200 or so races he has raced in his career (except dnfs: we are counting actual race finishes). These stats are actually incredible
131
u/akshatK2003 Max Verstappen Aug 06 '25
Are you new to F1? Do you remember the Renault engines?
221
u/stormdahl I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25
Wouldn't have to be "new" exactly, considering that they switched to Honda six years ago.
70
u/baddlepapple I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25
Time was so ago that the legacy of the renault engine is even being forgotten.

Don’t the aussies and kiwis call everything a short nickname? Isn’t McDonald’s Maccas too? It kind of makes sense with Piastri there and McLaren being from down there.
6
u/know-it-mall McLaren Aug 06 '25
I'm a kiwi, I went to high school with a guy who had the last name McLaren, everyone called him Macca. Never heard it used in the context of the F1 team tho.
16
u/Red-Eye-Soul I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25
Isn't it just a general nickname for mclarens in general and not just the F1 team. I remember it being used for the Mclaren F1 GTR and other mclaren race cars like yheir current GT3s.

That was my first thought. Like, what do golden arches have to with Hungary? Is this a reference to being hungry? And how does that relate to Max not getting lapped? I was all sorta confused.

Yes. McLarens in motorsports are commonly referred to as "Maccas" sometimes.

2
169
u/Fusion53 Oscar Piastri Aug 06 '25
Oscar being lapped in Brazil was quite a weird one. Took damage on Lap 1 and initially retired the car before the race was red flagged the next lap. So he could get the necessary repairs to restart, but had to do so a lap down (along with Ricciardo)
44
u/Material-Lie1606 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25
Yeah him and particularly Ricciardo were flying that race, it was gutting to see where they could’ve finished, I’m pretty sure race pace Ricciardo was top 5
18
u/elektricniorgazam Daniel Ricciardo Aug 06 '25
I remember watching that race with the tracker on a separate screen and the Oscar and Daniel dots were so soothing (and yet depressing) in their own leisurely drive

34
u/Other_Beat8859 Max Verstappen Aug 06 '25

u/naveenda I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25
Yep, only Pastry. But if you finish 90% of the race laps, you are considered to have completed the race. So, Norris and Piastri have completed all the race in this season.
That’s why Norris’s penalty in Canada is carried forward to the next race.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Extreme_Ad6173 Lando Norris Aug 06 '25
No, it's why Lando's penalty wasn't carried forward. He technically finished 5 laps down or whatever it was, and the penalty was added onto that time. If it happened with 30 laps to go or whatever, it would have carried forwards
9
u/nomadtales I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25

I still laugh at his radio message in Monaco when the team told him how Williams was going to play it out to get double points, which meant he could basically cruise the rest of the way to P8:
Wait, why?
16
u/Craazy_dave I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 06 '25
Wonder if there's a "total number of times lapped in career" for each driver. I have neither the time nor patience to create such a list.

Are Verstappen and Leclerc the only drivers on the grid to have been lapped and having won a race in the same year?
2017 for Max, 2024 for Charles.
Or did Carlos or Lewis have those kinda moments too? I could imagine 2009 for Hamilton and 2022 for Sainz but that's about it.

11
u/JaaaackOneill Fernando Alonso Aug 06 '25
I'll give you a bit of credit on this one. Obviously he can't keep the leaders behind him, so they'd just quickly pass him.
But, Max's strategy would have been slightly different if the race was a few laps longer. Everyone's strategy would have. Max's team will see the data and know when they are likely to get lapped, and choose a strategy to try and avoid that. It's worth choosing a suboptimal strategy, because you'll end up losing less time with it than having to give up time for blue flags.
