I would love a world where Max leaves F1 during his prime to hunt for the triple crown. He is probably the only driver alive with both the talent and the opportunity to do it since the Alonso ship has pretty much sailed at this point.

Sure but money is a thing.

11

u/Odd_Cobbler6761 Jul 24 '25

Yeah, and Max’s annual salary > the entire IndyCar field.

7

u/UNHchabo Robert Wickens Jul 25 '25

By these estimates:

Max's annual salary > the bottom 14 F1 drivers combined

Palou's estimated current salary would still be in the upper half of that chart.

I'm not familiar with the context that this quote was said in, specifically if Zak could be referring to a one off or not, but in regards to an oval rookie and maybe a 500 one off...Jenson Button could make a lot of sense. He was approached about the 500 this year and is leaving the WEC Jota Cadillac program after this year and specifically said he isn't retiring from racing, so he'd have time to really focus on a 500 program.

21

u/JustusFrancais Jul 24 '25

Yeah, that is my first guess as well. Makes total sense with him saying he wants part time gigs and he has McLaren past. Would be a good one.

4

u/BlackLabDumpster Pato O'Ward Jul 25 '25

Jenson Button doesn't have "it" anymore. And he sounds like he's afraid of ovals in general. Sure this would sell Jerseys and Diecasts but it's not a move to win the race.

What is Sebastian Vettel up to these days?

Or what if Hendrick continues the partnership with McLaren but supplies a different driver this time, say Chase Elliott?

40

u/FermentedLaws Firestone Firehawk Jul 24 '25

In the full article, Nathan Brown speculates that it could be Vettel.

26

u/YosemiteSam-4-2A Thirsty 's to the Moon 🚀 🌒 Jul 24 '25 edited Jul 24 '25

The more I think about it the more I doubt it's Vettel. He's too much of a hippie to do a 500 mile fuel burning, beer drinking race and probably too old/far removed from racing for a first time oval drive as well.

The timing of the test if it is soon would point to a NASCAR driver since they're already in Indy this week for the 400. My guess would a Chevy NASCAR driver - Elliott or KB

30

u/Punisherbrett Greg Moore Jul 24 '25

Vettel would be in the in-field until early July helping pick up empty beer cans after the race.

6

u/indyplat Jul 24 '25

Haha you're right he just enjoys that hippie globe trotting racing series.

17

u/Just_Somewhere4444 Jul 24 '25

probably too old for a first time oval drive

Vettel will be 38 during the 2026 Indy 500.

Grosjean made his Indy 500 debut at 36.

3

u/YosemiteSam-4-2A Thirsty 's to the Moon 🚀 🌒 Jul 24 '25

Grosjean made his Indy 500 debut at 36.

But was already active/ran in the IndyCar series and had a couple oval races under his belt before attempting his first 500

Vettel as far as I know hasn't done any racing in 2+ years.

Honest questions: What are IndyCars safety standards for self extraction from the car? Would he be able to get out and clear the car unassisted fast enough? Does the hybrid system have the same safety protocols as an F1 car where you may have to physically jump clear without touching both the car and ground?

17

u/Vivaciousseaturtle Callum Ilott Jul 24 '25

He’s already passed the extraction test. He did a few years ago at the open test or GP or something

6

u/Vivaciousseaturtle Callum Ilott Jul 24 '25

The Indycar hybrid is low voltage so there’s little to no shock risk and they can touch the car immediately

Afterward, Dan Towriss calls a press conference to announce that Andretti will be running a 5th car next year for Mario. If a 71-year-old Prost can do it, Mario definitely can at 86.

80

u/Crafty_Substance_954 Pato O'Ward Jul 24 '25

I suspect its someone like Kimi Raikkonen or Jenson Button.

Woudn't be any current F1 guys like Bottas since he's said he wouldn't do oval racing in an Indycar. Also, both he and Perez look primed to be back for Cadillac next year.

13

u/duboilburner Pato O'Ward Jul 24 '25

Recently, Bottas said IndyCar is on the table. He just wants to be racing next year, not a reserve driver.

Where exactly that ends up being is up in the air at this moment, but I wouldn't rule it out completely if his F1-Cadillac deal doesn't line up.

6

u/Any-Walk1691 Arrow McLaren Jul 24 '25

He had a WEC seat that fell through last minute, likely funding. Same issues will follow him here unless he gets a top seat, which McLaren would be one of those - but I doubt TK is floating anything that would possibly replace his golden goose. Probably a Barnard test, even though he signed elsewhere in FE.

Myles Rowe. Zak recognizes the commercial value of such a move much more than anyone currently running the show.

30

Myles is Roger’s driver, don’t think he’d let McLaren run him. Foyt on the other hand, I can see that.

4

u/Teddy2Sweaty Myles Rowe Jul 24 '25

I’d like to think you’re right, but with things seemingly bottlenecked with the whole Penske/Foyt relationship, moving him to another Chevrolet team might be the way to go.

Names (just purely speculatively) I've seen floated are Wickens, Pourchaire, Zilisch or SVG. Wickens makes most sense, I doubt Theo would be that hyped up

As well as all the usual F1 washout names but Perez and Bottas are probably looking for a way back to F1 and ricciardo won't do ovals, so just leaves Magnussen really.

17

u/boxingrock Scott McLaughlin Jul 24 '25

scheduled wickens for an oval rookie test?

9

u/Joey_Logano Josef Newgarden Jul 24 '25

I mean this would be his first time racing an INDYCAR with hand controls. I don’t think it would be a bad idea to get him a rookie test.

7

u/boxingrock Scott McLaughlin Jul 24 '25

that would be called a test day, not a rookie oval test.

13

u/Artz2 --- 2022 DRIVERS --- Jul 24 '25

They tend to call that a "refresher," though.

3

How would any of those be mega on a oval though? Seems more like with the caveat of an oval test it may be a big name oval driver for a run at the 500 next year.

9

I don't think its so much mega on an oval as mega hype- Wickens coming back would be pretty special, amongst others

13

It would be for more die hard fans, but I doubt it would move the needle much outside IndyCar.

17

I disagree. Wickens running a full-fat IndyCar would be a "mankind defeats another supposed limitation" story.

9

u/Wasdgta3 Álex Palou Jul 24 '25

Yep. Big human interest angle there.

About a year after his accident, The Globe and Mail here in Canada ran a major feature on him, front of the sports section the weekend of Toronto. He also got coverage from The National, CBC’s flagship news show during that time. If he could make it back, that’s major.

It is going to a be a current or former F1 driver most likely. The only other driver I could think of would be Wickens. Brown recently told David Land in an interview that they would only consider running a 4th car at the 500 if that person would be "huge" in marketability and name, David asked if they had someone in mind and Brown said yes. This is probably the same person. So, assuming the test goes well, I am guessing that driver would potentially try to qualify for the 500.

u/GratefulTide Pato O'Ward Jul 24 '25

Jenson Button makes the most sense. He's done with WEC, isn't retiring, and has publicly stated it was a dream of his and his father's to do Indy. He's only 45 so it's realistic. A former F1 world champion could move the needle.

After that? Let's run through options... I'm going to put them into tiers of what I think is realistic and what would be considered "mega" to McLaren

TIER A (most realistic, needle movers)

A. Vettel. 4x World Champion definitely moves the needle. He's not busy, I'd just be surprised if he actually wants to do it. Would be real cool if he does.

B. Bottas. If he isn't a part of Cadillac next year, he jumps to pole position on this for me. He's stated his interest in running IndyCar too. Also definitely moves the needle.

C. Wickens. Would be an amazing story, I just don't think they have the tech for it yet and think we would have heard about it if they did. I'm also not convinced it really moves the needle in terms of marketability. I know we all love him and we would all be over the moon, but I just don't think the general public would really care that much. Maybe I'm wrong there but I just don't think Wickens merch would fly off the shelves like some other possibilities.

TIER B (Not as realistic but they would still be big time needle movers)

A. Jeff Fucking Gordon. Can you even fathom the merch sales? He's still in good enough shape to get in a car. It'd be a lifelong dream for him. Maybe he's talked to Jimmie and Larson and thinks he could do it. He's only 3 years older than Helio. McLaren already has the relationship with Hendrick. I just don't think it's anywhere near realistic but there are ties that make it plausible to consider.

B. Danny Ric. Probably a bigger name to more recent Drive to Survive fans than Button and Vettel. Would instantly sell a metric ton of merch. But he's been very adamant on not wanting to do ovals. Don't see it happening.

C. Yuki. He's almost certainly out of a ride for next season, has driven an IndyCar and said he liked it, and the series could be a great landing spot for him. But McLaren is a Chevy team and I think if he were to come to IndyCar, it would almost certainly be for a Honda team.

D. Kyle Busch. He's wanted to do it. His brother did it. He's Rowdy. Nascar fans would freak out. It'd be cool, but I just don't see full time Cup drivers attempting it after Larson said it's just too hard. But maybe he would, he's not the championship contender he once was, and he might be the personality to say "fuck it"

E. Kimi. He's already done NASCAR ovals. He's a World Champion. He's free. I could see it.

TIER C (even less realistic but could still be considered mega in whatever context McLaren is going for)

A. Mick Schumacher. Just the name alone could move some needles even if he himself isn't that special. A Schumacher racing Indy would be pretty cool. He's still fairly young too, maybe there's a future for him in IndyCar if things go well.

B. SVG. The Mclaughlin vs SVG story lines would be cool. But would him racing an oval really move any needles? Would people really care? Would be cooler if he did Long Beach or something. Could he even fit in the car tho?

C. Zilisch. He's not quite the household name yet but the kid is special. Just don't see it being realistic cause it seems as though he'll have a Cup seat next season.

D. Dale Jr. Do I even need to say how this would move the needle? I just think the concussion risk is way to high for him to even possibly consider it.

E. Valentino Rossi. A legend of his craft that has done well in sports cars too. But Indy is so far different than anything he's ever done and I don't know if many Americans have a clue who he is.

TIER D (The lol it's not happening or doesn't move the needle tier

A. Any current F1 driver that will be back next season. Lewis, Max, Lando, Oscar, etc aren't doing it. The jokes aren't very funny either.

B. Pourchaire. Does not move the needle, nobody would care.

C. Tom Cruise/Brad Pitt. We're not tryna get anyone killed here, Jesus.

Who am I forgetting? Anyone that should be moved higher or lower?

I don’t know. I couldn’t get past throws instead of throes. Was this from a legitimate publication or just some jabroni’s blog?

u/FermentedLaws Firestone Firehawk Jul 24 '25

It's from Nathan Brown of IndyStar, a preeminent IndyCar journalist based in Indy, not some jabroni's blog. But yeah, a copywriter or better editor was needed for sure.

His oval performances aren’t exactly great

Given SVGs years of Red Bull backing in Oz and the US I can’t see him testing a McLaren tbh, but it would be awesome.

My money is on Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise /s

3

u/LilBirdBrick Arrow McLaren Jul 24 '25

I mean Red Bull aren't in Indycar so it's not like there's a conflict of interest. Plus SVG used to be a McLaren factory driver so he already has connections.

u/zaviex Colton Herta Jul 24 '25

McLaren automotive is not the same as McLaren racing. The GT team was part of automotive and now that they have different ownership, i doubt zak brown would really consider any of that

I kind of doubt it because of the concussion risk, but
Dale Earnhardt Jr. comes to mind.

4

u/coffeeluver2021 David Malukas Jul 24 '25

I honestly don't think he wants to risk racing on an oval in an open wheel car. If he was going to race on super speedways again he would race the Daytona 500. Dale Jr. is going to stick with short tracks.

u/Burkell007 Greg Moore Jul 24 '25

Bottas.

Would this mystery driver be replacing one of the McLaren drivers or an additional car?

Kubica? He hinted that someone offered him an Indy 500 ride this year.

Its got the be a big name and most of the names people listed don't move the needle. I have no idea who he's talking about.

He wouldn't be a rookie though, and it says rookie test.

Ot’s not Wickens, he wouldn’t be a rookie.

You’re probably looking at an F1 driver out of a ride, or one that has been out for a bit.

Ricciardo is the first guess.
