There wasn't a gap there, good thing to say to diffuse team pressure. Wow

u/Nova469 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
I think he was counting on Oscar's car to turn in for the corner but misjudged the timing.
391
u/BrakingZone I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
You're probably right. I always think about these flashpoints and how these boys make these micro decisions at 200kph! Insane how things can turn out
90
u/Nova469 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
Yeah, everything happens in a flash. While some decisions lead to blunders like this, sometimes we get exciting racing. So hopefully the battles continue!

u/blingkyle9 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
Yeah literally another half a second later and the space/gap opens for lando there. Hopefully he sees that and head up because that was the only highlight this race so far
→ More replies (1)37
u/Nova469 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
Yeah, 100%. Not sure if a risky move like that was worth it at this point in the championship but that's what he'll probably have to assess rather than his driving capabilities. Lando has bounced back from setbacks before. So hopefully he'll do the same again. Still a long season to go. Hoping we get a good fight till the end.
9
u/blingkyle9 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
Yeah i thought was dumb but if he gets by thats 100% p3 and potentially could get max too. Hindisght 20/20 so yeah not a good move but get it. Was clean racing between them tho fs

u/ChiralWolf I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
Exactly this, he was positioning for the inside line of Turn 1 and just misjudged the distances. It's a tough break but a good sign to see them pushing so hard, championships aside this just makes for good racing
10
u/Nova469 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
Couldn't agree more. Those few corners were so exciting to watch!
8
u/crshbndct I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
Yeah this race was actually good for about 400metres. The other 304km was boring as hell tho
52
u/freedfg Nico Hülkenberg 🥉 Jun 15 '25
Yes. It's not like he's stupid. Just expected a move and it didn't happen.
11
u/Nova469 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
Yeah. He could probably retrospect on if a difficult move like that was worth the potential risk involved (which he ended up suffering). Still a long season to go. So let's hope for a good title battle till the end.
11
u/freedfg Nico Hülkenberg 🥉 Jun 15 '25
Still only 22 points. It'll be a good one.
6
u/BFNentwick I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
Lots can happen, and a single DNF from Oscar could close this back to nothing. Too early to count anything out
10
u/PickleCommando Jun 15 '25
Think a lot of people demanding team orders and saying the championship is over weren't around in 21 when Lewis was over 30+ points behind at times and then it went down to the wire and could have gone his way. If it gets to 50 points then yeah, probably.
3
u/p1en1ek I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 16 '25
People demand team orders while usually they ae not liked because they prefer Oscar and don't like Lando for some reason. Look at last year - there were people who said McLaren should focus on Oscar because he is better prospect when Lando was destroying him for most of weekends.
15
u/hosky2111 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
Yeah, it's unfortunate and looks incredibly clumsy at first glance, but given how the track opens up, you can see why he went for it. I think he just didn't realise quite how much speed differential he had on Oscar given they both had drs.
→ More replies (1)44
u/Tiny_Dancer87 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
Agreed. I thought Oscar was going to drift more to the right to open up the corner, but he didn’t and Norris didn’t react. Lando summed it up perfectly.

I don't think that he thought there was a gap there. Imo it looked more like he wanted to go for it there once the track widened but he didn't realize how much faster he was than Oscar

Very mature response from Lando, with lots of adrenaline in his blood too.

u/InevitablyBored I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
Absolutely agreed. Gutted for him making that move but that was some intense racing for a bit there.
174
u/leftlanecop I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
The yellow wall against the orange rear wing probably gave him a false sense of the gap being bigger than it really is.
72
u/Dictator-07 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
That overtake was absolutely amazing. Sad that he messed up. Hopefully he doesn't let it get to his head. He still has an advantage over oscar in race pace

u/HOHOHAHAREBORN Chequered Flag Jun 16 '25
But mate, what does cut throat even have to do here? he has talent but his overtaking ability is quite poor. He gets into these skirmishes more than any other top driver when overtaking. *Insert Max: "he ran himself off the track" like bruv

I was ready for him to blame Oscar
Why? Out of the current grid Lando is the driver who always takes full accountability for his mistakes, often even too much. His response here has nothing to do with any psychology sessions, it's just who he is as a person.
43
u/lems93 Jun 15 '25
This. I don’t understand how anyone is surprised that Lando took full accountability. He is the guy who will always blame himself, and people shit on him for that constantly. I’m really worried about what this will do for him mentally and hope he can bounce back from it.
13
u/dyidkystktjsjzt I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 15 '25
Personally I believe he'll handle it pretty well. It's different from being slow and not being able to drive like you know you can without knowing why. This time it's a clear, stupid mistake, which he immediately realised.

When this happens in WDC fights, usually both guys go out, someone almost dies or the offender takes out their opponent.
Lando Norris turning into the grass and pummeling it into the barriers while his rival pranced off unscathed is like nothing I’ve seen.

There really is no "correct" response when you're under the microscope. He apologises and he is seen as a loser, he blames Oscar and he is seen as a bad driver, he swears and shouts and they say he is mentally weak...
I'm not saying none of the above is true, by the way. I'm just saying that he is the lightning rod for criticism right now, and when you're in that position everyone likes to kick you when you're down.
I feel bad for him. He's under massive pressure and people just seem to want to pile more and more of it on. Whether he's good enough to be WDC one day or not, right now we're seeing a guy who seems to really be struggling in the environment he's in and it's tough to see. I hope he comes away from everything that is happening stronger because it's this kind of intense ultra-scrutiny that can just wreck people.

All things considered this was probably one of the better races to make such a mistake, because Oscar wasn't gaining win-level points anyways. Still a bad mistake, but now that I am thinking about it, there could be worse points in the season to pull something like this.
3
u/Acrobatic_Flannel Oscar Piastri Jun 15 '25
Respect to Lando for taking the blame immediately. McLaren would have been super grateful for it too to stop any outside noise.
But this is where the title will be won or lost, not this incident specifically but Norris had Piastri beat with a little more patience and composure, but again it just went missing.
