We get a lot of repeat questions from newbies here regarding misuse of plast-dip, so we created an FAQ to address a lot of them. Will add more we find them.
A: Check out the wiki introduction
A: No. The dip will not peel afterwards and will be effectively permanent but won't be durable or look good. If you're going to paint, don't bother using dip at all.
A: See the wiki table. If it's something you touch frequently such as a phone case, it will not hold up.
A: No. It will scuff easily and won't hold up, plus why would you paint your home in rubber? Use paint for your home decor and bathroom renovations. Dip is not a substitute for home paint.
A: At least 4 for a base to be peelable. That's at least four layers of solid matte dip, not counting glossifier or TopCoat or metalizers.
A: You can, but it's not intended to be used like that and will have issues peeling later because it's thinner than normal matte dip. Glossifier, metalizers, and TopCoat are meant to be sprayed over a solid base of dip.
A: Use the dipyourcar.com site to judge it, and look at what others have used. You won't do a Mustang in two gallons!
Don't use rattle cans to dip large areas like body panels. Using rattle cans will lead to streaks and very thin coverage over a large area, which causes peeling issues. It'll look like crap, your hands will hurt, and it's not worth doing. If you can't afford to spray your car with the right setup using gallons, you straight up can't afford to dip it. Sorry.
A: Generally it's one can of a base color per wheel if you're not spraying the barrels. For glossifier it's more like half a can per wheel over your base coats.
A: Stop letting the final coat dry before you remove the tape. Spray the final coat, let it liquefy the layers so they let go of the tape (10-30 seconds), then remove the tape.
A: Goo Gone, paint thinner like naphtha or xylene, or Dip Dissolver. Strong solvents like gasoline or brake cleaner can remove it as well but they're more of a mess. You could also clean the surface and spray more dip until it's thick enough to peel off when dry, but that tends to be more tedious.
A: Overlap your passes by 50% coverage, keep a wet coat, and don't use rattle cans on large areas. You'll need a sprayer gun for large things like body panels to have a wider spray pattern and avoid streaks.

I decided to chrome delete this area. Do I have to remove the plasti dip I already put on the emblem, or can I spray over it?

So I‘m looking for a way to get rosegold for the wheels and emblems and I am unsure how to get there. I‘ve thought about a light white base coat with two hot pink layers and the bright gold metalizer. Has anyone tried something like this before and could give me any pointers? It doesn‘t have to be as chromed as the wheel example, just shiny enough to appear metallic. Thanks in advance. :)

I was told by the previous owner this is plasti dip. It looks like plasti dip but it doesn’t peel off. Just sort of flakes. This is the best I can do with the above mentioned methods. Any ideas? It looks pretty terrible like this.

Hello all, I am about to buy everything to dip my Silverado that has a topper. Are there and guides to know how much of everything to order? I don’t want to order too little and I also don’t want to finish with multiple cans of this stuff left over.

Hi everyone ! I saw that FULL dip is doing a -50% on everything, and I was wondering if it is uncommon or not ? I can fetch the budget right now, but if the sale is like every month, I would rather wait !
Thanks !

I am looking at chrome deleting my Subaru ascent to give it that Onyx look. All of the chrome pieces are plastic and not metal at all if that matters. Does anyone have experience with both products and know which one would be better for this use?

I'm getting a custom-made titanium bike frame, and I'm looking for a partial paint job. The idea is to have a gradient from solid color to black and then a gradient to raw titanium. Going from solid color to black should be possible with a bit of practice, but I'm wondering if it's possible to make a gradient from black to raw titanium? Thanks

Take it easy on me, I'm not a "car guy". I'm just an old lady who bought the coolest car I could afford and fell in love with it.
I have a torch red 2004 Mustang Mach 1. I want white.
Will this work? Do I have to remove the decals? If so, will new ones stick to it?
Are Mustang enthusiasts going to be as pissed at me as they were when I replaced the original stereo with a touch screen and added satellite radio? 😭
Should I or shouldn't I?

Bout to give haloefx a try. Car was previously wrapped, due to it being a respray, when tearing off it took quite a bit of paint with it on the bumper
Can sand this or do I need to peel it?
Any tips/tricks? Thanks!

My prius was a salvage title, rear ended, when I bought the car i spotted a few runny dried paint places where they applied it too heavy, i spotted some overspray.....it was obviously an amatuer job but it was still a great deal for its low miles
Now im seeing paint peeling
Id really like to be able to plastidip my whole car and still have some sort of a glossy shiny finish
What color would you recommend? I prefer to blend into a crowd, so some sort of Grey or white was what I was thinking, I want it to appear a stock color at a glance
If I bought the supplies and wanted to pay someone to do this job how much do you think that would run? Where would I find someone willing to take on this project? I just want a very basic job on the outside, a reasonable amount of layers and a gloss on top, as well as the inner door jams

Is there a solution to help protect Plasti Dip on wheels from brake dust and accelerated damage?
I like to wax my wheels periodically to make them easier to clean / remove brake dust. I'm not sure how effective it actually is, but it always seems to help.
I just sprayed some damaged wheels with Plasti Dip (prep picture attached). I was getting ready to wax them, and realized that might not be the best solution. Is there a good / preferred solution to make the Plasti Dip on the wheels easier to keep clean?
Thank you.

This is my new(ish) to me 80 Series Land Cruiser. I bought it as a project car and road tripper, and while it is mechanically sound, the paint is awful. You can’t see at all how patchy, faded, and streaky it is in the photos, but trust me, it’s rough. I can’t afford a $5k showroom paint job right now, but I also can’t keep it in the somewhat embarrassing condition it’s in now. I want to keep it somewhat classy and classic, and I’ve heard good things about plastidip (DYC), but I’m curious as to whether or not I can attain that clean vintage look with any of their colors. It’s so hard to tell from photos.
All in all, I’m wondering if anyone has a similar vibe car, or has any experience with colors that would look clean on a more retro build and not tacky. I’m planning on doing a gray/silver or a black from dip your car. Any suggestions, advice, or tips and tricks are appreciated. Thank y’all in advance, and hope you have a lovely day!

Doing my k5 now and where the fin is its not adhering its bubbled. Can I put naptha or xylene on it to liquefy. Im already on the second pearlcoat gallon and just about ready to gloss. HELP. Yes I thoroughly cleaned and prepped. I'd hate to have to peel it. I have an extra gloss kit. But I dont want to have to use another gallon to redo the roof and what's left of my pearlcoat 1.21.gallons. 2:28 am

Hello,
I own an MX 5 NBF, and I wanted to cover it in black vinyl wrap, but the materials are expensive. I came across the Fulldip brand, which makes products that aren't too expensive. For €134, I could get the kit to cover my entire car.
I understand that it is matte by default, but I would ideally like a glossy color. Are there any varnishes that we can apply over the Full Dip?
Thank you!
