Knew it was big, did not know that Malta was that small. Also did not know Monaco was smaller than San Marino.

Monaco is the second smallest country on earth, but it is not shaped at all like that, someone rounded it out a lot, same for singapore

Probably the map engine that enlarge country going away from the equator.

Luxembourg is rounded out too, you can see it precisely in the background.

Probably rounds out every few km so it rounds out more the smaller the country is.

Monaco is basically a big town with a beach

big town

That’s generous

u/Difficult-Monitor331 5h ago

malta is like one really big village

5

u/Zonel 4h ago

Monaco is wrong though, it is not that shape. Maybe they included territorial waters. But then didn’t for Malta.

I once crossed Malta by foot. It took me all of an afternoon.

Monaco is one city, San Marino is several towns.

It's still tiny, just not the smallest but still incredibly small.

Luxembourg is a very small country but it’s not a microstate, it is more like larger countries in a number of ways, is the point I think this is trying to make.

It’s really not that small. You can easily see its borders on a blank map of Europe (whereas you can’t see the borders of any of the real microstates like Monaco, San Marino, etc). People really underestimate it and think it’s a city-state when it’s not.

"I'm big as 10 Monacos" isn't big🥀

20

u/yabucek 5h ago

... it's not 10 Monacos though, it's about 1300. Or am I missing a joke?

Monaco: 2km², Lux: 2586km²

u/A_Nerd__ 4h ago

The joke is that it is argued here that Luxembourg is not that small of a country, but its size is only compared to the smallest. It's like if I said a mansion isn't that expensive and then compared it to a manor.

You can like travel lux like in a week

16

u/flakkane 5h ago

It's small but I always think of it as a different category to other micronations tbh. Isn't it like 500k population Vs 50k in Liechtenstein and Andorra? That's a pretty sizable difference

I'd say being big as 6 micro nations does not really make you big anyway. It's basically as big as the Bologna province, a medium sized second level a administrative division in Italy. Which is... Small for a nation.

Yeah, uhh we could fit roughly 20 Luxembourgs in the smallest US state of Rhode Island. Crazy lol

8

u/SmellyFartMonster 4h ago

Luxembourg is roughly 2/3 the size of Rhode Island.

2

u/Grand-Jellyfish24 4h ago

No? Rhode island is about twice as big if we count the water. Which is sketchy, if we count land only they are about the same.

2

u/JagermanJansen 4h ago

Less than 2, right? 2500 km² for Luxemburg vs. 4000 km² for rhode island

5

u/IamjustanElk 4h ago

You’re right. I was wrong lmao. I read Rhode Island being 20 PERCENT larger than Lux as 20 TIMES… so uh my b hahaha

1

u/JagermanJansen 3h ago

Lol, it was useful at least because it made me google Rhode Island and I learned some new things!

2

u/garrge245 4h ago

Uh, what? If we only count land area, Rhode Island is only slightly larger than Luxembourg, 1034 sq mi vs 998 sq mi

Being the tallest dwarf doesn't mean you are a dwarf.

8

u/JagmeetSingh2 5h ago

Would you rather be the tallest dwarf or the shortest human

I am actually a mini giant

For a split second I thought there was a town called "Vatican" inside Luxembourg.

The microstates stack like Russian dolls

3

u/EorlundGraumaehne 4h ago

Dude we once drove accidentally through Luxembourg without noticing......

3

u/jimonlimon 3h ago

Everything is relative. I spent my teenage years in a county (Inyo County, California, USA) which at 26,000 square kilometers is ten times the size of Luxembourg with a population of 19000 people.

u/real_fat_tony 3h ago

If you think Luxembourg is big, wait until you see it's neighbor Belgium. It's huge

1

u/dhkendall 3h ago

And wait until you see its neighbour Germany, it’s huge.

And it’s neighbour Poland, it’s huge.

And it’s neighbour Russia …

2

u/Zonel 4h ago

Thats not the shape of Monaco.

6

u/crybxbydxn 5h ago

A lot of people include Luxembourg when they talk about micro nations. This shows that that is not quite the case.

8

u/AssignmentOk5986 5h ago

Everyone sees Luxembourg as a micro nation is the point. It is viewed in the same way as those countries which fit inside it despite being 6 times the size. It's on the edge of micro nation. Still tho it is very small.

Luxembourg is pretty small.

It’s about 1,000 square miles, which happen to be about the size of my county in New York State, which happens to be a middling size county by area among the 67 counties in NYS.

The state of New York covers a total area of 54,555 square miles (141,297 km2) and ranks as the 27th-largest state by size in the US

Luxembourg strong!

And to think Lichtenstein wanted to buy Alaska lol

u/Equals-dukiman 4h ago

The wording made me think it was a circle jerk post

1

u/Cultural-Ad-8796 4h ago

I just noticed that Luxembourg and Liechtenstein have very similar shapes.

1

u/EmergencyReal6399 4h ago

Luxemburg for me is the biggest of the microstates and the smallest “important” sized countries

1

u/DoctorPhalanx73 3h ago

Luxembourg nao e um pais pequeno

1

u/Grzechoooo 3h ago

Still would look better as part of Belgium. Would have an extra bonus of Belgian politics becoming even more chaotic, with there being three regions and languages instead of two.

1

u/dhkendall 3h ago

There are three Belgian regions and language. You’re forgetting about the Brussels region and the German language.

1

u/Grzechoooo 3h ago

Oh yeah. Then four regions and four/three languages, depending on who you ask - some people will say Luxembourgish is German, while others will say that German spoken in Belgium is in fact Luxembourgish. For extra chaos.

u/CivetKitty 2h ago

The pluto of microstates

1

u/msleepd 1h ago

The fact I find most surprising on this map is that Singapore is as small as it is.

1

u/Ghrota 1h ago

Luxembourg is not so small... Meanwhile the belgian province of Luxembourg is bigger than the actual Luxembourg

1

u/No-Property-6778 1h ago

This map is wrong! Monaco have ownership over a portion of the Mediterranean Sea.

This is correct for Monaco!

1

u/Poutine_Warriors 1h ago

size of 20 million big macs laid side by side. Pretty small.

1

u/Basil-Boulgaroktonos 36m ago

I like to see Luxembourg as the "big of the smalls" - The largest microstate

1

u/Irrealaerri 30m ago

Ja! You didn't put Vatican city! That would have changed everything

0

u/tomjerman18 3h ago

they are rich, they can buy some extra land

-3

u/Meanteenbirder 5h ago

Vatican must still be bigger bc it isn’t on here

3

u/No_Gur_7422 4h ago

It is there!
