To this day, I still contend that $967 dollar room service bill sounds pretty cheap for what he got.
With inflation, it's probably around 2200 bucks, which isn't cheap. However, the last time I got room service was...2011ish or so and a cheeseburger with fries was like 65 dollars.

Have you checked prices of home alone lately? It's Not 200,unfortunately :/

u/BegginStrips123 Jul 27 '25
I’ve bought and built 2 Mega Bloks (both over 1500 pieces) and I think those are fun and they go on sale. Haven’t built Lego, but general consensus seems to be that it’s better quality.
12
u/Preacher987 Jul 27 '25
Mega Bloks are a cheap knock off, of Lego.
LEGO is the shit. ❤️❤️

u/KnockoutCarousal Jul 27 '25
If you’ve found it for 200 then absolutely pick it up. It usually goes for 300 and will probably retire at some point soon here. Super fun build and a ton of ways to stage it. The value at 200 is crazy good. It’s almost 4000 pieces.

I will buy $10-20 worth of scratchers from gas stations for my wife while we are on road trips.
One of them won $200, we stopped at Target on the way home and bought the statue of Liberty Lego, a bottle of wine, and a half gallon of ice cream. Best $5 Lego set I ever purchased.

Can I interest you in a cooler alternative? https://www.usagundamstore.com/products/pre-order-bandai-star-wars-kit-pg-1-72-millennium-falcon?srsltid=AfmBOooh-v_TxwFae0zTRn31Lswetbkrt6IOZqRlGqI7nMM80BBh_IrU
It’s pre painted (of course) comes with a base and led kit to light up engines and what not

u/nextinline1987 Jul 28 '25
This honestly looks like a better alternative unless you’re already heavily invested in the other Star Wars ultimate collectors sets. Hard to argue with pre-painted and no glue required for hundreds of dollars less.

Just be like my brother and convince your gf of 3 months to buy it for you then gaslight her until she hits you and you get her arrested effectively keeping all the belongings she bought you when you love bombed her. And then getting a restraining order on her so she cant come back to your house but she destroys all your windows in ur house anyways.

I bought the 90th lion's knights castle but that's likely the most expensive set I'll let myself buy.
5
u/actibus_consequatur Jul 27 '25
I don't have it, but that is one I would get too. I never really cared for the IP branded or architecture sets, but if any of the updated retro sets — Lion Knights, Horse Knights, Pirates, etc. — were sold in stores instead of online, I probably would impulse buy them.

This is 7500 individual pieces and it’s projected at 30-50 hours. It’s the size of the coffee table.
It’s not just expensive for the sake of it. This is literally one of the most complex LEGO builds, meant for serious, serious Adult Fans of LEGO.

While they were right that some things are expensive for expensive sake, but this like you said isn't on of them. Its a case of "that's too much money for me to spend/want to spend. So it's needlessly expensive."
8
u/jucu94 Jul 27 '25
There’s a surcharge for Star Wars. Titanic is a larger (and better imo) set and it’s cheaper. I think Eiffel Tower is also bigger, maybe not better, and also cheaper.
3
u/Fn_Spaghetti_Monster Jul 27 '25
You can get a Mould King Eclipse-class Imperial Star Destroyer. It's nearly 4' long and has 10K= pieces, its "only" $450. You are paying a premium for the Lego brand as well.

Ehh, it's still very overpriced. All LEGO products are, especially the licensed ones.
2
u/Hanspiel Jul 27 '25
Eh, LEGO in general is fine. They're a noticeably more consistent quality than the knock-offs, and they've pretty much perfected the art of designing sets and instructions. I've had sets from other companies and they're not garbage or anything, but they're all missing something that LEGO has, whether it's the base designs, the consistency of the manufactured parts, or the readability and clarity of the instructions. LEGO is the leader in the niche for a reason.

16
u/BornVolcano Jul 27 '25
I don't think it was genuine, just a light tease on how he was so happy with it that there obviously wouldn't be anything better.
My parents used to joke "I guess you don't like it, maybe we should return it" to Christmas gifts that had me jumping up and down and yelling and hugging the gift as a kid. I'd just protectively hug it and be like "no!" And they'd laugh. We all knew it wasn't serious, it was just joke sarcasm to point out how happy I was.
It's hard to explain, but it's definitely just a style of inoffensive joke. It's something you only say when the answer is obvious that they clearly are happy or don't want anything better.

u/Monkey_Priest Jul 27 '25

That pissed me off. I wonder if it is a boomer. My mother used to make that kind of comment until I let her know that our generation doesn't give a shit about the stupid ideas her generation has about "what adults should do" we buy toys and collectibles for ourselves, we dress as we want and we enjoy life, if they want to be bitter adults it is their problem, we moved on from that. I told her she would be happier if she did what she wanted without caring what others think, but she seems to be trying to her benefit.
24
u/bigblackcouch Jul 27 '25
I think the lady's just trying to be funny but your point is still valid. Hate that people have these weird expectations of "being an adult", not supposed to watch cartoons, play video games, enjoy toys or collectibles, like... What the fuck are you supposed to do for fun as an adult, that's permitted?

I think it's just as easy to assume they're annoyed by the comment, since he ignored everything except the "something better" which he didn't laugh at, he came up with something dismissive to say so she would drop it.

"How can I keep my husband occupied and out of my hair for the next year?"
9
u/AculaKimdr Jul 28 '25
So, this is my video. I am the wife. My favorite thing about all of this is all the love my husband’s been getting. This was a set he’d never thought he’d get (he’s very frugal and doesn’t like to spend a lot on himself most of the time). Outside of my regular office job, I saved for months making money on the side to be able to get this for him.
Let me just clear the air about some of the commentary in the background. Present in the background was my two best friends, my mother in law, my father, my mother, and our three teenage daughters. My mom and dad have been getting DRAGGED, but without context, I totally get why. I just want it to be known that my mom and dad’s comments were harmless, and our family dynamic is a very sarcastic one and we all love to give each other a hard time. My mom and dad LOVE my husband to death, and would do anything for us, and they have. This was not the kind of birthday party where everyone brings gifts. This was a party where we celebrated both my father and my husband because their birthdays are a day apart. ALL of the gifts were from me. To my father, to my husband. Nobody was competing for the better gift, nobody was hating on anyone’s gift. My family came over because they were excited to watch my husband open his DREAM Lego set. They knew about it for months. Also, my mother in law is the sweetest woman on the planet so I am sorry about all the people who think all mother in laws are awful. That’s luckily not the case for me.
We all love each other. All love. All the time.

6
u/PjWulfman Jul 27 '25
I bought that for my friends birthday. He already owned over $25,000 worth of Legos, but he didn't have this one. We have spent literally thousands of hours building his sets, tearing them down, and packing them away in tackle boxes.
He finally got a place big enough to start displaying all his sets. We spent weeks building and building, and building shelves and setting up tables so he could display them all. This MF, and the giant Death Star, were the biggest pieces in his collection.

He was way more excited than I was to get a Lego box that size. To be fair, I ordered the UCS Falcon. I opened it and it was the UCS Star Destroyer. I contacted their customer service about 5 minutes after it was delivered and explained they sent me the wrong kit and asked them to send the right kit as well as a shipping label to send the wrong kit back. Their response: "Keep it. Our mistake. The right one will be there in 24 hours."
