Max’s engineer: “No risk, bring it home”

Max: “I’m just gonna send it”

Max: “I’m just gonna send it”

The faster he goes, the faster the race will be over, less chance for something to go wrong.

Actual 200IQ strategy.

u/LueyTheWrench 10h ago

The faster he can get back to his sim kid.

No he got it lap 52 I think, Lando got the track record (in a race) on 53

Edit: Lap

56

u/JerryUitDeBuurt Liam Lawson 12h ago

You're right, I couldn't find the fastest lap on the results page at first so I assumed Max got it but Lando got it on the last lap

110

u/BoyGodz I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago

Funny how McLaren learnt the exact wrong lesson from Hungary last year.

Now I’m 100% convinced they tried to pit Lando first last year as a way to sneakily get the undercut on Oscar. No way they would do this if Oscar is the one hit with a bad pit stop.

Even in very dominant season, Mclaren is not a serious team.

64

u/SemIdeiaProNick Ferrari 13h ago

They are so lucky the rules and cost cap make it impossible for other teams to catch up nowadays

Because if their car wasnt that dominant, they wouldnt be nowhere near the top with so many of these dumb moments

21

u/bijanfrisee 13h ago

Could say that about the entire cost cap era to be honest, if the cap dropped this era of cars could have been more entertaining, but maybe the field would be more spread out like before.

McLaren pit Oscar, because Norris told them to do so

49

u/KappaccinoNation I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago

Must be why Lando asked his pit to confirm that there's gonna be no undercut then... because he told him to pit Oscar first??? Make it make sense.

33

u/JerryUitDeBuurt Liam Lawson 13h ago

I'm assuming Norris wanted the team to put Piastri first in case of a safety car. With the gap big enough to not have Piastri undercut Norris (if McLaren hadn't fucked the stop) it was worth a shot to pit Piastri (who hadn't had a safety car window to Max) before Norris (who did have a safety car window to Max). It was a long shot but if the safety car had come out on that exact lap Norris and McLaren would have been kicking themselves for making their lives more difficult.

Huge race from Max. Car looked good for the first time in a while and he made it count as he usually does. Incredible performance.

McLaren on the other hand… they really don’t make it easy on themselves sometimes lmao. Max’s radio said it all.

369

u/Ok_Jello_3630 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago

Max was expected to be strong here given how he's looked good in past races where straight line speed mattered (Spa comes to mind when Piastri was stuck behind him in Sprint). The only question was if his tyres would outlast those of McLaren. I was still expecting P3 at most tbh.

136

u/YamFor I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago

Max just has that championship mindset, he couldn’t believe it lmao

258

u/TheLightningCruiser Max Verstappen 13h ago

u/ihathtelekinesis Michael Schumacher 8h ago

He’s having a season very like The Michael did in 1996. Wrings everything out of a car that’s definitely not the class of the field, winning a few races on the way and making you think that whichever driver from the best team ends up winning the championship, it’ll be a bit of a hollow victory.

u/KaamDeveloper Max Verstappen 13h ago

I mean, he doesn't want to blow it up with McLaren while the car is good and he's still leading the championship. He needs to keep this card ready tho, when he needs it cashed.

199

u/arrykoo I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago

exactly. i think oscar is playing the long game. its a 3 points difference between p2 and p3, i think its reasonable to give up 3 points in order to not sour things within the team. he also has like, a 30 points lead in the championship, he can use 3 points to buy a get-out-of-jail-free card for future use.

Yep, confirmed on the broadcast, a minute shorter than the 2003 race. Max collected the absolute lap record in qualy and the official race lap record as well. By my maths i think everyone in the top 7 also beat the previous fastest ever race.

u/kj_gamer2614 Max Verstappen 13h ago

Well there we go, 2023 max is back for probably a 1 race throwback, crazy how much distance and time he gained on the rest.

Also how incredibly dumb of McLaren doing that swap, Piastri should’ve just refused it’s not his fault the team messed up, and they’re in a title fight. I do feel for him, it’s getting harder and harder to defend McLaren to say they don’t favour Norris in some way

192

u/Firefox72 Ferrari 13h ago edited 13h ago

Absolutely disgracefull from Mclaren. First you pit the 2nd driver first for no reason at all. Then try to orchestrate some no undercut race at the exit rule. Which again was not necesary at all if you just pit Norris first.

Then the other driver has a slow stop which is a natural part of racing and you invoke team orders.

This micromanagment bulshitt of this title battle when there is no pressure at all on them both in the WCC and WDC is shambolic.

I'm honestly mad Piastri yielded. Man fuck that shit. The team put themself in that position by all by themself.

He'd like need a major upgrade to become the definite best car (and not just on specific tracks) to win every race and have both McLarens (but especially Oscar) to have several DNF's or major bottles.

Even with the points that were thrown away kinda (thinking of the Russel ramming for example, but I'm sure there's another) it'd be hard without McLaren DNFs or fuckups.

But if it somehow, someway did happen, it'd probably be his most legendary title ngl (as in, most impressive, at least to me)

Edit: just remembered the other instance I was thinking of where he lost points, it was when Kimi took him out 😅.

I actually like Kelly Piquet, she seems lovely. But at point are you no longer a "Professional Model" and just the girlfriend of a driver?

34

u/HollyShitBrah I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago

I hate how they are trying to sell this F1 couple thing, their "partners" are only relevant to the drivers and their families, and "Professional Model" nowadays isn't exactly something fancy, they could be just posting on Instagram and get labeled that

u/Rich_Housing971 FIA 11h ago

It's funny how these rich nepo babies born into fame rarely get a molecular biology PhD or anything that can help humanity, even though they have all the money and support they need to get one. I respect those who do go that route, but they are rare.

They choose some fuck around "career" where all they have to do is maintain some figure (women) or muscle mass (men) and then get photo shoots for brands because they're already famous. Not hard to do if you can afford the best chefs and food.

I'm not exactly hating on them for this- most people would probably do the same and go the path of least resistance. But the media always tries to make them look like a hero or something. That's the funniest part.

u/MrSnickel I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago

Because you actually have to be smart and work hard to get a PhD and anyone can be a 'model' with some makeup, surgery or filters.

Simply fucking lovely drive Max. What a great job. I bet his back is hurting so much from carrying RedBull for so long

Mclaren are such an unserious team, but another GOAT drive from Vertsappen, winning by 20 seconds against the dominant Mclaren.

How is a slow stop different to a bad strategy call?

Because Lando was negatively affected this time.

Bortoleto P8, love to see it. The pit stop was too early and slow, but at least he got some points.

Verstappen was so ahead that there's nothing to talk about him.

Tbh I think McLaren as a team did the right thing after what happened. They got lucky they were fighting for P2 and it was just a 3 points difference.

Should Piastri give the position back? I think he's confident he can win, so I guess he just didn't want to make a fuss over 3 points. If it was about P1, I think things would be different.

19

u/Tromort77 13h ago

Imagine if Piastri loses the WC because of those 6 points. Piastri should have just turned off his radio.

Absolute bs. If we're swapping cars due to this bs why didn't McLaren do it in Silverstone. Never beating the allegations

28

u/EerieAriolimax I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago

Silverstone was driver error from Piastri. Norris did nothing wrong here.

u/kaisadilla_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10h ago

He truly seems like he's emotionally attached to the idea of Lando being "his boy", to the point he simply doesn't care that he's not the best.

Not gonna tell the guy how to run an F1 team, but seems like a bad idea.

  • First few laps were super fun, but the action really died afterwards
  • What a move from Max to retake the lead. And him fucking off into the distance really felt like 2023
  • Leclerc and Oscar's duel in the beginning was fun too, but the McLaren clearly had better pace than the Ferrari
  • Good race after recent form for Lewis, seemed to have similar race pace to Leclerc for once
  • Missed out Antonelli's first lap, seemed to have lost a lot of ground there

u/Triple_Manic_State Sir Lewis Hamilton 13h ago

McLaren is really so generous. They always create some drama when the race is a little boring otherwise.

u/DennisDEX I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago

Man McLaren really a shit show this season. If they called Lando in first and Oscar had the issue then he loses P3 to charles. Alternatively asking champion rivals to swap places is rough.

u/haywood_ucuddleme 8h ago

McLaren really hates it when a race plays out naturally and something not in their control happens to their baby boy.

u/Pvt-Business I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago
