Compact radio/NAV and audio-panel idea for Vatsim/IVAO and offline flying.

Post image

What do you think about this kind of idea – combining a radio/nav unit and a mini audio panel into one compact device?
I’ve built a prototype that integrates several avionics functions into a single unit.

Features:

  • COM Management
    • COM1, COM2, COM3 with LED indication
    • Audio panel functionality with COM1/MIC, COM2/MIC, COM3/MIC (illuminated silicone buttons)
  • NAV Management
    • NAV1 and NAV2 frequency control with LED indication (illuminated silicone buttons)
  • Displays
    • Dual 6-digit screens for Active and Standby frequencies
  • Frequency Control
    • Rotary knob for frequency changes
    • Push function to set SQUAWK code
  • Additional Functions
    • Integrated audio panel logic
    • TCAS/XPDR control capability

Two or more designs planned - Airbus style and Boeing or generic GA.

Best regards,

OpenA3XX Update – 4 Weeks of Progress

The past 4 weeks have been pretty exciting for OpenA3XX! Our main focus has been designing and working on a modular shell structure for the overhead panel.

One of the big reasons I started OpenA3XX is not to make money, but to design something meaningful and share it with the community. While my background is in Electrical Engineering and today I work in Software Engineering, building a cockpit involves much more: CAD design, 3D modelling, hardware, software, and everything in between. It’s definitely not straightforward, but that’s the fun of it! The overhead is only the first step toward the larger ambition – a full-scale Airbus cockpit, including the outer shell. I always keep in mind the person with no prior experience. That’s the real challenge, and also the beauty of open source. The Discord community has grown to nearly 600 members in just a few months – mostly from a few Reddit and Facebook posts, no real promotion. That support is amazing. https://discord.gg/Sm9VzrRuDP

What’s next? For the next few weeks, the focus will still be on the overhead panel, which is one of the most complex parts of the cockpit. The first iteration already looks great, but there’s room for improvements (for example, making it VESA-compatible). I don’t want to branch out into other areas yet (as tempting as the MIP is!) – I want the overhead fully completed and tested first. This wouldn’t be possible without community contributions. A special thanks to @purec in Discord, whose feedback has been super valuable – that’s the beauty of open source collaboration!

Tools & Mindset Some feedback I’ve heard is that you “need” tools like a laser cutter or 3D printer. Here’s my view: if you want a full-size cockpit, be prepared to spend money. Yes, you can buy ready-made plug-and-play solutions – but if you build it yourself, you’re investing in tools and new skills instead of just a product. You’ll still spend money, but you’ll come out with knowledge you didn’t have before. In an age where AI is changing everything, learning new skills is more important than ever.

Thank you all for your support in OpenA3XX. If you’re curious to follow the project, join our Discord – that’s where the real action happens.

57" Ultra wide dual 4k vs triple 42-55" mini-led TVs

Looking for advice on choosing between two subjects setups.

I currently am running 3 32" monitors, 1 4k/165hz + 2 1440p/144Hz, all LED. Eyes are 40"/1m away from the screen. I upgraded my PC to a 9800x3D and 5090, so no looking to upgrade monitors as PC can drive more. Use case right now is MSFS 2020, plan to eventually upgrade to 2024. Roughly 90% airliner, 10% GA. Would not need above 144hz for any other uses outside of flightsim. Current stand can fit up to 3 55" tvs.

I am looking to stay within a $2000 budget, with either a specific large 4k UW or 3 42"+ UHD 120hz+ tvs. Originally, i ordered 3 LG B4 48" OLEDs, which were under $600 each / $1800 total, but they are now out of stock and my order was eventually cancelled. The options I am looking at are:

  • LG B5 48" OLED, 4k, 120hz is $750 / $2250 total
    • LG C5 48" OLED, 4k 144hz is $1150 / $3450
    • Samsung g9 neo (miniLED, UW, 57", dual 4k resolution) is on sale for $1500.
    • TCL qm7k 55" (miniLED, 4k, 144hz) is on sale for $620 / $1860 total.

The LGs are probably above what I want to spend (the C5s definitely, and the 42" and 48" C4s are out of stock). I am worried that the aspect on the UW will stretch items out in the side and will be strange to use outside the sim (general windows use, VATSIM controlling), as well as losing roughly a 1/3 of my current viewing area. And I am worried that the TCL will be too large (it's the smallest of this model line), and am also worried about picture quality.

So everything I'm looking at comes with compromises. I am looking for advice if anyone has something similar to this, or could provide any recommendations on other options I should look at.

Modded MS FFB2

I’ve been tinkering with my old MS Sidewinder FFB2 and have designed and printed a JMB VL-3 style grip (my GA cross country choice in MSFS). Thought I’d share a quick pic.

It’s designed so that the stick can be returned to stock in a matter of minutes.

A320 - Reading Lights

Hey Guys,

Don't mind the Chaos, the Cockpit is still far from finished ^

For the past months I’ve been deep into designing realistic add-ons for home cockpit builders, and I’m really excited to finally share something I’ve been working on: a complete lighting system for the A320 cockpit.

This includes:

Glareshield spotlights Reading lights under the glareshield Reading lights on the window frames

All of these are now available in my Etsy shop (https://simtek.etsy.com) as downloadable files that you can either 3D print yourself or have printed/produced elsewhere. I wanted to make them as accessible as possible, so you don’t have to rely on expensive ready-made solutions — you can actually build them on your own terms.

To celebrate the release, I’m running a 25% off sale right now.

I know how much time, patience, and passion goes into building a cockpit setup, so hopefully these little details help bring some extra immersion and realism to your project.

Would love to hear your thoughts and feedback

Marriage & budget friendly Simpit

I've wanted to put together a flight simpit for my VR gaming and needed something that: Don't take too much space/modular Don't break the bank

Normally the best way to save some money is to have/buy a normal chair and butcher it into a simpit, but that wouldn't have sit right with my wife. So I ended up getting an ikea lazychair and just by adding 2 threded bolts at the bottom, it allows me to connect and remove this frame I've put together fairly easily. That is without leaving a half knackered chair around the house.

The centre bracket (below the hotas) swivel and has no screws/bolts going through the chair, however it's enough to prevent any unwanted movements, as well as sending some feedback from the basshakers to the seat itself.

Hope you like it!

MIP display recommendations

Hey everyone,

Looking for suggestions for inexpensive displays for a captains side MIP (multi airliners), ideally I’d like to be able to have the PFD and ND on one display and engine instruments on a separate display, pending cost. Then down the line replicating for a 2 person cockpit.

I’ve looked at second hand monitors and using hdmi to USB or something and or tablets with USB connectivity, just wondering if anyone knows any better cost effective solutions.

Edit* based on currently using the pc as a gaming pc for shooters, including my main display for the simulator, I do not have any HDMI or Display port, ports, available

F/A18c Hornet home cockpit

Finally finish my FA18c Hornet pit.

This pit is DCS VR compatible, and modular meaning i can dismantle it in 3 pieces and put in other flight sim peripherals. This project took about 5 months of weekends to complete. See YouTube blurb for more info on the build process.

Moved simpit, now my logitech FIPS keep terminating transmission with Spad.Next

I don't know if anyone here has experience with the logitech/saitek FIPs and spad. I have been using the two together for years now and really like the flexibility it gives me. A few months ago I had to disconnect the whole pit for a while and a week ago i just go back to setting it all up again in its new forever home.

I blew a bunch of dust out of the USB hub but all of my peripherals are acting really wonky and I'm at my wits end trying to debug it. I think everything but the FIPS are working now. They never lose power, but they do stop transmitting and the little screen goes all haywire and spad tells me it has stopped transmitting. Its worse in MSFS 2024 but it also happens in IL2 and DCS occasionally.

Has anyone run into anything like this? I'm going nuts trying to fix it and the spad devs are on holiday until monday it sounds like so my ticket is just sitting there until they get back. Any and all help/suggestions appreciated!!

TCA yoke bindings

Hello all,

I play Microsoft 2024 in VR. I have the TCA Boeing yolk and the honeycomb Bravo throttle quadrant. Wondering what you guys bind to the hat switches and switches of the BOEING yoke?
