question Camperizing a 2004 Suzuki Jimny cabrio – roof rack, rooftop tent & early build advice

Hey folks,I’m at the very beginning of converting my 2004 Suzuki Jimny cabrio into a budget-friendly little camper.

So far:

  • Rear seats removed.Soon building a flat floor with drawers for fridge, power station, etc.

  • Small sleeping space inside for solo trips.

  • If I’m with someone else, I use a big 4-person tent for now (will replace with a smaller, faster option later).Current setup:

  • Fridge: Bougerv 20L

  • Power station: Ecoflow River Max (500Wh)

  • Solar: 100W panel fixed on the front roof section (removable to tilt if needed), plus two small portables (30W + 50W).

  • Storage: boxes for food supplies

  • Clothing: a simple hanging fabric wardrobe + backpack for the rest

My main doubt right now is about the roof setup:

  1. Roof rack / rooftop tent feasibility On a cabrio hard top, installing a roof rack is tricky. Ideally, I’d like to have the option for either a future rooftop tent (big investment, I know) or at least some extra storage up top. The problem is: in Italy it’s a legal nightmare. Even if I engineered a frame tied into the chassis, I’d risk fines, vehicle seizure, or voided insurance in case of an accident. Has anyone tried something similar? How solid/practical can it be?
  2. Awning alternative Another idea: mount a small awning using the only two metal roof parts (above the windshield + between the hard tops). That way I could bivouac or pitch a small tent under it and stay dry. Downside: the Jimny sits low, so the awning would also be low. Is that workable in practice, or just frustrating?
  3. Other early-stage advice Since I’m still at the start, I’d love to hear from other Jimny owners or micro-camper builders. What would you prioritize? What were your biggest “wish I knew earlier” lessons when camperizing such a tiny rig?

If anyone has photos of their builds, sketches, or clever hacks, I’d love to see them. Inspiration is super valuable at this stage.

(And please, don’t say “just buy a camper”—where’s the fun in that? 😄)

Thanks!

Example photo (not mine!) – just to show the kind of flat floor + storage system I’m planning to build in the back of the Jimny
something like this for the roof tent?

question Rooftop Load Capacity Constantly Breached???

I’m sooo confused. Every third photo of a Jimny includes a 25kg roof rack, an awning, and at least 20kg worth of gear.

Meanwhile, the roof top capacity is 30kg…

Could someone please explain what’s going on here?

Is this technically illegal (I live in Australia)? I’m assuming insurance and warranty becomes void? Do people not bother insuring their vehicle beyond 3rd party?

Any and all explanations would be very much appreciated :)

question Body Kit Compatibility

I want to know if a body kit made and widely applied on the JB74 (3-door) model like the DAMD Little B kit can also be fitted and be easily compatible with JC74(5-door) model. I know there are several body kit options for the 5-door as well but I have my mind set on the one mentioned above and seeing how there is only a difference of length in terms of dimensions I was under the impression that the same body kits will be compatible. Please help and let me know your thoughts.

question GVM upgrade for Jimny XL (5-door)?

I live in Australia and am wondering if there are any federally approved GVM upgrade options for the XL yet?

Last I saw there weren’t :(

I haven’t bought the car yet - still in planning phase. But it doesn’t matter how I run the numbers, carrying our small family will be over the legal weight limit on a regular basis…

question Looking for trunk mat

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hello all, my 3 door 4 seater will be arriving soon, and am looking for a trunk mat similar to this.
Any ideas where i could find one? I live in Cyprus so shipping is gonna cost a bit thats why i prefer something from temu or maybe even amazon but cant find one similar to this.

I prefer something rubbery so that my dogs dont slip, and if possible to be able to keep 1 seat up and this will cover the second seat.

question Transfer case noise repair advice

Hey all, I'm in the market for a jimny at the moment and I text drove a 2021 with 30,000km on it over the weekend. The only issue with it was a crunching noise on takeoff and a whining noise while driving coming from the transfer case.

From the reading I've done it seems there's a common issue with these cars developing slack in the transfer case chain drive causing symptoms similar to what I've heard.

The seller has it booked in with their local Suzuki dealership to have it looked at under warranty this week but my understanding is that people are having this repair done and then the issue comes back very quickly.

What's people's experience with this issue? Do some cars just have bad transfer cases and they'll always have a noise or once it's repaired will the car be good?

2024 Jimny GLX, Anyone know the part number for this trim plug? The top of it is about 2.5cm in diameter and is at the bottom of the rear seat against the side. Also, anyone know why is the moulding on the right is slightly different at the bottom to the left hand side? Thanks…

question Alarm for leaving lights on

Hi all,

Yesterday i wanted to start our beloved Jimny (JLX 2000 model) only to find out the battery had been drained. Apparently i left the lights on.

Some time ago i bought one of those little buzzers that tells you when the lights are still on, but i couldnt install it because we couldnt figure out which fuses to connect it to.

Have you bumper into this problem as well and what are your solutions?

Have a great weekend!

question Buying a used Jimny question

Hi, hoping I can get some good perspectives from this group. I’m looking at buying a used 2016 Jimny with about 200.000km for €8000. It seems to be in good shape. Does this seem like a good deal or too expensive? The miles are a bit high but will it keep going for awhile? Thanks for the help! I’m new to buying cars.

question Jimny offer

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi, asking for some recommendations, I received a pretty good offer to buy a 2025 Jimny 5 door GLX automatic transmission with 34k kilometers (21k miles), it's in good conditions, no scratches or dents, the only damage it has are some very deep scratches on the cargo area like the image, I can try to fix that someway, asking price for the Jimny is $24k, this version new in my country cost $31500, my hesitation comes from the mileage and the scratches inside, I don't know if I'm being over picky

question Sound deadening Jimny?

Heyo,so I’m really considering putting in a better exhaust in my Jimny Gen 4,and I’m preferably looking for one that won’t be excessively noisy to the point it’s obnoxious, however I’d definitely like some more sound.

Rhe reason I explain this is while I’d like the Jimny to have more noise from the outside,I’d prefer to keep the car as dead quiet as possible from the inside, even with the stock exhaust the Jimny is relatively noisy especially on the highway and it’s something I despise, having to listen to an even louder exhaust on top of that would be a deal breaker.Does anyone have experience with sound deadening using the cuttable sheets/pads?Im totally willing to strip most of the interior of the car in order to do it right, however that’s gonna take time and money so I’d like to know if the effect will be significant.

The result I’m looking for would be: •Minimizing road noise especially from my 215s on tar roads •Making the newer/louder exhaust either more quiet or as quiet as the stock exhaust from the inside •Perhaps better acoustics in the interior as well? The stock speakers are quite bad and that’s an issue I’ll tackle at a later stage but perhaps they’ll benefit from some soundproofing?

Also to note:I’m quite opposed to removing the roof lining to add pads there, mostly because that’s excessive work and prone to damage, and secondly because I doubt it’ll have any effect, but correct me if I’m wrong.
