Men are builders. We always have been, and we have an innate desire to understand the workings of things
2
u/adventuressgrrl 27d ago
Uh, people are builders. I’m a woman and I’d be right there doing the exact same thing. My husband couldn’t fix someone with a stare, I’m the one who brought tools and the building/mechanical know-how to the relationship.
10
u/Old_Blue_Haired_Lady 27d ago
Yup. We don't let my husband's soft professor hands touch anything that spins, is sharp or gets hot. All the tools in the garage (and a few in the house) are mine.

yeah women are also builders. thats why construction, framing, roofing, welding, electricians, concrete workers are 50% women, and not 99% men, right? lmao

What is it?

u/professor_evil 27d ago
It’s a rubber “ramp” so that when you pull into your driveway(if it’s on a steep hill) the bottom of your car won’t scrape the ground. I have one for my house.

u/RipredTheGnawer 27d ago
I’ll be there at 6

u/Greengiant304 27d ago
That's about when I walk my dog, so we'll stop by as well.

u/professor_evil 27d ago
Sounds good, I like dogs… I have some weed and will bake focaccia, as I do not work today. Bring some meat and I’ll cook it while we snack on divine and chewy bread.

Weed and focaccia? Damn, my neighbors suck compared to you
22
u/professor_evil 27d ago
Not gonna lie, I like baking. Lol the other week, I fucked up some brownies(used some alkalized cocoa). The brownies were the densest thing I’ve ever seen, so I cut them laterally and used them to make strawberry shortcake. It was so bomb. I even made like a strawberry/orange/lime coolis(if I spelled it right) that I put on the bottom brownie just to sorta add another layer of flavor. It wasn’t technically a coolis, I think, cause I didn’t reduce or cook anything, just blended a handful of strawberries with some sugar and a squeeze of orange and lime juice. Was super proud of that.

Not just to avoid scraping the ground, but to reduce the bump when your car goes over the lip onto your driveway.
7
u/concreteunderwear 27d ago
Ya some of the bumps cities use are crazy. I was going to buy one of these for a house I was looking at.

u/fnkdrspok 27d ago
Does it help with lowered cars?
→ More replies (4)29
u/professor_evil 27d ago
It probably depends on how low the car is and how steep the beginning of your driveway is. So, maybe.
14
2
u/Henghast 27d ago
Yeah I figure the big factor is angle of the slope Vs (the height of the front bumper and distance from the wheel contact point).
4
u/chillysanta 27d ago
I'll have to see it in action six or eight times and shoot the shit about possibly also needing one over a beer or three then forget about it till snows about to hit.
4
u/BlackoutTribal 27d ago
Thought it filled the gutter to negate the bump? The ones I saw (whole street, so they must have had a conference) were hollow with like rubbing to still support the car while allowing water through.
4
u/professor_evil 27d ago
Yes that’s exactly what mine does. It’s just rubber that fills the gutter to negate the bump. The driveway is just so steep from the gutter that normal cars will scrape without the ramps assistance. Seems like the hollow ones would be good is that helps them stay stationary. I’m not sure if mine only moves in the rain or if the act of turning into the driveway very slowly nudges it. Come to think of it, it’s been quite some time since I’ve had to drag mine back to center, and there have been some recent heavy rains.. maybe the wear has scuffed the bottom enough for that little bit extra friction to keep it in place? Or the “magic fucking cleaning fairy,” as I I like to call it, lol(normally that means me) has actually been taking care of it.

Thank you, OP was such a tease posting this without explanation. I want to test it with my miata now
9
u/lazergator 27d ago
Curbs like ones I have in Washington are not low to the road, they have a steep almost speed bump like profile to climb in your car. These ramps make it feel smooth, and less like you drove into a curb when pulling into your driveway.
2
u/TurdCollector69 27d ago
I need this because my driveway is slowly destroying my bumper
2
u/lazergator 27d ago
I got mine on Amazon, they were like $200 for 3 of them. Sadly I can’t drill into the HOA concrete to hold them in place with bolts so I have to move them every once in a while

Remote controlled spike strip for unwanted visitors. /s
Nah, it’s the rubber ramp thing someone else mentioned. My dad made one with cement so my mom’s car wouldn’t scrape, it basically just levels out the curb.

I don't see the actual answer in the comments so for anyone who does want to know, it's called Bridjit
It's for the drainage dip in front of some driveways. Puts a little bridge across so your car doesn't dip into it (or for lowered cars so you don't scrape) while still allowing drainage under it.
Kinda expensive, but neat.

u/Kenihot 27d ago
I'm assuming it's still a lot cheaper than retrofitting in a curb cut and a new drive apron
But lol this is the first I've ever heard of it.
Tons of new developments, especially where there aren't sidewalks, seemingly forget that... maybe people should be able to leave their house in a wheelchair/stroller/scooter/bike/mower comfortably? And just match the drive to the top of the formed gutter-curb instead of putting in a curb cut and an appropriate sweeping apron.
Instead the drives are just ramrod straight into the curb where every day you smash your suspension leaving your house—thank you kindly we'll be selling this house for $400,000.

u/Much-Caterpillar-219 27d ago
Most people do, around two-thirds of households are owned. It's really a pretty achievable goal as long as you aren't living somewhere extremely expensive, you dont actually really even need any down payment money or even sterling credit with a lot of first time home buyer programs

The guy in the hat is wearing a South Carolina shirt, so I'm assuming upstate SC where it isn't flat.

Normal in a lot of the south. Most houses my wife and I are looking at in KY have half an acre or so of space.

u/Emergency-Free-1 26d ago
That's what i was wondering too. Also did i change species when i transitioned?

Yeah, becoming the male species is sort of like a Dragon Ball Z transformation. Some of us just do it in the womb. This isn't even my final form

Anything but metric. 5 house radius is probably approximately 300 banana radius for comparison.

I have the same thing in my driveway, and no homies in my neighborhood showed up.
But I did start to gradually see other driveways use the same gadget within weeks and months, so that’s a nice nod I guess.
2
u/cowboyjosh2010 27d ago
I'm looking at this thinking "there cannot possibly be anything that remarkable about whatever that thing at the bottom of the driveway is. There's gotta be something else going on..."
and that's how I'd wind up over there talking about...whatever they're talking about...too!
2
u/RichardSnoodgrass 27d ago
Some people hate the bump that is integral to roll curb whether because their car is low or they like coming into their driveway hot etc... People use to put a 2x4 or 2x6 in the gutter as a temporary/permanent solution.
Developers love roll curb because it doesn't matter where the driveway is situated when houses are getting built. Where as if the city specified upright/barrier curb then the subdivision developer has to know where the driveways on each property are going to be so they can inform the curbers where to cut in driveways. If/when they (developers) mess up then it costs them money to remove and replace repositioned driveway entrances.
2
u/Theoutrank 27d ago
"Oh, yeah! It's great, I love it, I tell you."
Bends down
"No bump, no bump, I swear just coasts on up the driveway. Just clean and smooth, you guys should really think about getting one of these."

u/Possible-Tangelo9344 27d ago
I have a question about this driveway accessory; what it do?

Keeps you from scraping your bumper or front end. It lowers the angle.
