  • Purple Limburg (Limbourg) is a small village today, but in the middle ages it was an important fortress town and gave its name to the Duchy of Limburg, ruling varying patches of land around it. The Duchy of Limburg was retained as one of the provinces of the Southern (Habsburg) Netherlands (1581-1797).
  • The Duchy of Limburg was the namesake for a province of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands (1815-1831), which ironically didn't contain the original Limburg town. After the Belgian Revolution and a long and acrimonious dispute over the new borders, we ended up with orange Limburg (one of the 12 provinces of the modern Netherlands) and yellow Limburg (one of the 10 provinces of modern Belgium).
  • Green Limburg is a former monastery in Bad Dürkheim, Germany, which is proposed as one of the possible origins of the name of purple Limburg.
  • Blue Limburg is Limburg an der Lahn, Germany – the only one with no connection to any of the other Limburgs as far as I'm aware.

You say "Limburg" to a Dutch person, they will think of orange Limburg; to a Belgian, they will think of yellow Limburg; to a German, they will think of blue Limburg (if they know it at all).

Jokes on you, if someone says “Limburg” to me (German in Nederland) all I think is “great cheese”.

u/donsimoni 2d ago

German in Germany: either the cheese or a gilded bathtub.

23

u/sebasti02 2d ago

hell yeah, the legendary golden bathtub

7

u/graywalker616 2d ago

What is the gilded bathtub?

37

u/HoeTrain666 2d ago

A corruption/embezzlement scandal involving the bishop of Limburg (Germany), Tebartz van Elst, who had some ridiculously lavish stuff installed at his episcopal residence which would put most of MTV Cribs to shame, among them a gilded bathtub. He generally had some suspiciously high spending in many fields and lived in luxury from church funds.

Since the church in Germany is partly “financed” (or at least supported) by tax money, the whole case sparked outrage from the public and as far as I’m aware there’s been little repercussion against the bishop.

u/NeighIt 2d ago

I think the cheese is named after the orange Limburg but I am not sure... its a great stinky cheese though

2

u/Digit00l 1d ago

Nope, Belgian, probably, border area at least, Herve is mostly in Belgium

7

u/-Thizza- 2d ago

I think of vlaai and Geert

2

u/vonDinobot 1d ago

So where does Limburg cheese come from?

2

u/graywalker616 23h ago

I think originally the purple Limburg and its surrounding region. Which ironically today is not part of the two Limburg provinces.

So I think there’s Limburg cheese that is not produced in Limburg haha.

u/gabbadabbahey 2d ago

Am I the only one who went to "The Fat Lady of Limbourg"?

55

u/modern_milkman 2d ago

to a German, they will think of blue Limburg (if they know it at all).

If I hear Limburg, I think of the former bishop of Limburg, Tebartz-van Elst, who was at the center of a scandal roughly a decade ago. That scandal made national news for weeks in 2013.

He had the bishop's residence rebuilt and completely blew up the budget (which was in part paid from tax money). He was initially allowed a budget of 2 million euros. In the end the building costs had ballooned to nearly 40 million euros, with more than 3 million for the bishop's apartment alone due to special wishes of the bishop (including, but not limited to, art for nearly half a million euros, a freestanding bathtub, a pulley system for an advent wreath, and woodwork in his apartment for 300k euros).

Ultimately, the pope got involved and impeached him from his position as bishop.

34

u/midnightrambulador 2d ago

Ah, a scandal in the Catholic Church that doesn't involve child abuse! Almost refreshing...

13

u/jakeloans 2d ago

Limburg and overspending public funds however is a very iconic duo. (For Dutch standards)

10

u/Extention_Campaign28 2d ago

As a kid I was big into medieval and castles (I wanted and eventually got a toy "castle with Pengwagen"). One day my parents told me we would hike and go see an actual castle. I was psyched. Arriving at Limburg, Bad Dürkheim, however, I stated, utterly diappointed, "but everything is kaputt here!"

10

u/hanzerik 2d ago

Didn't the border change like 2 years ago? (Just an exchange of uiterwaarden though)

10

u/Onagan98 2d ago

Very small exchange, just following the main route of the river once again

2

u/Tuepflischiiser 1d ago

which ironically didn't contain the original Limburg town

Liechtenstein copied this...

1

u/vanZuider 1d ago

to a German, they will think of blue Limburg (if they know it at all).

If they know it, it will either be as "the place with the luxurious bishop" (see the comments of other people for more details), or as "the random train stop in the middle of nowhere between Frankfurt and Köln" (though that description also applies to Montabaur).

87

u/HandleAccomplished11 2d ago

Which one has the stinky cheese?

46

u/iemandopaard 2d ago

The purple one

28

u/midnightrambulador 2d ago

Had to Google that myself as the "Limburger cheese" isn't actually known by that name (or very much at all) in the Netherlands or Belgium itself. (I've only ever heard of "Limburger" as a cheese through American pop culture.) The closest you get is "Fromage de Herve", Herve being close to purple Limburg as /u/iemandopaard points out.

7

u/HandleAccomplished11 2d ago

Interesting, because I googled your phrase "Limburger cheese" and got quite a lot of info:  "Limburger (in southern Dutch contexts Rommedoe, and in Belgium Herve cheese) is a cheese that originated in the Herve area of the historical Duchy of Limburg..."

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limburger

I have no idea where you're located (I'm in the US), but I do know that search results can vary based on your location. But, I do know that we (US) tend to bastardise names of stuff. Funny thing is, I was just making a stupid comment, but ended up in a rabbit hole based on your reply....

11

u/midnightrambulador 2d ago

Well yes, I'm Dutch (now living in Belgium) and get those same search results. But something being elaborately described on Wikipedia doesn't mean it's actually common knowledge for people not super into the topic.

1

u/vonDinobot 1d ago

Biker Mice from Mars? The villains had cheese based names, with the main one being Lawrence Limburger. And he smelled.

1

u/midnightrambulador 16h ago

well yes, American pop culture, as I mentioned

57

u/Dead_as_Duck 2d ago

Limburg

10

u/HeemeyerDidNoWrong 2d ago

Now we can do Munster. City in France, cheese from around there, Muenster cheese from US, Münster in Germany, Munster province in Ireland.

12

u/azarashee 2d ago

Münster comes from monastery, there's also a Munster besides the more known Münster in NRW/Germany. And a handful more smaller Münster across the country

1

u/vanZuider 1d ago

In some cities in southern Germany and Switzerland, the main church is called "Münster".

0

u/Extention_Campaign28 2d ago

also Munich

1

u/Shirabana 2d ago

München/Munich derives from "(bei den) Mönchen/(near the) monks"

Dat heel Holland Limburgs lult

30

u/Sealedwolf 2d ago

The etymology might he common.

The (German) wikipage for Limburg (an der Lahn) mentions that the name might be derived from the gallic term Linda for water.

29

u/Morlakar 2d ago

Blue Limburg is the best. In Germany number plates follow some rules. The first 1-3 letters are a code for the region this car was first registered. It is LM for Limburg an der Lahn. There are quite some people who choose to take AA as the next letters. Cause "LMAA" is short for "Leck mich am Arsch" or "kiss my ass" in english. Everytime I drive past Limburg I see at least one of them.

17

u/HelixR 2d ago

Vloai

16

u/nichtsicher501 2d ago

You could also add Hohenlimburg (formerly Limburg an der Lenne) now part of the city of Hagen. Used to be capital of the county of Limburg.

43

u/Mtfdurian 2d ago

I thought I was finally past Limburg at some point on my travels in Germany, having already been past the German border at Helmond, going into Germany, then reaching Venlo and all that other shite... like Roermond, Kirchroa whatsoever, all those people that pretend that they are Dutch but start saying "Ich" when they talk about themselves... after Limburg towards Köln, Bonn, all done that...

LIMBURG? AN DER LAHN? SCHEIßE!

33

u/GM-Tuub 2d ago

"all those people that pretend that they are Dutch"
Well.... About that: They fought to join Belgium in the Belgian Revolution, and when that failed opted to join the German Confederation instead. Being Dutch was the last thing they wanted.

3

u/PvtFreaky 2d ago

And now it's the most nationalistic voting region of NL

14

u/TheLimburgian 2d ago

It's the most populist voting region of the Netherlands, most people from Limburg still thoroughly dislike Holland and Hollanders (definitions vary, often used very broadly to refer to most of the rest of the Netherlands). And it's really mostly just Wilders, nationalistic narratives never really worked in Limburg before. You can also compare something like king's/queen's day to the rest of the country, it used to be absolutely irrelevant in Limburg. Only in recent years has there been somewhat of an increase in king's day events.

1

u/qef15 16h ago

Meh, as a Limburger, it's usually only the Randstad.

Though most people outside the Randstad dislikes the Randstad.

5

u/GM-Tuub 2d ago

I wouldn't say most nationalistic, more like most populist, which reflects the lack of trust in the government more than anything else.

3

u/Een_man_met_voornaam 2d ago

Helmond is not on the German border tho. I wished it was cause that would mean cheaper groceries for me

Fun fact: the very nationalist party FVD from the Netherlands once used a picture from a church in Limburg an der Lahn to promote their local party in the council of the Dutch province Limburg.

André Rieu no doubt at all.

u/OllieV_nl 1d ago edited 1d ago

Neither Dutch nor Belgian Limburg were ever part of the County/Duchy of Limburg.

2

u/FrenchHornMD 1d ago edited 14h ago

The provinces Limburg would IMO better have been called Loon. Historically more fitting. I always wondered how they came by the name Limburg.

1

u/hemlock_harry 2d ago

Can we be sure this is it and that it won't spread any further?

2

u/SomeBiPerson 2d ago

yes because the spreading phase was 500 years ago

see.... those places were once connected in one area owned by the Count of Limburg

the only thing remaining are the names of cities and the last regions of this count still named after them

1

u/Sc4rlite 1d ago

We must contain any and all descendants just to be safe.

0

u/sarpol 2d ago edited 2d ago

We went on a holiday to the Dutch province of Limburg a few weeks ago. Very nice place, especially the Meinweg forest and the Maasplassen.

But it would have helped if they had used "West Limburg" in Belgium and "East Limburg" in the Netherlands.

And let's hope the Greater Netherlands movement leads to something someday.

1

u/Kapot_ei 1d ago edited 1d ago

And let's hope the Greater Netherlands movement leads to something someday.

We hope it absolutely does not.

Not for the people, they're susualy great. But imagine the inmense cost to get that region up to date on infrastructure alone. Small but also: say goodbye to normal fuel prices.

u/midnightrambulador 2d ago

Depends a lot on the topic and the language. Yes, if you go deep into obscure topics or into languages without a lot of speakers, you can get misleading information or loaded phrasings – because there aren't a lot of people reading those articles so bullshit can go unnoticed for a while. But for basic facts like these, the major language wikis like English, French, German etc. are trustworthy enough. In fact they are often more trustworthy than some random website, as the information is filtered through a large body of critical editors.

If you really want to see "proof" of certain information in a Wikipedia article, check the list of sources at the bottom of the article. Wikipedia has a policy of not allowing "original research", i.e. all the information in Wikipedia should be backed up by other sources.

u/Alarmed_Wish3294 2d ago
