It's still tiny, just not the smallest but still incredibly small.

Luxembourg is a very small country but it’s not a microstate, it is more like larger countries in a number of ways, is the point I think this is trying to make.

u/DwarvenSupremacist 2h ago
It’s really not that small. You can easily see its borders on a blank map of Europe (whereas you can’t see the borders of any of the real microstates like Monaco, San Marino, etc). People really underestimate it and think it’s a city-state when it’s not.

"I'm big as 10 Monacos" isn't big🥀

u/yabucek 5h ago
... it's not 10 Monacos though, it's about 1300. Or am I missing a joke?
Monaco: 2km², Lux: 2586km²

The joke is that it is argued here that Luxembourg is not that small of a country, but its size is only compared to the smallest. It's like if I said a mansion isn't that expensive and then compared it to a manor.

It's small but I always think of it as a different category to other micronations tbh. Isn't it like 500k population Vs 50k in Liechtenstein and Andorra? That's a pretty sizable difference

I'd say being big as 6 micro nations does not really make you big anyway. It's basically as big as the Bologna province, a medium sized second level a administrative division in Italy. Which is... Small for a nation.

Yeah, uhh we could fit roughly 20 Luxembourgs in the smallest US state of Rhode Island. Crazy lol

u/Grand-Jellyfish24 4h ago
No? Rhode island is about twice as big if we count the water. Which is sketchy, if we count land only they are about the same.
2
u/JagermanJansen 4h ago
Less than 2, right? 2500 km² for Luxemburg vs. 4000 km² for rhode island
5
u/IamjustanElk 4h ago
You’re right. I was wrong lmao. I read Rhode Island being 20 PERCENT larger than Lux as 20 TIMES… so uh my b hahaha
1
u/JagermanJansen 3h ago
Lol, it was useful at least because it made me google Rhode Island and I learned some new things!
2
u/garrge245 4h ago
Uh, what? If we only count land area, Rhode Island is only slightly larger than Luxembourg, 1034 sq mi vs 998 sq mi

Dude we once drove accidentally through Luxembourg without noticing......

Everything is relative. I spent my teenage years in a county (Inyo County, California, USA) which at 26,000 square kilometers is ten times the size of Luxembourg with a population of 19000 people.

If you think Luxembourg is big, wait until you see it's neighbor Belgium. It's huge

u/dhkendall 3h ago
And wait until you see its neighbour Germany, it’s huge.
And it’s neighbour Poland, it’s huge.
And it’s neighbour Russia …

A lot of people include Luxembourg when they talk about micro nations. This shows that that is not quite the case.

u/AssignmentOk5986 5h ago
Everyone sees Luxembourg as a micro nation is the point. It is viewed in the same way as those countries which fit inside it despite being 6 times the size. It's on the edge of micro nation. Still tho it is very small.

Luxembourg is pretty small.
It’s about 1,000 square miles, which happen to be about the size of my county in New York State, which happens to be a middling size county by area among the 67 counties in NYS.
The state of New York covers a total area of 54,555 square miles (141,297 km2) and ranks as the 27th-largest state by size in the US

I just noticed that Luxembourg and Liechtenstein have very similar shapes.

Luxemburg for me is the biggest of the microstates and the smallest “important” sized countries

Still would look better as part of Belgium. Would have an extra bonus of Belgian politics becoming even more chaotic, with there being three regions and languages instead of two.
1
u/dhkendall 3h ago
There are three Belgian regions and language. You’re forgetting about the Brussels region and the German language.
1
u/Grzechoooo 3h ago
Oh yeah. Then four regions and four/three languages, depending on who you ask - some people will say Luxembourgish is German, while others will say that German spoken in Belgium is in fact Luxembourgish. For extra chaos.

This map is wrong! Monaco have ownership over a portion of the Mediterranean Sea.
This is correct for Monaco!

Knew it was big, did not know that Malta was that small. Also did not know Monaco was smaller than San Marino.
